GRDA No Head Hollow Public Access Area Introduce
Looking for a convenient and scenic outdoor escape right here in your local area? The "camping near me" category brings you closer to hidden gems like the GRDA No Head Hollow Public Access Area. Situated at 14624 OK-10, Tahlequah, OK 74464, USA, this location offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature along the Grand River. While specific services or goods for sale directly at the campground aren't mentioned, its primary offering is access to a beautiful natural environment perfect for day trips and overnight stays for up to seven days, completely free of charge.
The environment at GRDA No Head Hollow is characterized by its stunning river views. Imagine waking up or spending your day overlooking the flowing waters of the Grand River, surrounded by the natural beauty of Oklahoma. This picturesque setting provides a tranquil backdrop for various outdoor activities. The presence of mature trees and natural vegetation contributes to the area's charm, offering shade and a sense of immersion in nature. It's a place where you can truly unwind and appreciate the local landscape.
While the campground operates on a more rustic, free-access model, certain features and considerations are important for local users to be aware of. One of the key highlights, as mentioned by visitors, is the excellent fishing opportunities available in the river. Whether you're an experienced angler or simply enjoy casting a line, the Grand River at this location is known to be a good spot to try your luck. The free camping aspect is also a significant draw for those looking for an affordable way to enjoy the outdoors. Being able to camp for up to seven days without fees offers a fantastic opportunity for extended stays and deeper immersion in the natural surroundings.
However, it's crucial to consider some of the specific feedback from fellow outdoor enthusiasts to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. One reviewer noted that the location might not be ideal for family swimming. This suggests that the river conditions or access points may not be suitable or safe for young children or casual swimming activities. It's always wise to exercise caution and assess the water conditions yourself upon arrival, especially if you plan on engaging in any water-related activities with family.
Another practical point to note is the parking situation. According to a visitor, the parking area is located up a steep hill from the river. This could pose a challenge when transporting gear, especially heavier items like coolers and camping equipment. Local users planning an extended stay or bringing substantial supplies should be prepared for a bit of an uphill trek. Consider packing strategically and perhaps using wheeled carts or making multiple trips to ease the process.
For those planning to utilize the boat ramp, there's a significant piece of information to be aware of. The concrete boat ramp reportedly has a 2-3 ft drop-off above the water, leading directly into the river. This design might require extra caution when launching or retrieving boats, particularly for smaller vessels or less experienced boaters. Furthermore, accessing dry land on the other side of the boat ramp involves wading through thigh-deep water. This is an important consideration for anyone planning to use the boat ramp and should be factored into your plans, especially regarding footwear and protecting any sensitive equipment.
Despite these considerations, the feedback also highlights the positive aspects of GRDA No Head Hollow. The fact that it wasn't crowded suggests that it can be a peaceful and less congested alternative to more developed campgrounds, especially for those seeking a quieter natural experience. The fast-moving water, while perhaps not ideal for swimming, was noted as being fun for older children (4th grade and up). This indicates that the river might offer opportunities for activities like wading, exploring the shoreline (with appropriate caution), or simply enjoying the dynamic flow of the water.
In summary, GRDA No Head Hollow Public Access Area offers local users a valuable resource for experiencing the natural beauty of the area. Its key features include free camping for up to seven days, beautiful river views, and opportunities for fishing. However, potential visitors should be aware of the parking situation involving a steep hill, the reported challenges for family swimming, and the specific design of the boat ramp with a significant drop-off and the need to wade to reach the other side. The less crowded atmosphere and the enjoyment of the fast-moving water for older children are additional points to consider.

GRDA No Head Hollow Public Access Area Reviews
Not ideal for family swimming. Parking is up a steep hill from the river, so hauling a cooler is difficult. The concrete boat ramp has a 2-3 ft. dropoff above the water straight into the river. From the end of the boat ramp to dry land on the other side, you have to wade in thigh-deep water. However, it wasn't crowded. The fast-moving water is fun for older kids (4th grade and up.)
Jul 04, 2024 · C Campbell (Cndc0618)Beautiful spot to come hangout at for the day or camp for free for up to 7 days,Beautiful view over the river with plenty of fishing!
Apr 14, 2024 · Kyle LowmanGreat spot to drop into the river. It was a boat ramp down to water level. After a strong rain, the river was about waste deep at the end of the ramp and calm. The water is moving quick toward the tree line when you first push out into the current. River average was about 4' that day and made for about a 5-6 hour float to the US HWY 62 Bridge Public Access Area.
Aug 22, 2024 · TC SquiresWe stopped just to take scenic pics and use the restroom. It is a very beautiful area! The restroom was kinda odd, but it served its purpose and was clean.
Mar 21, 2022 · Kasee LealGreat spot to stretch your legs, coming or going from Tahlequah with great views of the Illinois River. There is a restroom (sometimes no toilet tissue) and boat access, also fixed grilling grates if you're planning on staying out for a little while.
