The environment surrounding John Pennekamp Camp Area is nothing short of spectacular. As one reviewer aptly described, "This park was BEAUTIFUL!" The camping area itself is noted for being "tucked away and peaceful," creating a serene atmosphere ideal for relaxation. Campers are immersed in a tropical landscape, likely featuring lush vegetation and the gentle sounds of the nearby ocean. The park's main draw, however, is its underwater world. The crystal-clear waters of the Florida Keys are home to vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Reviewers raved about the "wonderful snorkeling right off the beach with plenty of small creatures in shallow & clear water," including sightings of colorful parrotfish. Beyond the immediate campground, the park offers opportunities for observing the famous Florida sunsets, with one visitor exclaiming, "The sunset was absolutely gorgeous!" Wildlife sightings are also a highlight, with at least one lucky camper spotting a manatee. The marina area is described as "really nice and peaceful," offering further opportunities to appreciate the clear waters and abundant fish life. While the park can be busy with day visitors, particularly near the beach, by late afternoon, the crowds tend to dissipate, allowing campers to fully enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings. It's worth noting that the campground's proximity to US 1 offers easy access but can also result in some traffic noise depending on the time of day.
The services at John Pennekamp Camp Area appear to be well-maintained and cater to both tent and RV campers. One reviewer specifically mentioned the "super clean" bathhouse, although they noted that the stalls were "a little narrow." Cleanliness of facilities is a significant plus for any campground, ensuring a comfortable and hygienic stay. These sites are also described as having "plenty of room," even enough to comfortably host additional guests. For tent campers, the "beautiful sites" mentioned in a review suggest well-maintained and potentially scenic areas for pitching tents. The park also offers amenities beyond the campground itself, including a visitor center with programs that at least one camper found enjoyable. The presence of a marina suggests services related to boating, and one reviewer took advantage of the "24' motorboat to tour the reefs," highlighting the availability of boat rentals for exploring the underwater wonders at one's own pace. The staff are described as "lovely" and dedicated to keeping the place "ship shape," indicating a commitment to customer service and park maintenance.

The beautiful sunset views offer a perfect way to end a day of exploration. The availability of both RV and tent sites, including full hookups for RVs, makes the campground accessible to different types of campers. The clean bathhouse facilities contribute to a comfortable stay. The park's location in Key Largo provides easy access to the amenities and attractions of the Upper Keys while still offering a sense of natural escape. John Pennekamp Camp Area Reviews
This park was BEAUTIFUL! The camping area is tucked away and peaceful, making it a great place to relax. The sites are very nice, just a bit on the smaller side. The bathhouse was super clean, though the stalls were a little narrow. The sunset was absolutely gorgeous, and we even spotted a manatee! The marina area was really nice and peaceful — the water was crystal clear, and we saw tons of little fish, including some parrotfish. Overall, an amazing place to stay with a lot of natural beauty.
Apr 13, 2025 · Alyssa McIntyreExcellent campground with beautiful sites. We are tent campers and stayed in the "RV/Tent" site, full hookups with plenty of room for some friends who stayed with us. The park itself can be crowded during the day but by 4 o'clock the beach-goers seem to clear out and things quiet down just in time for the sunset. Wonderful snorkeling right off the beach with plenty of small creatures in shallow & clear water. We rented the 24' motorboat to tour the reefs at our leisure which was worth every penny! Staff are lovely and keep the place ship shape, we also enjoyed the program at the visitor center. US 1 is very close by for easy access, but can also be noisy depending on traffic levels. We will be back at every opportunity!Rooms: 5/5 | Service:

Oct 29, 2024 · Mary JacksonAs a camp host at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, I couldn't be more thrilled with my experience. The staff here was simply amazing - always friendly, helpful, and incredibly organized. Out of all the state parks we’ve hosted at, this one stands out for its exceptional management and dedication to making sure both guests and hosts have the best possible experience. The natural beauty of the park, combined with the top-notch support from the staff, makes hosting here an absolute joy. Five stars all the way!
Jun 27, 2024 · Jose Hernandez4 stars only because of the season. This is a hard review to write because it's early September with day time temperatures in the mid 90's cooling to mid 80's at night. Our camp site has no shade like most others. If you're lucky to have one with a little shade it's way too hot for sitting outside, plus the no s'eems, mosquitoes will eat you up come sun set. I salute all the tent campers that are here. The plus side to this is that the Park is not crowded. Our snorkeling trip to Christ of the abyss had only 18 people aboard, and when we got to the reef there was only one other boat on site. The water was clam & refreshingly nice with good visibility. Hate to be a Debbie downer here , but the reef is not as healthy as it was years ago. All those beautiful pictures of the reef you see are from the past. Growing up in Marathon in 60's and visiting every couple of years we have seen the changes in water quality along with a decline in marine life throughout the Keys. For anybody who's driven over the old 7 mile bridge and had to stop in the middle because the actual drawbridge was open to let a sailboat pass knows what I mean. If you still want to make some memories, always support the State Parks they're here to protect & preserve our natural resources.
