Cherokee Camp Introduce
For local residents and those seeking a quintessential Michigan vacation experience, if you're searching for "camping near me" with a rustic touch and stunning waterfront location, look no further than Cherokee Camp. Situated at 14703 S Scenic Dr, Barbeau, MI 49710, USA, and reachable at (906) 647-9143 or +1 906-647-9143, this campground has been a cherished destination for families for over half a century. The glowing testimonials from repeat visitors highlight its exceptional location, welcoming owner, and unbeatable value for a memorable getaway.
The environment surrounding Cherokee Camp is truly special, nestled right along the picturesque St. Mary's River. This prime waterfront location offers breathtaking views, abundant wildlife, and endless opportunities for adventure. Imagine waking up to the gentle sounds of the river and stepping outside to stunning natural beauty right at your doorstep. The long-standing tradition of families returning year after year speaks volumes about the captivating environment and the sense of peace and tranquility it offers. Located in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula, Cherokee Camp provides an authentic experience of what the state's natural beauty truly encompasses.
Cherokee Camp offers a unique style of accommodation through its "cutest rustic cabins." These cabins provide a cozy and comfortable base for your vacation, allowing you to immerse yourself in the natural surroundings without sacrificing essential amenities. According to a long-time visitor, you only need to bring your clothes and toiletries, as the cabins are well-equipped with electricity, water, bathrooms, a stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, and all necessary dishes, pots, and pans. This "home away from home" setup simplifies your packing and allows you to focus on enjoying your vacation. Laundry facilities are also available (it's recommended to inquire for details upon booking).
A significant feature of Cherokee Camp is its excellent access to the St. Mary's River. Guests are welcome to bring their boats, with parking available for vehicles and boat trailers. While the boat launch is located a short distance down the road, docks are conveniently situated right in front of the cabins, making it incredibly easy to enjoy boating, fishing, and exploring the waterway. For those interested in a leisurely cruise, there's even an option to rent a pontoon boat (inquire about availability when calling). The proximity to the St. Mary's River opens up a world of aquatic adventures right outside your cabin door.
Cherokee Camp caters to both large and small groups, making it an ideal destination for family reunions or intimate getaways. The owner takes care to place groups in appropriately sized cabins, and it's important to inform him of the total number of guests during booking. Some cabins feature bunk beds that are surprisingly spacious, comfortably accommodating two adults in each. This thoughtful arrangement ensures that everyone has a comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring.
While the Wi-Fi is described as "kindly iffy," the overwhelming sentiment is that the surrounding natural beauty and the abundance of activities make it a minor concern. As one reviewer aptly put it, "Who cares?" The focus at Cherokee Camp is on embracing the outdoors and creating lasting memories with loved ones. For those who need to stay connected, the availability of Wi-Fi is a bonus, but the real draw is the opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature and family.
The location of Cherokee Camp is another major highlight. Situated in Barbeau, it offers a perfect balance of seclusion without being too remote. It's conveniently located just a few miles from Sault Ste. Marie ("the Sault"), a vibrant area with various attractions and amenities. The famous Soo Locks, a significant landmark, are within a 20-minute scenic drive (or longer, if you choose to savor the views along the way). The camp also provides easy access to other local points of interest and is described as a great base for exploring the surrounding region.
Promotional information is woven throughout the enthusiastic reviews. The "price can't be beat" suggests excellent value for a waterfront vacation. The repeated emphasis on the owner being "the very best," "wonderful," "very very kind," and "hard working" speaks volumes about the hospitality and personal touch that makes Cherokee Camp so special. The fact that the owner has dedicated his life to maintaining and improving the property over the years further assures a well-cared-for and continuously enhanced experience. The mention of "very reasonable weekly rates" makes it an attractive option for longer stays.
For those who truly want to immerse themselves in nature, there's even an option to inquire about tent spaces, although the reviewer playfully warns to be prepared for potential wetness during rain. This willingness to accommodate different camping preferences highlights the owner's flexibility and desire to share the beauty of Cherokee Camp with all types of outdoor enthusiasts.
As a special bonus, just two miles down the road from Cherokee Camp, visitors can find one of the best viewpoints for watching ships passing by. If you're lucky, this location also offers a chance to witness the breathtaking spectacle of the northern lights. This local tip adds another layer of unique experiences available to guests of Cherokee Camp.
In conclusion, Cherokee Camp offers a truly special "camping near me" experience for those seeking a rustic, family-friendly getaway along the St. Mary's River in Barbeau, Michigan. With its charming cabins, exceptional waterfront access (including docks and pontoon rental), proximity to attractions like Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks, and the renowned hospitality of its owner, it's no wonder that families have been returning for generations. Best place for vacation for a rustic stay! My family has been coming for many years and wouldn't want to go anywhere else! The owner is the very best, the location is perfect, the price can't be beat!
Jun 27, 2024 · Regan ShislerMy own experiences....Oh the memories I have that I could share.50+ years my family, from 4 generations now, have been coming here!!! It's a annual family vacation that's taken place since well...Forever!It's the best location you could ask for!! Not to close but yet not to far.The St Mary's right outside the door. The views, the wildlife, the adventures, the beauty of what Michigan truly is, all exists right outside the door of the cutest rustic cabins you ever did see. With a place to park your vehicle and bring your boat with you. (Boat launch down the road, docks located at cabin front) You only need to bring your clothes and toiletries. Can accommodate large or small groups. Make sure to tell him all parties coming so he can put you in the right cabin. Bunk beds are in some but are big enough to fit 2 adults in each. (Yes, that's right 2 full adults in bunk beds)They have electricity, water, bathrooms, laundry(ask for details), wifi (kindly iffy, but your on vkay. Who cares), stove, fridge, freezer, microwave, coffee pot, toaster, dishes, pots and pans, everything you need except the food. Just a few miles away is the Sault!Easy to get to and easy to get anywhere you want to go from here as well. Many things to do around here or in a drivable distance. The locks are a 20 min drive or longer because you'll probably enjoy the views and drive slow. Lol. It's a one of a kind place, which I consider part of my HOME!!!The owner is a wonderful man and very very kind and hard working. He's lived his life doing this and I'm truly grateful to know him. He's done many things through the years to make the place better and better. Very reasonable weekly rates as well. You won't find anything better on the water. Even has an option to rent the pontoon(ask when calling). There's cabins to rent but also can ask about a tent space if you really wanted to. (Be warned if you do and it rains, you may get a Lil wet, be prepared)Honestly I could go on and on. Like I stated this place is a part of my home and I absolutely love it and recommend it to anyone looking for that one in a million, hole in the wall, place!!!! You won't regret it.2 miles down the road you will also find one of the best views of the ships passing by and if your lucky the northern lights may just show you there spectacular colors!!!I hope this helped anyone with questions. You will love it!!!
Jul 21, 2024 · Laisa BlanchardI went to this place as a child with my grandparents and family. It was owned by my cousins which I believe have passed away. In 1983 and 84 my mother sister and I actually lived in Cabin 6. Minimal indoor plumbing. so you had to go out to the shower facilities to go to the bathroom or take a shower. If you want that rustic campout feel this is the place for you. It hasn't changed in 40 years.
May 06, 2023 · Dottie MarshOwners are wonderful people, the Freighters going by are amazing, lots of chance to catch variety of fish. We've tried a couple others, but since finding this place, have been going for several years. Just love it here😍😍😍
