Sportsman's Cove Introduce
For local users seeking a peaceful "camping near me" experience nestled in the heart of "old Florida" on the shores of Orange Lake, Sportsman's Cove in McIntosh offers a charming and evolving retreat. Located at 5423 Ave F, this campground provides a tranquil environment with a focus on outdoor activities, particularly for nature enthusiasts and anglers. While it's described as an older campground, ongoing improvements and the natural beauty of its surroundings make it a compelling option for a relaxing getaway.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of Sportsman's Cove is its quiet and peaceful atmosphere. This makes it an ideal destination for local users looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in a serene environment. The owner's commitment to improvement is evident in the ongoing construction of new bathrooms, a laundry room, and an office, which promise to enhance the overall comfort and convenience for guests. This proactive approach to upgrading the facilities suggests a dedication to providing a positive experience for all visitors.
The staff at Sportsman's Cove are described as "friendly," contributing to the welcoming and relaxed ambiance of the campground. For those traveling with pets, the location in the "great little town" of McIntosh offers pleasant opportunities for dog walks. Additionally, the availability of firewood for sale from the camp host adds a convenient touch for campers planning to enjoy campfires. The unique offering of boat and golf cart rentals directly within the campground provides added convenience for exploring the lake and the surrounding area.
While Sportsman's Cove is noted as a "relatively small but clean RV park," it's important for RVers to be aware that the sites are primarily dirt or grass, without concrete pads. The presence of "a few small but old park model units" suggests that cabin-style accommodations might also be available, offering an alternative to RV or tent camping. The campground's prime location directly on Orange Lake is a significant draw, providing easy access to the water for various recreational activities.
The tranquility of Sportsman's Cove is further emphasized by its quiet setting. Its location on the Great American Bird Trail makes it a haven for bird watchers, offering opportunities to observe a diverse array of avian species. Kayaking on Orange Lake is also highlighted as a fantastic way to experience the birdlife and the natural beauty of the lake up close.
For boating enthusiasts, Sportsman's Cove boasts new boat docks, including both open and covered slips. These docks are well-equipped with lighting, water, and electricity, ensuring convenience for boat owners. A thoughtfully designed fish cleaning station is located at one end of the docks, catering directly to anglers. At the opposite end, a custom-built picnic table provides a scenic spot to relax and enjoy the lakeside views.
Access to Orange Lake is facilitated by a boat ramp and a canal leading from the campground to the lake. However, it's important to note that a significant portion of the canal is currently "clogged with hydrilla," an invasive aquatic plant. While the campground has a machine to remove the hydrilla, it has reportedly been out of service for some time. Local users planning to bring boats should inquire about the current condition of the canal. Despite this challenge, the direct lake access remains a major asset of Sportsman's Cove.
For those who prefer paddling, Sportsman's Cove offers kayak rentals for a small fee. A unique and convenient kayak loading ramp has been built, allowing for easy entry and exit from the water, enhancing the kayaking experience for all skill levels.
A recent addition to the campground is a "wonderful viewing platform at the lake's edge." This thoughtfully constructed feature provides an elevated vantage point to appreciate the scenic beauty of Orange Lake and the surrounding environment, perfect for bird watching or simply enjoying the sunset.
The journey to Sportsman's Cove is described as picturesque, with Ave F in McIntosh lined with "beautiful old oak trees" and "a number of old Florida homes along the way," offering a charming introduction to the area and the campground's "old Florida" feel.

Apr 12, 2025 · Kim RickmanRelatively small but clean RV park. All sites are dirt or grass, no concrete pads, and there are a few small but old park model units. Great location on Orange Lake. Very quiet. Situated on the Great American Bird Trail and a great place to kayak out to see a good variety of birds. Boat docks are new, one with open slips and the other with covered slips and have lighting, water and electricity…with a fish cleaning station at one end and a custom built picnic table at the opposite end…very well done. There is a boat ramp with a canal that leads out onto Orange Lake. Unfortunately much of the canal is clogged with hydrilla. They have a machine to remove a lot of it only it has not been working for the past month or so. They also rent kayaks for a small fee and have a unique kayak loading ramp for easy entry and egress from the water. They had just built a wonderful viewing platform at the lake’s edge. To get there you must drive down Ave F in MacIntosh which is lined with beautiful old oak trees with a number of old Florida homes along the way…very quaint and picturesque.
Dec 05, 2024 · James SedgwickLoved staying here. The owner and staff are friendly. The campground is absolutely beautiful. It's pretty rustic, so don't expect 5 star amenities. The beauty of the place and it's surrounding town make up for that though. It's got old Florida fish camp vibes. Stunning views of the lake and sunrises over it. We can't wait to go back!!
Nov 01, 2024 · TravisSportsmans Cove - where old campers, hopes & dreams go to die. Very sketchy campers & owners living there full time for what appears to be many years.Canal is long, shallow and full of grasses/weeds that would make it very difficult to get into orange lake to fish.Owner kept way too much of our two day deposit when we left after first night.
Nov 28, 2024 · Kathleen MyersWe started for a month, and everything was perfect for what we were looking for. The area is so peaceful, and the lake offers so much beauty and tranquility. We kayaked, and my husband fished. If we get back to this area, we will definitely book here again.
