Johnson's of St. Mary Introduce
Looking for the perfect camping experience near the majestic Glacier National Park? For local users searching for "camping near me," Johnson's of St. Mary offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourselves in the beauty of Montana's wilderness. Situated conveniently at 21 Red Eagle Rd, Browning, MT 59417, USA, this campground provides access to the eastern side of the park and the stunning Many Glacier area. You can reach them at (406) 732-4207 or their mobile number +1 406-732-4207 to inquire about availability and make reservations.
Based on feedback from fellow travelers, Johnson's of St. Mary presents a mixed but overall promising experience, particularly when considering its prime location and on-site amenities. One reviewer who focused on the restaurant highlighted it as a culinary highlight of their Glacier trip, even though they didn't stay at the campground itself. They raved about the "jammer burger" and the "buffalo soup," describing them as "worth every penny." The "huckleberry lemonade" also left a lasting impression. Furthermore, they appreciated the "great service" from a "sweet and informative" waitress and found the restaurant's decor "very entertaining." This positive dining experience suggests that even if you're not camping, the restaurant at Johnson's of St. Mary could be a worthwhile stop for a local treat after a day of exploring.
For those specifically interested in the campground aspect, one review noted that the terrain is built on a "steep hill." This resulted in a minor inconvenience for them initially with their RV's fold-down stairs, but they were accommodated with a move to a better spot. This is an important point for campers to be aware of, especially those with larger rigs or mobility concerns. It suggests that while the location offers beautiful views, the layout might have some variations in site levelness. The reviewer also mentioned the "pretty view" as a significant plus, reinforcing the scenic advantage of camping in this area.
The same camping reviewer also experienced the on-site restaurant and had a less positive interaction regarding food allergies. They mentioned being told that the restaurant doesn't cater to people with allergies, which was a disappointing experience. However, their dining experience seemed to improve with a "green salad" being preferred over their husband's meal. This indicates that while some dishes might be well-received, those with dietary restrictions might need to exercise caution or inquire thoroughly before ordering.
Combining these insights, Johnson's of St. Mary appears to be a campground with a fantastic location offering picturesque views and convenient access to the east side of Glacier National Park and the Many Glacier area. For local users looking for "camping near me" with proximity to these natural wonders, this could be a strong contender. The presence of an on-site restaurant that at least some visitors have found exceptional adds another layer of convenience, allowing you to enjoy a meal without venturing far from your campsite.
However, potential campers should be mindful of the hilly terrain, which might affect some campsites more than others. It's advisable to inquire about site characteristics when making a reservation, especially if you have specific needs related to your camping setup. While one dining experience was highly positive, another highlighted a potential lack of flexibility regarding food allergies, suggesting that those with dietary restrictions might want to plan accordingly.
In summary, Johnson's of St. Mary offers local campers a chance to be near the stunning landscapes of Glacier National Park. Its features include:
- Convenient location near the east entrance of Glacier National Park and Many Glacier.
- An on-site restaurant with at least some highly-regarded menu items.
- Potentially scenic views from the campground.
Keep in mind the following based on customer feedback:
- The campground is built on a steep hill, which might affect the levelness of some sites.
- Experiences at the restaurant seem to vary, particularly concerning dietary restrictions.

Johnson's of St. Mary Reviews
This review is for the restaurant. I did not stay at the campground. The food was the best that I had during my entire week at glacier national park (we stayed on the west side where there were tons of other restaurants). The service was great, and our waitress was very sweet and informative. I got the jammer burger and buffalo soup. This item is pricey but worth every penny! I could’ve taken down another bowl of that soup for sure. I’ll be dreaming about the huckleberry lemonade until the next time I’m lucky enough to eat here! Also, the decor is very entertaining.
Oct 12, 2024 · Casey F.Stayed in campground. It's built on steep hill. Had problems with dropping stairs low enough to close door. We were able to move to different spot that was better, but just be aware if you have solid fold down step. Ate at restaurant. Mentioned I have tomato allergy asking what was in things. Was told they don't cook for people with allergies. Maybe I should just eat bread. 😵💫very rude. Should have left but husband wanted to try their special. Said my green salad was better than his meal. Plus side- pretty view. Close to park entrances at east side and many glacier
Sep 24, 2024 · carol douglasFavourite place I’ve eaten on our holiday. Firstly, the food is great. Secondly, the place has character and a soul. This is somewhere from our trip we will actually remember. The menus offer stories and an insight into this restaurant which clearly means so much to so many. The food was fast and delicious, the server was polite and attentive. Did we get call hippies? Yep. Did it make us laugh? Also yes. Thank you for the effort you put in to keep places like this with so much personality alive in a world increasingly full of cookie cutter establishment's.
Sep 10, 2024 · Ellie HarrisHuckleberry ice cream & cheesecake 10/10Incredible food. Desserts are incredible! Made me feel like family.Frankie was an excellent server. The atmosphere and service made me feel at home. The food was delicious and the desserts were even better. We couldn’t decide on just 2 so we had 7 total desserts in 2 meals and regret none of them. We will be back next trip!
Jun 30, 2024 · Kyle AllenA nice hike in the wall outside the east glacier gate. All the food was delicious and the prices were reasonable. The staff were very nice and attentive. The owner was also walking around and let us know that the bison in the soup was actually killed by him, which was pretty cool. Make sure you bring your appetite since the sandwiches are huge and the soup is fantastic.
