Immerse Yourself in Nature: Environment and Location
Blackfoot Canyon Campground is situated in a location that offers a distinct deep woods feel, allowing campers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Montana's forests. The proximity to the Blackfoot River is a significant draw, providing outstanding access for various river-related activities. However, it's important to note that the campground's location near state highway 200 means that some traffic noise may be noticeable, potentially affecting the otherwise serene atmosphere. Additionally, visitors should be aware that mosquitoes can be quite prevalent during the summer months, requiring appropriate preparation.
Basic Forest Service Amenities: Embracing Rustic Camping
As a Forest Service campground, Blackfoot Canyon offers basic amenities, aligning with a more rustic camping experience. Based on available information, the campground includes pit toilets as its restroom facility. Further details regarding other amenities such as drinking water, picnic tables, or fire rings are not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. Campers should anticipate a more primitive camping environment and come prepared with all necessary supplies and equipment for a self-sufficient stay. This type of campground is ideal for those who prioritize natural surroundings and river access over extensive facilities.
Outstanding Access to the Blackfoot River: A Key Feature
A major advantage of Blackfoot Canyon Campground is its exceptional access to the Blackfoot River. This renowned river offers opportunities for various activities such as fishing, wading, and simply enjoying the scenic beauty of the flowing water. For anglers and river enthusiasts, this direct access is a significant benefit, making the campground a desirable location for those looking to engage with the Blackfoot River's natural resources. However, the reviews indicate that only a few campsites are located directly on the river, so early arrival or specific site selection may be necessary to secure a riverside spot.
Potential for Noise and Mosquitoes: Important Considerations
Prospective campers should be aware of two potential drawbacks mentioned in the reviews. The proximity to state highway 200 can result in traffic noise that may detract from the otherwise tranquil deep woods setting. Additionally, mosquitoes are reported to be quite bad during the summer months. Therefore, it is advisable for visitors to come prepared with insect repellent and take necessary precautions to mitigate the nuisance of mosquitoes, especially during warmer times of the year.
Limited Riverside Sites: Plan Accordingly
The reviews indicate that only a limited number of campsites at Blackfoot Canyon Campground are situated directly on the river. This is an important consideration for campers specifically hoping for a riverside location. These prime spots may be in high demand, so planning and early arrival could be beneficial to secure one of these sites. For those who don't secure a riverside spot, the general access to the Blackfoot River remains a significant advantage of the campground.

Blackfoot Canyon Campground Reviews
This is a basic Forest Service campground with a deep woods feel to it that is partially spoiled by the traffic noise from the nearby state highway 200. Access to the Blackfoot River is outstanding, but the mosquitoes can be quite bad in summer.
Jul 15, 2023 · I.S. BatchmannNice campground. Only few sites on River. Not much hear just pit toliet
Dec 08, 2018 · brandon pittmanIt's an awesome spot that is free but not as highly maintained as pay camping. That being said there's a lot to do if you want fun, fishing, fat meat, swimming, sight seeing, hanging way out, semi private activity, and whatever you want. There's a decent vault toilet. The sites are smaller and only a few large enough for RV and trailer combination approaching 60 feet. This area has no cell service.
Oct 10, 2021 · Greg “FlyBoy”Wow! Talk about camping in the wilderness! Just had a great time here, and you couldn't find a better spot to give you the feeling that you truly are in Montana. I'm sure there are plenty of great "Montana" campgrounds, but this has to be right next to the best. The Blackfoot River slowly drifts by and it's possible to walk alongside it. The cool breeze off the river made the nights feel so cozy. It's not a fancy, modernized campsite, but is that really what you want out in the wild mountain country of Montana? Can't wait to come back!
Jul 25, 2020 · John IversonGreat camp spots with picnic tables and fire pit. There are spots right on the river, but you have to have a tent or small camper. We have a 30ft and found a spot with plenty of space for us and our friends 27ft camper.
