Salinas / Monterey KOA

8710 Prunedale North Rd, Salinas, CA 93907, USA

3.0
The rv sites are extremely small, our awning touches the other site and your neighbors door faces your door. The bathhouse was clean but the showers are very tiny and not wheelchair/ stroller accessible. The women’s only one shower had a working lock. Homeless walk around and it’s connected to a trailer park. The playground is very dirty, I would think they could power wash it. It is next to a very busy road so it’s noisy but very close to a store and McDonald’s. The manager is not very friendly but the works are nice and overall not somewhere we would return. - Casey Marshall

Salinas / Monterey KOA Introduce

For local users in the Salinas and Monterey, California areas (zip code 93907) who are searching for "Camping Near Me," the Salinas / Monterey KOA, located at 8710 Prunedale North Rd, presents itself as an option for RV stays. As part of the KOA (Kampgrounds of America) chain, it might be expected to offer a certain standard of amenities and services. However, the provided customer reviews paint a picture of mixed experiences, highlighting both potential drawbacks and some positives that prospective visitors should carefully consider.

One of the primary concerns raised by a recent visitor pertains to the size of the RV sites. They describe the sites as "extremely small," so much so that their awning touched the adjacent site, and the doors of neighboring RVs faced each other. This lack of space could lead to a feeling of being cramped and lacking privacy, potentially impacting the overall comfort of the stay, especially for those who value personal space and the ability to comfortably utilize their awnings and outdoor areas. This close proximity between sites is a significant factor for RV travelers to be aware of when considering this KOA.

Regarding the facilities, the same reviewer noted that the bathhouse was clean, which is a positive aspect. Cleanliness of communal facilities is often a high priority for campers. However, they also pointed out significant accessibility issues with the showers, describing them as "very tiny" and not wheelchair or stroller accessible. This lack of accessibility could be a major drawback for individuals with mobility challenges or families with young children using strollers. Furthermore, the reviewer mentioned that only one shower in the women’s bathhouse had a working lock, raising potential security and privacy concerns for female guests.

Another concerning observation from this reviewer is the presence of homeless individuals walking around the campground, as well as its connection to a trailer park. These factors might raise safety and security concerns for some visitors, potentially affecting their comfort level and overall experience. It is important for prospective guests to be aware of these observations and consider their own comfort levels regarding these aspects.

The playground at the Salinas / Monterey KOA was described as "very dirty," with the reviewer suggesting that it could benefit from power washing. For families traveling with children, the condition of the playground is often an important factor, and a dirty play area might detract from their enjoyment of the campground.

In terms of location, the KOA is situated next to a "very busy road," which results in noise. While the proximity to a store and McDonald’s might be convenient for quick access to supplies and food, the noise from the busy road could be a significant disturbance, particularly for those seeking a peaceful and quiet camping environment. This trade-off between convenience and noise level is something potential visitors will need to weigh based on their priorities.

The first reviewer also shared their impression of the staff, noting that while the "workers are nice," the manager is "not very friendly." The attitude and helpfulness of the management can significantly impact the overall guest experience, and an unfriendly manager could detract from an otherwise acceptable stay. This negative feedback regarding the manager is a point of concern for customer service.

The second review details an extremely negative customer service experience. A long-time KOA customer, traveling with her ill husband, was refused an additional night's stay because the manager deemed their 1993 fifth wheel to look "too old" and not fitting in with the other RVs in the park. The reviewer explicitly stated that there were no rules against the age of RVs and even confirmed this with the KOA corporate office, which indicated that such rules are not standard but are left to the discretion of individual franchises. This incident highlights a potentially arbitrary and discriminatory practice by the management of this particular KOA.

The reviewer's account describes the staff as "snotty," "Adaline" (likely a misspelling of "appalling" or similar), and rude, suggesting they assumed the reviewer was homeless based on the age of their RV, which was not the case. This experience was described as embarrassing and led the reviewer to vow never to stay at a KOA campground again due to the poor customer service. The fact that the manager did not address the issue directly but had an "embarrassed employee" convey the message about the RV's appearance further underscores the unprofessionalism reported in this review.

Considering these two reviews, the Salinas / Monterey KOA appears to have several significant drawbacks, including small and closely spaced RV sites, accessibility issues with the showers, potential security concerns due to homeless individuals and the connection to a trailer park, a dirty playground, noise from a busy road, an unfriendly manager, and instances of poor and potentially discriminatory customer service related to the age of RVs. On the positive side, the bathhouse is reported to be clean, and the general workers are described as nice. The location offers proximity to a store and McDonald’s, which might be convenient for some.

Given these mixed and largely negative reviews, local users searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Salinas or Monterey area should exercise caution when considering the Salinas / Monterey KOA. While it is part of a well-known chain, the experiences reported by these customers suggest that the quality and management of this particular franchise may not meet the expectations associated with the KOA brand. Potential visitors should weigh the reported issues against any perceived benefits of staying at a KOA, such as familiarity with the brand or potential amenities not mentioned in these reviews (though the reviews are quite detailed about the negatives and mention few positives beyond cleanliness of the bathhouse and nice workers).

Before making a reservation, it would be prudent for prospective guests to seek more recent reviews from other sources to determine if the issues raised have been addressed or if similar experiences are ongoing. Contacting the campground directly to inquire about site sizes, accessibility of facilities, security measures, and their policies regarding RV age might also be beneficial. Ultimately, based on the available information, the Salinas / Monterey KOA appears to have significant shortcomings that could detract from a positive camping experience, and local users may want to explore alternative "Camping Near Me" options in the area.
