Gerstle Campground

Jenner, CA 95450, USA

4.0
I've stayed here twice now, very lovely campground. I'm giving it four stars because it's extremely windy at times, and though the hike down to the ocean and exploring around that area is awesome, there aren't extensive trails that I am aware of. Still, very nice, I'm kind of on the fence between four and five stars. I'm not going to mention the best site, because it's already almost always booked. Very clean restrooms. - jesse banwell

Gerstle Campground Introduce

For those navigating the "Camping Near Me" platform in search of a scenic and refreshing coastal camping experience, Gerstle Campground, located within Salt Point State Park near Jenner, CA 95450, USA, offers a truly unique and memorable destination. You can reach the park at (707) 847-3221 or +1 707-847-3221 for inquiries, though reservations are typically handled through the state park system.

The environment of Gerstle Campground is its most defining characteristic. Situated "atop the coastal bluffs on the ocean side of Highway One," it provides campers with breathtaking "ocean views and sounds." This direct proximity to the Pacific Ocean means a constant soundtrack of crashing waves and opportunities for stunning sunsets. The campground is part of the larger Salt Point State Park, which encompasses diverse landscapes including rocky promontories, kelp-dotted coves, open grasslands, forested hills, pristine prairies, and even pygmy forests. This variety offers a rich natural backdrop for your stay. While the views are spectacular, it's important to note that the campground can be "extremely windy at times," a common characteristic of exposed coastal locations. Campers who visited in July noted it was "still a bit chilly around 50s-60s with slight wind but not as windy as I expected! It actually even rained in the night but it was a pretty light drizzle. Mostly cloudy and foggy when we went but it was a vibe." This suggests that even in summer, coastal weather can be cool and foggy, requiring appropriate layering of clothing. Despite the potential for wind and chill, the overall ambiance is described as "very lovely" and possessing a distinct "vibe."

Gerstle Campground offers 30 family campsites, generally with a "paved" parking pad, indicating accessibility for both tents and RVs, though there are stated maximum lengths of 31 feet for RVs and 27 feet for trailers. Each campsite is equipped with essential amenities for a comfortable stay, including a "fire-ring," a "picnic table," and a "food locker." These provisions help campers manage their food securely, which is particularly important in state parks with wildlife. While the sites are described as not being "too close to each other," some specific sites, like #25, are noted to "barely have any space at all," advising campers to potentially avoid them if possible. This suggests some variability in site layout and privacy, so checking maps or arriving early might be beneficial.

A notable feature of Gerstle Campground's services is its exceptionally clean restrooms. Reviewers consistently praise them as "surprisingly VERY clean (for a campground) and didn’t encounter that many bugs!" This attention to cleanliness is a significant positive for campers. However, it's crucial to be aware that there are "no showers" available at Gerstle Campground, nor is there a dump station. This means campers should plan accordingly for their hygiene needs and waste disposal. Drinking water is available at the campground. Firewood can be purchased, often at nearby Woodside Campground within Salt Point State Park, at a rate of "$10 a bundle."

Activities and features at Gerstle Campground primarily revolve around its unique coastal setting. There's a "short hike down to the ocean" directly from the campground, allowing easy access to the rocky shoreline for exploration. While one reviewer mentioned "there aren't extensive trails that I am aware of" directly accessible from the campground, Salt Point State Park itself boasts "over 20 miles of hiking and equestrian trails." These trails cover diverse terrain from the bluffs to the pygmy forest and offer opportunities for wildlife viewing, including migrating whales during the season. The Gerstle Cove State Marine Reserve, one of California's first underwater parks, is directly adjacent to the campground. While fishing is prohibited in the marine reserve, the broader area of Salt Point State Park offers opportunities for abalone diving (when in season and permitted) and other types of fishing, including surf fishing, with a valid California fishing license. Gerstle Cove itself can serve as a sheltered launch site for small boats like kayaks, offering access to the ocean for experienced paddlers. Tide-pooling is also a popular activity during low tide, allowing visitors to observe diverse marine life.

Promotional information for Gerstle Campground would emphasize its status as a "lovely campground" with "beautiful scenery" and "stunning coastal views." It appeals to campers who are drawn to the dramatic beauty of the Northern California coast and appreciate well-maintained basic facilities. The direct access to the ocean and opportunities for coastal exploration are key selling points. While it may not be ideal for those seeking extensive forest hiking trails directly from their site, it is perfect for those who want to hear the waves, experience brisk ocean air, and explore tide pools or engage in marine activities. The consistent positive feedback on the cleanliness of the restrooms also serves as a strong promotional point, enhancing comfort for campers. The challenge of securing a spot at this popular destination, particularly the "best site" which is "almost always booked," speaks to its high demand and desirability. For users of "Camping Near Me" seeking a quintessential rugged yet comfortable coastal camping experience in Northern California, Gerstle Campground offers a truly memorable escape into the wild beauty of Salt Point State Park, a place that leaves many campers "on the fence between four and five stars" due to its undeniable charm.
