Lakeshore Campground

Lakehead, CA 96051, USA

3.0
We have stopped here a few times on our way once to Disney land with 7 of our grandchildren. It was great for a break for the kids with the pool and all. And we have stopped here again on our way back home. To break up the drive home. Staff is very friendly and love it’s very pet friendly. It’s worth the stop. Good food at the restaurant. I recommend it. Rather stay here than a truck stop. Like I said we have been here before and will be back. - Dianna Wilson

Lakeshore Campground Introduce

Nestled in the scenic landscape of Lakehead, California, Lakeshore Campground offers a unique camping experience for those seeking a convenient overnight stop or a basic outdoor adventure. Located at 96051, USA, this campground has garnered attention from travelers passing through and those looking for a no-frills camping option in Northern California. For local users searching for "camping near me," Lakeshore Campground presents itself as a viable option, particularly for those prioritizing accessibility and a pet-friendly atmosphere.

Based on customer feedback, Lakeshore Campground stands out for its welcoming attitude towards pets. Several reviewers have highlighted its pet-friendly nature, making it an attractive choice for families traveling with furry companions. The campground also boasts a friendly staff, contributing to a positive, albeit brief, stay for many visitors. One reviewer specifically mentioned it as a preferable alternative to a truck stop, emphasizing its suitability for breaking up long journeys, such as trips to Disneyland. The presence of a restaurant on-site is another notable feature, offering convenient dining options for campers who may not want to cook after a long day of travel.

The campground itself is described as a primitive campsite, meaning it provides essential amenities without extensive frills. Each campsite is equipped with fire rings, bear lockers for safe food storage, and picnic tables, catering to the fundamental needs of campers. The infrastructure includes paved loops and parking pads at each site, which are reported to be in good repair and relatively level, accommodating various camping setups, including larger RVs. In fact, one review explicitly mentioned that a 35-foot fifth wheel was easily accommodated, suggesting that "Big Rigs are OK here." Shade availability varies across the campsites, with some offering full shade, others partial, and some with no shade at all, allowing campers to choose based on their preference and the time of year.

However, it's crucial for prospective campers to be aware of certain limitations and drawbacks highlighted in the reviews. The vault toilets are a significant point of concern, with one reviewer describing them as having a strong and unpleasant odor. Additionally, the campground does not offer showers, which may be a deterrent for those planning longer stays or who value hygiene facilities. Water spigots are available, but not all have screw-on bibs suitable for filling RV water tanks, which could pose an inconvenience for some RV travelers.

Noise levels are another factor to consider. The campground is located near the I5 bridge, and road noise from the highway is reported to be persistent throughout the night and audible for a considerable distance. Furthermore, a train line runs along the campground boundary, with frequent train passages and the sounding of horns potentially disrupting sleep. One reviewer recounted experiencing six trains in a single night, with at least two blaring their horns.

Access to Lake Shasta is a significant point of contention. Despite its name, Lakeshore Campground does not provide direct lake access. The presence of an 80-foot bluff prevents any easy access from the campground itself. Moreover, nearby lake access is limited unless one intends to launch a boat, which may not be feasible or desirable for all campers. This lack of direct or easily accessible lake frontage might be disappointing for those specifically seeking a lakeside camping experience.

The payment system at Lakeshore Campground has also drawn criticism. Payment is facilitated through a QR code at a kiosk, but the system only allows for single-night payments. This incurs a $5 service fee for each night's stay, rather than a one-time fee for the entire duration. One reviewer suspects this is a deliberate tactic by the contracted vendor to generate additional charges. Furthermore, the campground does not have an on-site dump station for RV waste. Campers needing this service are directed to Antlers RV Park, where a $20 fee is charged for dumping.

Considering these aspects, Lakeshore Campground offers a basic, no-frills camping experience primarily geared towards overnight stays and travelers seeking a pet-friendly environment with essential amenities. While it provides convenient access to the I5 and a restaurant on-site, the lack of showers, the unpleasant condition of the vault toilets, the persistent noise from the highway and trains, the absence of direct lake access, and the potentially costly payment and RV dumping arrangements are important factors for potential visitors to weigh. For local users searching for "camping near me," Lakeshore Campground might serve as a functional stopover or a very basic camping option, but those seeking a more amenity-rich or scenic lakeside experience may need to explore other campgrounds in the vicinity.
