Environment: Immerse Yourself in Riverside Beauty
One of the most frequently praised aspects of Tollgate Campground is its stunning natural setting. The campground boasts direct access to a beautiful river, creating a soothing ambiance with the gentle sounds of flowing water. Imagine waking up to the tranquil murmur of the river or spending a relaxing evening by its banks. This riverside location offers more than just scenic views; it provides opportunities for various water-related activities, although specific activities are not detailed in the provided information. The lush surroundings of Rhododendron, Oregon, known for its natural beauty and proximity to the Mt. Hood National Forest, further enhance the appeal of Tollgate Campground. While one reviewer noted that Site #5 pull-through could be a little tight and uneven for a larger travel trailer, the overall experience of being so close to the river seems to outweigh this minor inconvenience for many visitors.
The positive feedback regarding the absence of highway noise is a significant advantage. Located away from the hustle and bustle of Highway 26, Tollgate Campground offers a peaceful retreat where you can truly immerse yourself in the sounds of nature. This tranquility is a significant draw for those seeking a respite from the everyday noise of urban or even suburban life. The "magical" and "beautiful" descriptions from a visitor who arrived during a rain shower further emphasize the enchanting quality of the environment, suggesting that even in less-than-ideal weather, the natural charm of the campground shines through.
Services and Amenities: Cleanliness and Hospitality

Furthermore, the positive remarks about the "very nice camp hosts" and the "super friendly" person "watching over the space" underscore the importance of hospitality. Friendly and helpful camp hosts can greatly enhance a camping trip by providing assistance, information, and a welcoming atmosphere. The positive interaction shared by one reviewer highlights the human element that can make a campground feel more inviting and secure.
Features and Activities: A Basecamp for Exploration
The reviews mention hiking as an activity undertaken by at least one visitor before deciding to camp at Tollgate. This suggests that the campground is likely situated in an area that offers access to hiking trails and other outdoor recreational opportunities. Given its location near Rhododendron and the Mt. Hood National Forest, it's reasonable to infer that visitors can explore scenic trails, enjoy nature walks, and potentially engage in other activities such as fishing (given the river access), wildlife viewing, and perhaps even mountain biking in the surrounding areas. While the campground itself may not offer a long list of specific features within its boundaries, its strategic location serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of the region.
The "Day Use Area" designation in the campground's name also suggests that the location caters not only to overnight campers but also to individuals and families looking for a place to spend a day enjoying the outdoors. This could include picnicking, relaxing by the river, and potentially accessing nearby trails without necessarily staying overnight. Tollgate Campground/Day Use Area Reviews
Site #5 pull through is a little tight and uneven for a 16ft travel trailer however we made it work. Absolutely loved being on the river. You really can't hear Hwy 26 which is the big bonus. Super clean pit toilets and very nice camp hosts. We'll be back.
May 25, 2022 · Adam WilliamsOMG THIS PLACE IS MAGICAL. Went hiking and wanted to camp afterwards. We tried multiple camp sites everything was full but this was the last place on the list before heading back home and they had room. The guy that was watching over the space was super friendly and we shared a cute convo. It started to rain but all I can say it was magical and beautiful. Would definitely go back.
Jan 20, 2022 · Confessions of a Food FreakReally peaceful and small campground right next to the river. It is also right next to HWY 26 and does get loud at night when trucks are driving by. If you are a light sleeper, try getting a site next to the river so the sound of water can drown out the trucks. It is close to anything you may need and the bathrooms were cleaner than expected. Will be back again!
Aug 17, 2020 · Cherice PWe were in site 8. It had a lower portion very close to the river that fit a 10x12 tent nicely. River very loud but nice. Cannot hear car traffic. Top part of site is big. We has another tent up there and 2 tables in addition to the picnic table.Even up there river blocks noise. Had an extremely good time.
Jul 13, 2024 · Debra GleesonFriendly camp host, clean and well maintained grounds, the river sound masks the highway noise for the most part, but no internet connection from my site, #4, using Verizon. I walked the loop and found one bar of service in the higher numbered sites, and two bars at the entrance to the campground. Still very pleasant and I'd stay again for the convenience of the location.
