Brushy Lake Recreation Area

Danville, AL 35619, USA

4.0
We like Brushy. It’s quiet and peaceful but the past two times we’ve came, the bathroom sinks are out of order so that’s why only 4 stars. We hiked the trail a couple months ago and then came back to camp. No one wants to go to the bathroom and not be able to wash their hands so please get that fixed, other than that, great little recreation area. Primitive camping is nice with grill fire pits and picnic table at each spot. watch out for snakes, we saw a big water moccasin around the fishing dock. There is no public water access and no showers. So bring lots of water and wet wipes or your own shower setup. Bathrooms on tent side are just like an outhouse situation with no sinks. Bathrooms on trail side have flushing toilets and are supposed to have sinks with running water but as stated, they’ve been out of order for a while. - Kayla Landers

Brushy Lake Recreation Area Introduce

For local users in the Danville, Alabama area seeking a tranquil and budget-friendly primitive camping experience near you, Brushy Lake Recreation Area, located in Danville, AL 35619, USA, offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Situated just inside the renowned Bankhead National Forest, this recreation area, while providing basic amenities, emphasizes a more rustic and self-sufficient camping style. Falling under the "camping near me" category for those who appreciate a quieter, less developed outdoor experience, Brushy Lake presents a peaceful retreat for tent campers and nature enthusiasts.

The environment of Brushy Lake Recreation Area is consistently described as "quiet and peaceful" and "beautiful." Nestled within the Bankhead National Forest, campers can expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of Alabama's woodlands, characterized by diverse flora and fauna. The location along a watershed suggests the presence of water features, although public water access for consumption is noted to be unavailable. One reviewer mentioned a fishing dock, indicating that there might be opportunities for fishing, although caution is advised regarding wildlife, as a large water moccasin was observed in that area. The sounds of nature are highlighted as being very peaceful, contributing to a relaxing and immersive outdoor experience. The small size of the campground, with one reviewer noting only having one neighbor about four sites down, suggests a sense of seclusion and privacy.

The services at Brushy Lake Recreation Area are decidedly primitive, catering to those who are prepared for a more self-sufficient camping trip. Notably, there are no showers available, and public water access for drinking or other needs is absent. Campers are strongly advised to bring an ample supply of their own water and to consider alternatives like wet wipes or personal shower setups for hygiene. Bathroom facilities are present but vary depending on the area of the campground. On the tent side, the bathrooms are described as being "just like an outhouse situation with no sinks." On the trail side, there are flushing toilets, and sinks are supposed to be available, but multiple reviews indicate that the sinks have been out of order for an extended period. This lack of functional handwashing facilities in the trail-side bathrooms is a significant concern raised by visitors.

Despite the limited services, Brushy Lake Recreation Area does offer some basic features to enhance the primitive camping experience. Each campsite is equipped with a grill, a fire pit, and a picnic table, providing essential infrastructure for cooking, campfires, and outdoor dining. One review also mentioned designated tent pads at each site, which can help in setting up tents on uneven terrain. The availability of a hiking trail is also noted, offering opportunities for exploration and enjoying the natural surroundings of Bankhead National Forest. The campground is also mentioned as being located along a watershed, which, while not providing public water access, contributes to the natural environment and potentially attracts certain types of wildlife, including insects, as one reviewer cautioned to "plan for bugs."

A significant feature of Brushy Lake Recreation Area is its affordability, with one reviewer mentioning a very low camping fee of only $5 per night. This makes it an exceptionally budget-friendly option for those seeking a natural camping experience without the cost associated with more developed campgrounds. The fact that it is located just inside Bankhead National Forest also provides access to the broader recreational opportunities within the forest, such as additional hiking trails, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing areas.

However, potential visitors should be well aware of the limitations in services. The absence of public water and showers necessitates careful planning and packing. The unreliable or non-functional sinks in the bathrooms, particularly on the trail side, are a significant drawback that campers need to be prepared for. The "outhouse situation" on the tent side further emphasizes the primitive nature of the facilities. The presence of wildlife, such as the observed water moccasin, also requires campers to be vigilant and take appropriate safety precautions.

Given its nature as a basic recreation area within a national forest, it is unlikely that Brushy Lake Recreation Area offers any specific promotional information or discounts beyond its already very low camping fee. The primary draw is the natural environment, the quiet atmosphere, and the budget-friendly access to primitive camping and hiking within Bankhead National Forest.

In conclusion, Brushy Lake Recreation Area offers a quiet and peaceful primitive camping experience near Danville, Alabama, within the beautiful Bankhead National Forest. It provides basic amenities such as fire pits, grills, and picnic tables at each campsite, along with access to hiking trails and potential fishing opportunities (with caution regarding wildlife). Its very low camping fee makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers. However, potential visitors must be prepared for the limited services, including the absence of public water and showers, and the unreliable or primitive bathroom facilities. Bringing ample water and personal hygiene supplies is essential. For those seeking a simple and natural camping getaway without the need for modern amenities, Brushy Lake Recreation Area could be a suitable choice, provided they are well-prepared for the primitive conditions.
