Stony Brook State Park Campground Introduce
For local users in New York and surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Stony Brook State Park Campground, located in Dansville, NY 14437, offers a natural setting with notable features such as a gorge trail, waterfalls, and a natural swimming pool. Its proximity to other popular attractions like Letchworth State Park and Watkins Glen State Park also makes it a potentially convenient base for exploring the Finger Lakes region. However, recent customer reviews present a mixed picture, highlighting both the natural beauty and some potential drawbacks regarding the campground's infrastructure and noise levels.
The environment of Stony Brook State Park Campground is characterized by its picturesque gorge, which features a trail leading past several waterfalls and culminating in a natural swimming pool. This natural feature is a significant draw, offering opportunities for hiking and enjoying the refreshing waters of the gorge. The campground's location in the Finger Lakes region suggests a landscape of rolling hills and woodlands, typical of upstate New York. Its proximity to Letchworth State Park, known as the "Grand Canyon of the East," and Watkins Glen State Park, famous for its stunning gorge trail, further underscores the natural beauty of the surrounding area. The campground is described as being relatively quiet and easy to book, possibly due to its slightly less central location compared to the more renowned nearby parks.
In terms of services and features, one reviewer mentioned the presence of a gorge trail with a natural swimming pool and several waterfalls, indicating opportunities for recreational activities within the park itself. The campsites are described as being larger than those in previous campgrounds visited by one reviewer, with more space between them, and some sites down by the river are noted as being "huge." This suggests that the campground can accommodate a variety of camping setups and offers a degree of privacy between sites. However, a significant concern raised is the limited number of electric sites and the need for newer bathhouses, indicating that the infrastructure might be somewhat dated. Another point of concern is the condition of the roads within the campground, which are described as "terrible" and in need of improvement. Additionally, the campsites themselves are characterized as "very rough and muddy" with no gravel surfaces, which could pose challenges, especially during wet weather.
A major issue highlighted in the reviews is the behavior of some local visitors, particularly on weekends. Complaints include inconsiderate use of generators outside of posted quiet hours, excessive noise from children running through campsites, playing ball and riding scooters in camping areas, bouncing balls on deteriorated paved roads, and noise after midnight, including shining flashlights at other campers. One reviewer expressed the opinion that the campground serves as a weekend getaway for locals who do not adequately supervise their children or respect quiet hours. This suggests a potential for a disruptive and less peaceful camping experience, especially during peak times when local weekend visitors are present.
The proximity to Letchworth State Park and Watkins Glen State Park is a notable feature that could attract visitors interested in exploring these renowned natural attractions. Stony Brook State Park Campground could serve as a more easily bookable and potentially quieter alternative, albeit with the noted infrastructure and noise concerns. The natural swimming pool and gorge trail within Stony Brook State Park itself are also significant features that offer on-site recreational opportunities.
Promotional information is not provided in the reviews. To learn about any special rates, seasonal discounts, or other promotions at Stony Brook State Park Campground, local users would need to contact the New York State Parks system directly or visit their official website. It is also advisable to inquire about the availability of electric sites and the condition of the campsites and roads when making a reservation.
For local users searching for "camping near me" in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Stony Brook State Park Campground offers a location with natural beauty, including a gorge, waterfalls, and a natural swimming pool, and is conveniently situated near other major attractions. The campsites are reported to be spacious, particularly those by the river. However, potential campers should be aware of the reported issues with the condition of the roads and campsites (rough and muddy, lack of gravel) and the limited number of electric sites. Furthermore, the negative experiences with noise from inconsiderate local visitors, especially on weekends, are a significant factor to consider for those seeking a peaceful camping experience.
In conclusion, Stony Brook State Park Campground presents a camping option with appealing natural features and a convenient location for exploring the Finger Lakes. However, the negative reviews regarding the campground's infrastructure (roads, bathhouses, limited electric sites) and the disruptive behavior of some visitors cannot be ignored. Local users interested in this campground should weigh the potential benefits of its natural attractions and location against the reported drawbacks and consider whether the quieter weekdays might offer a more favorable experience. It is recommended to contact the park directly for the most up-to-date information on site availability, conditions, and any relevant regulations regarding noise and visitor behavior.

Stony Brook State Park Campground Reviews
Very quiet and easy to book campground due to its location close to Letchworth state park/Watkins Glen state park. The gorge trail is nice with a natural swimming pool and several waterfalls alone the way. Just wish it had more electric sites and newer bathhouses. The road to the campground could use some improvements.
Jul 10, 2024 · Aaron TangI'm not impressed with this campground. 🙁 It's much larger than the previous campgrounds but the roads are terrible. The sites are very rough and muddy. 😖There's no gravel site surfaces here. The sites are bigger than the previous park and there's more room between them. The camping spots down on the river are huge. But, very inconsiderate locals. 🤬Using their generators outside of the published hours. Kids running all over the place, through your campsites, playing ball,🏀 riding scooters. Bouncing balls on what's left of the paved roads. 😣 Making noise after midnight, shining flashlights 🔦at the campers in the middle of the night. 🙈I suppose that is a weekend getaway for the locals and they just let their kids do whatever.😡 But I wouldn't come back to visit..... Truth is the parents aren't any better behaved 😩
Aug 08, 2024 · Michael ScottSome of the nicest waterfalls and trails on a state park! Awesome camp sites and decent showers, they don't have power but we still managed to get through the weekend and had an amazing time. 45$ for the whole weekend wasn't bad.
Jun 23, 2024 · Billy PayneVery nice well kept campground with access to trails that lead to the State Park. After a rain the brook flows high and the water can be heard rushing past.
Jul 08, 2024 · Emily FellHelpful info on firewood below! We’ve stayed here at the campground a bunch of times now (cabins & tent sites) over the last few years. It’s a good-to for our family! Well maintained grounds, cabins are new and in excellent condition. No electricity heat or lights in the cabin, so plan accordingly. Each has 1 double bed and 2 twin beds. You cannot buy firewood within the campground itself. There is some for sale just outside the entrance at one of the homes right there, but the pieces are small and overpriced imho. Go north on 36 about 1.5 miles (past the main entrance trance to the park itself) until you get to K’s Canine & Tri-County Family Medicine. Directly across from them is consistently good firewood for sale. See pictures! And if you forgot cash you can VENMO them! 👏🏼
