Great quiet place to stop in , no longer free, now $10 a night per host/caretaker living in the school bus at the entrance. Nice gentlemen and he explained as soon as I parked it was no longer free before I set up. This is a nice campground with spots on the river but it’s showing its age and neglect. Seems to be typical with ACE/Army corps of engineers parks, they build them and maintenance falls by the wayside. Hope the fees will help build this park back because it’s off the beaten path and could be awesome again one day.No noise at night, I was the only one besides the host here. Toilets are non working vaults at this time, due to a flood back in 2019, but host said one side can be used, they pumped it out and waiting on a crew to pressure wash and repaint but that may be a ways in the future. Easy access to get in, big rig friendly, asphalt parking area, some fire rings, older rusted bbq grills, no water at campsites but you can see where there was water spigots scattered around but now they are grown over with small trees. But all in all, a good quiet, peaceful place with a view of the river all day. - Tom

River Ridge Campground Introduce

For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Cecil, Arkansas area, River Ridge Campground, located at 8001-9753 Hoovers Ferry Rd, Cecil, AR 72930, offers a potentially quiet and peaceful stop along the river. It's important to note that recent reviews indicate a change in policy; this campground is no longer free and now charges $10 per night, payable to the host/caretaker who resides in a school bus at the entrance. This information is typically conveyed upon arrival before setting up camp.

The campground is described as having nice spots situated directly on the river, offering scenic views and the soothing sounds of flowing water. This riverside location could be particularly appealing to those seeking a tranquil natural environment for their camping experience. However, several reviewers have pointed out that the campground is showing signs of age and neglect. This observation aligns with a common sentiment regarding Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) parks, where the initial construction is often followed by a decline in maintenance over time. Despite this, the hope is that the newly implemented fees will contribute to the revitalization and upkeep of the park, allowing it to regain its potential as an "awesome" off-the-beaten-path destination.

One of the frequently mentioned positive aspects of River Ridge Campground is its quiet atmosphere, particularly at night. One reviewer even noted being the only camper present besides the host during their stay, emphasizing the potential for a secluded and peaceful experience. The campground is also reported to be "big rig friendly," suggesting that it can accommodate larger recreational vehicles with its asphalt parking areas, making it a convenient stop for a wider range of campers.

However, there are significant concerns regarding the current state of the amenities. Notably, the toilets are described as non-working vault toilets due to a flood that occurred back in 2019. While the host reportedly indicated that one side had been pumped out and was usable, with plans for pressure washing and repainting, the timeline for these improvements remains uncertain and potentially distant. This situation is a critical factor for potential visitors to consider regarding their comfort and hygiene needs.

Another significant limitation is the lack of water at the individual campsites. While evidence of former water spigots scattered around the campground exists, these are now overgrown with small trees, indicating that water hookups are not currently available at the campsites. Campers will need to bring their own water supply for drinking, cooking, and other needs, or determine if there is a central water source still functioning within the campground.

In terms of other features, some fire rings are present at the campsites, allowing for campfires (subject to local regulations and burn bans). Older, rusted BBQ grills are also mentioned, but their condition and usability may vary. Campers planning to cook using these grills should be prepared for potential limitations due to their age and condition.

One reviewer's vivid description of the bathrooms as "Lovecraftian and Eldritch in nature" serves as a strong caution against using them in their current state. This colorful yet concerning feedback highlights a potentially unpleasant and unsanitary condition. The same reviewer also noted a significant presence of mosquitoes ("'Squitos") in early June, particularly in the bathroom area, suggesting that insect repellent would be essential, especially during warmer months.

Despite the challenges with the amenities, the natural environment of River Ridge Campground seems to hold a certain appeal. The river is described as "nice and peaceful," offering a relaxing backdrop for camping. One unique experience mentioned was witnessing a local Ozark resident catching a large catfish from his pickup truck, adding a touch of local flavor to the stay. The presence of friendly dogs investigating the campsite in the morning also contributed to a memorable, "most Arkansas-esque" experience for one visitor, suggesting a laid-back and perhaps slightly unconventional atmosphere.

Given that River Ridge Campground is now charging a nightly fee of $10, local users might expect to see improvements in the facilities over time. However, based on the recent reviews, it appears that the campground is currently in a state of disrepair, particularly regarding the restrooms and the lack of water at campsites. The quiet riverside location and the campground's suitability for big rigs remain positive aspects.

Currently, there is no information available regarding specific promotional offers for River Ridge Campground. The recent implementation of a nightly fee could be considered a change in its operational status, but no further discounts or special rates are mentioned in the provided reviews. Local users interested in camping here should be prepared to pay the $10 nightly fee to the host/caretaker upon arrival.

In conclusion, River Ridge Campground near Cecil, AR, offers a quiet and peaceful riverside camping experience and is noted for being big rig friendly. However, potential local users should be aware of the current $10 nightly fee and the reported state of neglect, particularly the non-working or undesirable condition of the vault toilets and the absence of water at individual campsites. While the natural setting and the potential for improvements with the collected fees are promising, campers should come prepared with their own water and be aware of the limited and potentially unpleasant restroom facilities. The unique local encounters and the tranquil river setting might appeal to those seeking a more rustic and less amenity-driven camping experience. It is advisable to have realistic expectations based on the recent reviews and to be prepared for the current conditions while hoping for future improvements to the park.
