Elliott Key Campgrounds Introduce
Hello, local Florida adventurers seeking a distinctive "camping near me" experience! Let's explore Elliott Key Campgrounds, located in Islandia, FL, USA. You can reach them at (305) 230-1148 or +1 305-230-1148. Based on recent customer reviews, Elliott Key offers a unique island camping setting accessible by boat, with nice docks. However, potential visitors should be significantly aware of the insect situation, particularly mosquitoes and no-see-ums, which some campers have found to be severe. Let's delve into the environment, services, and features based on this feedback to help you decide if Elliott Key is the right remote camping spot for you.
Environment: Island Camping in the Florida Keys Area
Elliott Key is part of the upper Florida Keys and is located within Biscayne National Park. This implies a unique island environment characterized by tropical vegetation, proximity to the ocean, and a more remote setting accessible primarily by boat. Campers can likely expect to be surrounded by the natural beauty of the Florida Keys, with opportunities for waterfront activities and enjoying the coastal scenery. One reviewer mentioned that the docks are nice, suggesting that access by boat is a key feature of this location. The wintertime is noted by one camper as being a better period to visit, possibly indicating that environmental conditions, such as temperature or insect activity, are more favorable during those months. However, another reviewer's experience highlights a significant presence of no-see-ums even when the air temperature is in the 60s, suggesting that insects can be a major factor to consider year-round, though perhaps less so in the heart of winter.
Services and Amenities: Basic Facilities in a Remote Setting
Based on the user reviews, Elliott Key Campgrounds appears to offer basic amenities suitable for a more self-sufficient camping experience. One reviewer mentions it as a "free camp site" where they typically leave a tip to help with maintenance and cleanliness, suggesting that there might be minimal or no camping fees, but donations are appreciated. The presence of "nice docks" indicates facilities for boaters. However, the strong emphasis on the severe bug issue implies that amenities might be somewhat limited, focusing on essential infrastructure rather than extensive comforts. While not explicitly stated, one might expect basic restroom facilities, though their condition or availability isn't detailed in these reviews. The focus seems to be on the natural island setting rather than developed campground amenities. Campers should likely be prepared to bring their own supplies and be equipped to handle the environmental conditions, especially insects.
- Nice docks: Facilitating access for boaters.
- Potentially free campsite (donations encouraged): Suggesting minimal fees but reliance on visitor contributions for upkeep.
- Basic maintenance and cleanliness efforts.
The lack of mention of other amenities like showers, picnic tables, or fire rings in these brief reviews suggests that Elliott Key offers a more rustic camping experience where the primary draw is the natural island setting.
Features: Remote Island Access with a Caveat
The key features of Elliott Key Campgrounds are its remote island location and accessibility by boat:
- Island camping experience: Offering a unique getaway from the mainland.
- Access via boat: Making it a destination for boaters and those seeking a more secluded spot.
- Nice docks: Providing good facilities for arriving by water.
- Potentially free (donation-based): Which could be attractive to budget-conscious campers.
However, a significant feature that potential visitors must be aware of is the severe issue with insects, particularly mosquitoes and no-see-ums. One reviewer described the no-see-ums as "freaking insane" even in cooler temperatures and strongly advised against staying for those who dislike bugs. This suggests that being well-equipped to deal with insects is absolutely crucial for anyone considering camping at Elliott Key, especially outside of the winter months.

Elliott Key Campgrounds Reviews
One of our favorite camp grounds. Go well equipped for mosquitoes and Noseaums. We usually go during the wintertime and it’s a lot better. When you come bring like 10-20 bucks to drop off in the tip box. That’s the least we can do at a free camp site. It helps with the maintenance of the campsite and cleanliness.Dale!
Jun 12, 2023 · Jonathan ColonDocks are nice. But… do not stay at this place if you do not like bugs. no-see-ums are freaking insane even when the air temperature is in the 60s!!! Do not stay or pay any money for this bug infested shit hole! We paid $35 and left in 20 minutes when the bugs started coming out at 3:00 pm !! They WILL CARRY YOU AWAY! Totally insane.
Dec 09, 2024 · Mark ElwellGreat expirience, great trails, enjoy it while it is cool. Perfect for a camping/boating-in-one adventure weekend. Explore the perimeter of the island for the best views and most interesting sights. The must sees are an old boat wreck and the jagged rocks by the beach. Great place to get lost.
Mar 07, 2018 · Raymar RodriguezShowers and restrooms very awesome to have available. Marina in great shape (boat slips a little narrow). Bring DEET there is plenty of mosquito activity or long sleeve shirt and pants. BBQ a must, grills on site.
Jun 18, 2020 · T MacPeaceful Island, clean bathroom & shower. You get cell phone reception (not sure if that's good), the rangers were very friendly and courteous.Ranger informed us of the moon flowers...beautiful. Bring a hammock, plenty of fluids, sun screen and bug spray. Relax, unwind and look at the stars.
