Sterling State Park Campgrounds, located at 511 N Lakeshore Dr, Monroe, MI 48162, USA, offers a unique camping environment directly on the shores of Lake Erie. You can reach the campgrounds at (734) 289-2715 or +1 734-289-2715 for reservations and inquiries.
According to visitor feedback, William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds is a "full service campground," providing essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Many sites offer "full hook up," which includes water, electricity, and sewer connections, a significant convenience for RV travelers. While one reviewer noted that the campground itself "has barely any trees" and might not feel as "naturey" as some other state parks due to its proximity to the city and visible smokestacks, others found the environment perfectly acceptable, with one mentioning that "the trees are all on the small/young side, but for me that's no big deal." The consensus suggests that while the landscape might be less heavily wooded than some expect from a state park, it still offers a functional and enjoyable camping experience, particularly for those prioritizing lakeside access and amenities.
One of the most significant advantages of William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds is its immediate adjacency to the beach and a playground. One enthusiastic camper gave this a "big 👍🏼," highlighting its appeal for families with children. The convenience of having these recreational facilities within easy walking distance of the campsites adds considerable value, allowing for spontaneous beach outings and playtime for younger visitors. The direct access to the shores of Lake Erie also provides opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the lake breeze, which one reviewer noted was "decent" during their stay.
For those interested in fishing, William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds appears to be a favorable location. One visitor used it as a "base camp while fishing the Detroit River for 3 days" and also reported catching "a lot of fish in the backwaters around the campground." This suggests that the park's location offers access to diverse fishing opportunities, both in the nearby Detroit River and in the local waterways surrounding the campground itself. This could be a major draw for anglers looking for a convenient place to stay while pursuing their hobby.
Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate the presence of "a lot of nice nature trails" within the state park. These trails offer opportunities for hiking, walking, and exploring the local flora and fauna. While the campground itself might lack mature trees, the presence of these trails suggests that there are still avenues for engaging with the natural environment within the broader park area.
In terms of amenities within the campground, reviewers mentioned the presence of "several vending machines" and "a couple of food trailers." These on-site options provide some convenience for snacks and meals, although one camper expressed a desire for "a store within walking distance (similar to Aloha State Park)." It is important to note that firewood is not sold on-site, and one visitor mentioned that there are "not many places that sell it nearby," so campers planning to have campfires should plan accordingly and potentially bring their own firewood or research local vendors before arriving.
Despite some reservations about the lack of mature trees and the proximity to urban influences, at least one visitor ranked William C. Sterling State Park Campground as their "favorite" among five Michigan state parks visited in 2023, stating their intention to return in 2024. This strong positive endorsement suggests that the park's strengths, such as its lakeside location, full hookup sites, and access to beach and playground, outweigh its perceived shortcomings for many campers.
Considering the "camping near me" platform category, William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds offers a compelling option for local users seeking a lakeside camping experience with convenient amenities. Its full hookup sites cater well to RV travelers, while the adjacent beach and playground make it particularly attractive for families. The fishing opportunities in the Detroit River and the backwaters, along with the presence of nature trails, provide additional recreational value. While the lack of a heavily wooded environment and the absence of on-site firewood sales are points to consider, the overall positive experiences of many visitors highlight the park's appeal.
As for promotional information, the provided data does not include any specific current promotions or discounts. However, the fact that a repeat visitor considered it their favorite among several Michigan state parks speaks volumes about the positive experiences it offers. Local users interested in camping at William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds are encouraged to contact them directly at (734) 289-2715 or +1 734-289-2715 to inquire about seasonal rates, availability, and any potential special offers or events. In conclusion, William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds provides a unique "camping near me" opportunity in the Monroe, Michigan area, primarily distinguished by its direct access to Lake Erie, full-service campsites, and family-friendly amenities like the beach and playground. William C. Sterling State Park Campgrounds Reviews
This is a full service campground. It worked well for a base camp while fishing the Detroit River for 3 days. It has a lot of nice nature trails, but the campground is quite lame and has barely any trees. However, the sites on Lake Erie are nice. We also caught a lot of fish in the backwaters around the campground. They do not sell firewood on site, and there are not many places that sell it nearby. As far as State Parks go, this one just doesn't feel very "naturey" being so close to the city with visible smoke stacks.
Apr 26, 2025 · Mike BurgardtThe campground is adjacent to the beach and playground, which is a big 👍🏼 for us.The trees are all on the small/young side, but for me that's no big deal. This campground is right on the shores of lake Erie, so at least while we were there, it provided a decent breeze. The campsite are fairly spacious. We had a full hook up site, so I can't say anything about the public bathrooms as we did not use them. There are several vending machines here and a couple of food trailers. I do wish, however, that there was a store within walking distance (similar to Aloha State Park). We went to five Michigan state parks in 2023. William C. Sterling State Park Campground was my favorite and we will be back 2024.
Jan 13, 2024 · John Meyers III (Trey)They sure could use some bushes between the sites. And the fire ring was in a weird place. Those are my only complaints. The beach is beautiful and clean. The campground is well maintained. The facilities are awesome. The prices are great. Lots of places for the kids to play. Plenty of walking trails. So many people fishing every day.We will be back!
Aug 13, 2024 · PeteBeautiful spot to watch the sun rise. Plus, they accept pets. Many stores within a 10 min ride for all those last-minute items that were forgotten. The water can be a little rough, so mind the littles. Our family will be making another visit.
Sep 30, 2023 · Sarah WrightThe camp site was very clean and fortunately our spot was just near the beach. It was fun to spend time on not so crowded beach. We also took a little risk by walking till the edge that is created with stones. Make sure you wear shoes while walking to the edge. It's a beautiful spot for photographers. You can rent a kayak here for $20 for 4 hours. Make sure you take your bugs spray or remain aware as we found a tick.
