Double Springs Boat-in Campsite Introduce
Are you a local user in South Carolina seeking a unique "camping near me" experience that involves a bit of adventure? Consider Double Springs Boat-in Campsite, located in Salem, SC 29676, USA. Situated on the shores of a beautiful lake, likely Lake Jocassee given its proximity to Devil's Fork State Park (mentioned in a review of a similar boat-in campsite in the area), this campground offers a distinctive camping opportunity accessible only by boat. Based on customer reviews, it provides a blend of natural beauty and essential amenities, with a few considerations to keep in mind. Let's explore what Double Springs Boat-in Campsite has to offer for your next local getaway.
Location and Environment:
Being a "boat-in campsite," Double Springs is inherently located along the shoreline of a lake, offering a waterfront camping experience. The reviews highlight "gorgeous views" and "some of the clearest cleanest lake water I have ever seen," strongly suggesting a pristine and scenic environment. Given the Salem, SC address and the reference to a similar campsite at Devil's Fork, it's highly probable that Double Springs is located on Lake Jocassee. This lake is renowned for its clear, deep waters and the mountainous backdrop of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, making it a prime location for natural beauty and outdoor activities. For local users searching for "camping near me" with a desire for a lakeside setting and a slightly more secluded feel due to the boat-in access, Double Springs offers an appealing option. The environment is likely characterized by natural shoreline, possibly wooded areas extending to the water's edge, and the sounds of the lake.
The boat-in nature of the campsite adds an element of remoteness and adventure to the camping experience. Campers will need to transport their gear by boat, which can enhance the feeling of escaping into nature. The elevation change mentioned in one review suggests that some campsites might be located on varying levels above the lake, potentially offering different perspectives and requiring a bit of a hike to access from the shore.
Services and Amenities:
The customer reviews provide valuable information about the amenities available at the Double Springs Boat-in Campsite. Each campsite is described as having "a large flat pad surrounded by wooden border," which suggests a well-defined and comfortable area for setting up tents. Additionally, each site includes "a fire pit with grate" for campfires and cooking, as well as "two hooks on a large steel post to hang trash, lanterns, etc.," indicating provisions for organization and waste management. One review also mentions that the sites have a "fire ring with cooking grate," corroborating this amenity.
However, one of the cons mentioned is that "The park didn’t have a map to show us how to find the campsite," which implies that wayfinding might require some initial navigation. Another point is that "The campsites are pretty close together," suggesting that while each site has its own amenities, the overall camping area might not be entirely secluded from other campers.
To summarize the known amenities:
- Large flat tent pads with wooden borders
- Fire pits with cooking grates
- Hooks on a steel post for hanging items
Amenities that are not mentioned but are often associated with boat-in or more primitive campsites might include designated restroom facilities (potentially vault toilets) and possibly shared water sources, although these are not confirmed in the provided reviews. Local users considering "camping near me" at Double Springs should be prepared for a more self-sufficient camping experience given the boat-in nature.
Features and Highlights:
The most significant feature of Double Springs Boat-in Campsite is its accessibility by boat only, offering a unique and potentially more secluded camping experience on the shores of a beautiful lake. The "gorgeous views" and "clearest cleanest lake water" are major highlights, promising a visually stunning and refreshing environment. The well-equipped campsites, with tent pads, fire pits, and hanging hooks, provide a comfortable and functional base for camping.
For local users seeking "camping near me" that goes beyond traditional drive-up campsites, the boat-in access to Double Springs offers an adventurous twist. The opportunity to camp right by the water, enjoy the pristine lake, and wake up to beautiful views is a significant draw. However, potential campers should be aware of the proximity of the campsites to each other and the possibility of boat noise, as mentioned in the cons.
The elevation change at some sites, requiring a bit of a hike, could be seen as both a challenge and a feature, potentially offering more private or scenic spots for those willing to make the climb.

Double Springs Boat-in Campsite Reviews
I should preface my review by saying that just two months before we camped at the Devil’s Fork boat campsite we camped at BWCA lake n Ely, MN. It would be hard to beat that. So:Pros:1. easy access: it took us less than an hour to canoe from the rental area to the campsites.2. Really nice campsites: each campsite has a large flat pad surrounded by wooden border and includes a fire pit with grate and two hooks on a large steel post to hang trash, lanterns, etc.3. Gorgeous views4. Some of the clearest cleanest lake water I have ever seenCons:1. The park didn’t have a map to show us how to find the campsite. It wasn’t terribly complicated, but an updated comprehensive map would have been very helpful.2. The campsites are pretty close together.3. We could hear boat engines late into the evening and early in the morning.4. Even though our side of the cove only hade a few other full sites, it was still pretty noisy from the other side of the cove.
Sep 25, 2021 · Heather PittsNice campsites. Beware the elevation change as some are a bit of a hike. Sites have fire ring with cooking grate.
Jul 26, 2021 · Eric WhiteThis campsite was recently renovated in 2020, and now includes additional campsites, food hooks, leveled pads for tents, and an outhouse. The site is about 3-4 miles from the Devil's Fork Ranger station and boat ramps. The area is quiet and charming, with lots of shoreline to paddle on Lake Jocassee. West of the campsite is a few beautiful waterfalls, while some of the best fishing on the lake can be found along the northeast shores.
May 21, 2021 · Bartholomew RolandThis is an awesome place to camp if you have a boat to get there. The water is so clean and the area is beautiful. Highly recommend it. But be careful what site you get some are straight up a hill.
Jul 30, 2022 · Jennifer PierceNicely maintained campsite, with each campsite located far enough apart to maintain good privacy. More amenable to kayaks and canoes as there is no boat dock.
