Whitewater Lake Campground Introduce
Are you searching for the perfect camping escape right here in Wisconsin? Look no further than Whitewater Lake Campground, nestled at N8095 Hi Lo Rd, Whitewater, WI 53190, USA. Located conveniently for local adventurers seeking "camping near me," Whitewater Lake Campground offers a unique outdoor experience. You can reach them at (262) 473-7501 or their mobile number, +1 262-473-7501.
Based on feedback from fellow campers, Whitewater Lake Campground presents a mixed bag of experiences, and it's crucial for local users to be well-informed before planning their visit. The campground boasts spacious campsites, providing a comfortable setting amidst nature. One of its key attractions is the pristine Whitewater Lake, where you have the opportunity to rent kayaks directly on-site, promising enjoyable days on the water. The area also offers access to the renowned Ice Age Trail, with one connecting trail easily accessible from the campground. While one reviewer noted that this particular trail was demanding, it rewarded hikers with beautiful views and excellent photo opportunities along its approximately 5-mile stretch.
However, it's essential to be aware of certain limitations and potential inconveniences. Several reviews highlight significant issues with the campground's amenities. Notably, there are no showers or flush toilets available within the campground itself. The nearest shower facilities are reportedly around 12 miles away, which translates to a considerable 25-minute drive each way on country roads. Furthermore, one camper described the provided water at the distant shower location as lukewarm and having a strong sulfur odor, originating from what they identified as a "horse rider campground." This may be a significant consideration for those prioritizing hygiene during their camping trip.
The on-site pit toilets also received negative feedback, with mentions of unpleasant smells and a significant presence of flies and mosquitoes. This is an important factor to consider, especially during warmer months.
Another area of concern raised by visitors is the apparent lack of enforcement regarding campground rules, particularly concerning noise levels. Some campers reported that other visitors did not respect quiet hours, and there was no visible intervention from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to address these issues. Additionally, instances of people driving the wrong way on one-way roads within the campground were noted, potentially posing safety hazards.
Wildlife sightings within the campground seem to be minimal, which might be a disappointment for those hoping for close encounters with nature. Moreover, the signage and maps within the campground have been described as confusing, making it difficult to locate specific campsites and reference nearby trails. The directions provided on the confirmation letters were also criticized for leading campers to the DNR headquarters rather than directly to their reserved campsite, resulting in wasted travel time, especially after dark.
It's worth noting that the DNR website's promotional photos were mentioned as potentially misleading, with one reviewer pointing out an image of a mountainside that is not representative of the southern Wisconsin landscape where the campground is located. Therefore, local users are advised to manage their expectations based on this feedback.
On a more positive note, for those needing supplies, a BP gas station is conveniently located about 10 minutes away, and a Walmart is approximately a 20-25 minute drive from the campground. This provides relatively easy access to essential items and groceries.
Regarding the local environment, one reviewer mentioned unpredictable weather patterns, with unexpected rainfall despite a low forecast. Additionally, while cellular reception with Verizon LTE was reported to show three bars, the actual internet connection quality did not seem to align with this signal strength.
Considering all these points, Whitewater Lake Campground offers a mixed experience. While it boasts roomy campsites and access to a clean lake with kayak rentals, as well as proximity to a section of the Ice Age Trail, potential visitors should carefully weigh the reported issues with amenities, rule enforcement, signage, and directions. For local campers seeking alternatives, Governor Dodge State Park was specifically mentioned as a potentially "much better experience overall" and is located within a reasonable distance.
Finally, local users should be aware of strict speed limit enforcement in the area, with reports of frequent police presence issuing tickets for speeds as low as 15 mph. Additionally, railroad crossings in the vicinity are marked only with stop signs, so extra caution is advised.
In conclusion, Whitewater Lake Campground provides a lakeside camping option with some appealing features like spacious sites and kayak rentals. However, potential visitors should be fully aware of the reported limitations regarding showers, toilets, noise control, signage, and directions to make an informed decision about their "camping near me" experience.

Whitewater Lake Campground Reviews
Photos are of campsite and nearest hiking trail (ice age trail). The maps are very confusing as to location your campsite and then referencing the nearest trails. (whitewater for reference). No showers or flush stalls on site which we knew of. However the nearest showers are 12 miles away or so, which through country roads translates to 25min drive one way.To top that off, the water was lukewarm at best and absolutely reeked of sulfur (horse rider campground) not about to drive an hour to another camp site.Pit toilets smelled pretty bad and laden with flies and mosquitoes.People here don't really respect the rules regarding noise. Nor does dnr enforce them. Lot of people driving down the wrong way down one ways.Very little wildlife to be seen?Nearest trail was marked very poorly (only one that connects this camping area). With no mileage or good maps close together. Ironically enough the trail was very demanding but with beautiful views and great photo ops. (went about 5 miles up on ice age trail).DNR website very misleading with photos too. It showed a mountain side which isn't even in the southern section lol. What really bothered us is the directions they give you on the confirmation letter are to reach the headquarters and not your camp site. (Why the heck would anyone want to go there? Took us away from our site with another 25 min wasted driving after it already got dark....)There is a BP where you can get some supplies about 10 min away, and a Walmart about 20-25 min away.Weather for this location is very poor. 0% chance of rain and it pours randomly. Cellular reception is 3 bars on Verizon LTE but connection doesn't reflect that. Not a terrible camp by any means, but most definitely take everything into consideration before you come here. Governor dodge state park isn't far away, and it is a much better experience overall. Also be wary of the posted speed limits. Lots of cops in the area, waiting to increase their revenue with speeds as low as 15mph, and no RR crossing gates only stop signs.
Sep 06, 2021 · TenshiiNice campground with roomy sites. Lake was clean and you could rent kayaks on site.
Aug 30, 2024 · Erica PhillipsRecommend site 757, nice open area, wind breeze.Restrooms, pit (in and out:) ) but fairly clean. No showers, the only downside. Definitely hike Ice Age Trail.
May 30, 2023 · Robert PrzybylowskiNice quite campground. All the site are spread out witth plenty of room around them. Stayed in site 771 which is a walk in. The walk was farther back then expected (Over 1/4 mile) but we'll worth it.
Jun 28, 2017 · Al EllisandeMy reserved campsite was occupied when I arrived. No one would really help. Camp host isn't a cop(they failed to post the reservation on the site post), the ranger didn't want to confront the trespassers and the game warden had nothing to do with this but all fingers were pointed to them? This lack of assistance knocked a star off.The sites here were on the muddy side, they need some attention. The sites are nicely spaced with vegetation between them giving you a nice sense of privacy. The pit toilet seats are about 10" off the ground so you'll really be squatting. :-)There is very little signage about needing a daily permit as well as the campsite fees and the host offered no recommendations on where to get one, so I didn't.
