Red Eagle Lake Head campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" within the majestic landscapes of Glacier National Park, Red Eagle Lake Head Campground, located in Waterton Vly, East Glacier Park, MT 59434, USA, offers a unique experience on the eastern side of the park. With contact numbers (406) 888-7800 and +1 406-888-7800, this campground, while requiring reservations, appears to be a worthwhile destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the park's natural beauty, albeit with certain considerations regarding amenities and the environment.
The environment surrounding Red Eagle Lake Head Campground is characterized by its proximity to Red Eagle Lake. One reviewer noted the campsite's close proximity to the lake, which can offer scenic views and potential access for water-related activities, although the water level can fluctuate and may impact water filtering possibilities. The landscape also bears the mark of a past fire, resulting in "little shade" in some areas, a crucial factor to consider, especially during warmer months. Despite this, the area is known for its natural beauty, and wildlife sightings, such as a frequent moose visitor, add to the unique charm of the location. The campground's setting in East Glacier National Park ensures a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery and opportunities for exploring the surrounding wilderness.
The services at Red Eagle Lake Head Campground appear to be somewhat limited, aligning with a more backcountry or less developed camping experience within the national park. One reviewer explicitly mentions "No water, so plan to bring your own," highlighting a critical aspect of preparedness for campers. The presence of "porta-potty toilets" indicates basic sanitation facilities. However, one reviewer found the "pit toilet" to be "very clean," consistent with the general maintenance standards within Glacier National Park. The campground does feature a "food prep area with plenty of seating (and space for bear bags)," which is essential in bear country and provides a designated space for cooking and storing food safely. The availability of well-kept campsites also suggests a level of organization and maintenance within the camping area itself.
Several features make Red Eagle Lake Head Campground a noteworthy option for local campers. Its location on the eastern side of Glacier National Park offers access to a different range of trails and scenic areas compared to the western side. The proximity to Red Eagle Lake, despite potential water level variations, provides a beautiful setting and the chance for lakeside enjoyment. The well-maintained campsites and the dedicated food prep area with bear bag space underscore the park's commitment to visitor safety and comfort within a natural environment. The frequent moose sighting, while emphasizing the need for caution and non-interaction with wildlife, is a unique and memorable aspect of camping here. The access, for some, via a hike through Triple Divide Pass highlights the more adventurous possibilities associated with reaching this campground, although it is also accessible by other means for those with reservations.
Promotional information for Red Eagle Lake Head Campground, aimed at local users seeking "camping near me" within Glacier National Park, would emphasize its location on the less crowded east side of the park, offering a potentially more tranquil experience compared to campgrounds within the park itself. The lakeside setting and opportunities for wildlife viewing, particularly the chance to see moose, would be key attractions. The well-maintained campsites and food prep area would appeal to those seeking a balance between a natural experience and basic comfort and safety. For more adventurous locals, the possibility of hiking in adds to the allure. However, it is crucial to highlight the need to bring all water and be prepared for potential limited shade due to the past fire. The requirement for reservations should also be clearly stated.
Local users considering Red Eagle Lake Head Campground should be aware of the following key points derived from the reviews:
- Reservations are required to camp at this location.
- Campers must bring their own water as there is no water source available at the campground.
- Sanitation is provided through porta-potty toilets (or a pit toilet reported as very clean).
- A food prep area with ample seating and bear bag space is available for safe cooking and food storage.
- Wildlife, including moose, may be present, and visitors must maintain a safe distance and not approach them.
- Shade may be limited in some areas due to a past fire.
- The campground is located close to Red Eagle Lake, with potential for lakeside activities depending on water levels.
- Access to the campground can be via hiking trails, including a route through Triple Divide Pass, suggesting a potentially remote feel even if other access options exist.
- The campsites are reported as well-kept.
In conclusion, Red Eagle Lake Head Campground offers a compelling "camping near me" option for local residents looking to experience the eastern side of Glacier National Park. Its lakeside setting, opportunities for wildlife viewing, and well-maintained campsites are significant draws. However, the necessity of bringing all water and the potential for limited shade are important considerations. The requirement for reservations underscores its popularity and the need for advance planning. For those seeking a more wilderness-oriented camping experience within Glacier National Park, with the chance to see wildlife and enjoy a beautiful lake setting, Red Eagle Lake Head Campground is a worthwhile option, provided they come prepared and have secured a reservation.

Red Eagle Lake Head campground Reviews
I hiked through Triple Divide Pass to get to this camp. The camp does require reservations but is worthwhile to visit. The campsite itself is very close to a lake, which during my visit was very low (and made it difficult to filter water). The sites themselves were well kept, and the food prep area has plenty of seating (and space for bear bags). Additionally, the pit toilet was very clean, like most in Glacier National Park. We did see a moose during breakfast who is apparently a frequent visitor (do not approach!!). Note that there is little shade due to a fire that happened in the past.
Aug 24, 2023 · Koby BirdA great place to camp and enjoy the East side of Glacier National Park. Plenty of sites and they aren't as close to each other as the ones in the Park. No water, so plan to bring your own. Porta-potty toilets. Plenty of shade. We will camp here again!
Aug 12, 2017 · Sarah TaborThis was a great camping spot, the campsites were spread apart from each other so you aren't right on top of the people next to you, the manager was super nice and really laid back, there was trail access to Red Eagle Lake and close proximity to the Two Medicine Glacier national park entrance. The rates were reasonable compared to the campgrounds in Glacier
