For those who own kayaks or canoes, the launch provides a hassle-free entry point to the river. This is a crucial piece of information for local users to be aware of, especially those bringing pets. It highlights the importance of taking precautions against ticks, such as using insect repellent, wearing appropriate clothing, and checking themselves and their pets thoroughly after spending time outdoors at Hog Island Recreation Area. While the reviewer expressed a desire to return, they also noted the need for tick control measures in the campground.

Hog Island Recreation Area, Campground & Kayak Launch Reviews
Beautiful campground our site was large and private. great kayaking. We were there only 16 hours and the ticks were on our dog and us. We would love to go back but they need to spray to control the tick population.
Mar 22, 2025 · Lisa AlwardThis is a very nice campground, it has water on each campsite and a bathroom house with hot water in the center for all guests. Some campsites are not very private but they are all away from each other. On my first day we had 12 deers close to our campsite and also saw an armadillo, that already makes me happy. While the fishing wasn't as good as I expected, there are some very good fishing spots nearby.I would definitely stay here again in the future.
Mar 17, 2023 · MARCUS DE MATOSThis campground would receive a 3 star rating if it weren't for the ticks. My God the ticks at this campground are unbelievable! They're absolutely everywhere and sprays aren't very effective. When they get you it takes a month to heal from the bite. It's reasonably priced, conveniently located right by the Withlacoochee River complete with a little launch for kayaks and canoes, it has showers (which are not well maintained), a spot for trash, running water at every campsite, and friendly patrons. Even with all the good considered, it still deserves a low rating for the out of control ticks.
Jul 02, 2023 · Rebecca KaftonWe had two families one at Campsite #1, the other at Campsite #2. Campsite #2 is huge. Beautiful area. The restrooms were very clean. The trail was easy to walk. The only complaint is that campsite #1 had a tick infestation. 5 of our 9 person party ended up with ticks on them. However, we loved our time there.
Jan 21, 2025 · D MillsIt’s a very beautiful looking campground, and unfortunately that’s the only good thing to say about it. The biggest issue is the complete INFESTATION of ticks. In the less than 3 hours my wife and I spent there we pulled over 10 off of each other and found several more later that night (in a hotel). We saw them crawling on our tent moments after laying it out to set up. Infested…never seen anything like it in many years of camping/hiking etc. We didn’t feel safe with that many around and abandoned ship.On top of that, the campground did not seem to be well maintained. Several of the empty sites we walked around looking for firewood had trash left behind. The bathrooms were dirty and one of the showers was moldy and had broken paneling.A lot of potential here, but the ticks are a serious problem.
