Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking "camping near me" in a beautiful location with convenient access to the Indiana Dunes National Park, the aptly named "Campground," situated at Electric Campground, 1600 N 25 E, Chesterton, IN 46304, USA, offers a promising option. While the name itself is generic, the reviews provide valuable insights into the environment, services, and features of this camping facility, making it relevant for those looking for a local outdoor getaway.
The environment surrounding Campground benefits significantly from its proximity to the Indiana Dunes National Park. This national treasure boasts diverse ecosystems, including towering sand dunes, lush forests, and scenic Lake Michigan shoreline. Campers at Campground can expect to be within easy reach of this natural beauty, offering opportunities for hiking, beachcombing, swimming, and exploring the unique landscapes of the Indiana Dunes. One reviewer specifically mentioned that the campground is close to Indiana Dunes, with trails of approximately 0.5 to 0.6 miles leading directly to the beach area. This immediate access to the national park's trails and beaches is a significant environmental advantage for those choosing to stay at Campground.
In terms of services, Campground appears to prioritize the comfort and convenience of its guests. One reviewer who stayed at site 26e noted that their chosen site was "very nice," offering tree cover behind and ample space from neighboring sites. This suggests that at least some sites within the campground provide a sense of privacy and a pleasant natural setting. Furthermore, the reviewer highlighted that their site was level, making the process of parking a 30-foot trailer, setting up camp, and hooking up the electric easy. The mention of "Electric Campground" in the address also confirms the availability of electric hookups, a crucial service for RV campers looking for "camping near me" with power access.
The facilities at Campground are also well-regarded by visitors. The reviewer specifically mentioned that the facilities were "really well-maintained," and the bathrooms were "very clean." Additionally, the showers were also noted as being well-maintained. Clean and functional restrooms and showers are essential for a comfortable camping experience, and the positive feedback in this regard suggests that Campground prioritizes hygiene and upkeep.
A significant feature of Campground is its direct access to the Indiana Dunes National Park via nearby trails. The short trails leading to the beach area provide an excellent opportunity for campers to easily enjoy the shores of Lake Michigan without the need for extensive travel. This proximity to the beach is a major draw for those looking for "camping near me" that combines the traditional camping experience with beach access for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the lake views.
However, one critical point of concern raised by a reviewer is the traffic congestion when re-entering the park. According to the review, there is often a long wait to get back into the campground due to a lack of a separate lane for campers. This resulted in wait times of over 30 minutes even for short trips outside the campground, such as getting coffee. The reviewer strongly urged that this issue be addressed as soon as possible, as it significantly detracts from the overall experience. While this is not directly related to the campground's internal environment or services, it is an important factor for local users to consider, especially if they anticipate leaving and re-entering the campground frequently.
Despite this access issue, the positive aspects of Campground, such as the level sites with electric hookups, the clean and well-maintained facilities, and the close proximity to the Indiana Dunes trails and beaches, make it a noteworthy option for those searching for "camping near me" in the Chesterton area. The combination of a pleasant camping environment and easy access to a renowned natural attraction is a significant advantage.

Campground Reviews
Site 26eWe chose a site that was very nice behind us was tree cover and we weren’t too close to other sites. The site itself was level which made parking, setting up, and hooking up the electric easy. Parking our 30 foot trailer was no problem however we did notice that there were other sites where pulling in and out might’ve been more challenging. The facilities were really well-maintained. The bathrooms were very clean. The showers were also well-maintained. The campground is close to Indiana dunes with .5-.6 mile trails leading to the beach area.
Jun 14, 2024 · M&M P.Beautiful location. However, having to wait a LONG time to get back into the park behind the line (because campers done have their own lane) is CRAZY.This needs changed ASAP.Shouldn’t have to wait 30+ minutes when you go out to grab a coffee or whatever outside the campground.
Apr 27, 2025 · steven parrettStayed at the Indiana Dunes State Campground on an RV trip over the Thanksgiving holiday week. We arrived late at night, so it wasn’t much to take pictures. Woke up bright and early the next day and snapped the attached photo. The park itself was rustic, clean/quiet and comfortable. The restrooms were limited, which also included the ice bath showers. The campground took care of our needs, and we appreciate it. If you happen to be in the area, please check them out.
Dec 19, 2024 · John Smith IIISite 26. This was a 1 night stay, the week of July 4th. Level and fit our 26ft Motorhome and tow on the side with plenty of room. Close to bathrooms, camp store and trail to beach and Nature Center. We did not get a chance to go to the Nature Center. The trail to the beach was 0.5 mile long, beautiful, and easily walked. The beach was gorgeous, with a Cafe, Ice cream shop, bar on the rooftop(check hrs of operation), and bathrooms- you can also drive here. There are no lights on the trail, so if you go for sunset, it will be dark for the return walk. Great playground close by. The camp store was good, we got fire wood and stuff for Smore's. However, the bathrooms had to be the worst bathrooms I have ever seen, both at the campground and the beach. I understand that they are a bit older, but do not understand how filthy they were, how disgusting people can be and to think someone had to clean up this mess(which was not cleaned). There was vomit and poop all over the stalls, dirty diapers on benches in the changing area and the trash everywhere was over filled and on the ground. I am thankful that I have my own private bathroom, but there were many tent campers who did not.Note, that if you are camping and staying at the Indiana Dunes State Campground, you have free access to the 3 Dunes Challenge which is right there. However, if you want to the Diana of the Dunes Trail, you have to drive to Indian Dunes National Park, about 20 minutes away, and it is not free, you must pay an entrance fee. I can not recall the exact amount, but it was around $25. There is also a beach and other trails.Overall, this was a gorgeous stop and I would recommend it. We would have liked to stay for 2-3 nights, but not only did we not have time, but this was a last minute booking. Go if you can.
Jul 11, 2024 · Rachel PageCamp ground is nice some sites are a little close to each other. Site 91 is a good site. Bathrooms could use an upgrade and a good cleaning. Beach is about .5 mile easy walk beach trail
