Old Man Campground

Lakehead, CA 96051, USA

4.0
Pleasant and private spot to camp on a dried up finger of the lake. Theres more then a few spots to set up camp; about three sites back in the tress and lots of spots out in the open. I stayed there in February 2022 in one of the spots in the trees. Gets three stars cause its free. Its a decent spot, but its the kinda site that is littered with bullets and some trash. I also don't recommend for anyone without four-wheel drive and high clearence. The road in has been burmed and was barely drivable on the way in with my Saab 9-3. I almost got stuck coming out. - Hazel Henry

Old Man Campground Introduce

For local adventurers in Northern California seeking "camping near me" that offers a more rustic and potentially free experience, Old Man Campground near Lakehead presents an option worth considering. Located on what appears to be a dried-up section of the lakebed near Shasta Lake, this campground offers a degree of privacy and multiple potential camping spots. However, based on recent user reviews, it's crucial to be aware of the access challenges, the complete lack of facilities, and the potential for litter before deciding to camp here.

The environment of Old Man Campground is described as "pleasant and private," situated on a former "finger of the lake" that has dried up. This unique setting likely offers a different landscape compared to traditional lakeside campgrounds, potentially with open areas and sections shaded by trees. One reviewer who camped in February 2022 in a spot within the trees noted the privacy of their location. The campground appears to offer a variety of camping spots, with "about three sites back in the trees" for those seeking shade and seclusion, as well as "lots of spots out in the open" for those who prefer more expansive views or easier setup.

A significant feature of Old Man Campground, and the primary reason one reviewer gave it three stars, is that it is "free." In a region where camping fees are common, the availability of a no-cost camping option can be a major draw for budget-conscious travelers or those seeking a more off-grid experience. However, it's important to understand that free camping often comes with the trade-off of fewer or no amenities and potentially less maintenance.

One of the most critical aspects highlighted in the reviews is the challenging access to Old Man Campground. Both reviewers strongly recommend having a vehicle with "four-wheel drive and high clearance." One camper recounted their near-stuck experience driving in with a Saab 9-3, emphasizing that "the road in has been bermed and was barely drivable." They almost got stuck while leaving, further underscoring the difficult road conditions. This suggests that the access road is unmaintained, potentially rough, and may include obstacles like berms (raised banks of earth), making it unsuitable for standard passenger vehicles, especially those with low ground clearance or without four-wheel drive capability. Attempting to reach this campground without an appropriate vehicle could result in getting stuck and requiring assistance.

In terms of services and amenities, Old Man Campground is explicitly stated to have "no restrooms." This lack of toilet facilities is a significant consideration for campers and necessitates being entirely self-sufficient in terms of sanitation. Campers would need to bring and use appropriate methods for human waste disposal, adhering to Leave No Trace principles to minimize environmental impact. The absence of restrooms also implies the likely absence of other common campground amenities such as potable water sources, trash receptacles, picnic tables, or fire rings (though one reviewer mentioned setting up camp, implying they might have used a portable fire pit or there were remnants of previous ones). The overall impression is that this is a very primitive camping area with no infrastructure provided.

Another concerning issue raised by a reviewer is that the campsite they used was "littered with bullets and some trash." This suggests a potential lack of management or upkeep, leading to the accumulation of debris left by previous visitors. The presence of bullet casings indicates that the area might be used for recreational shooting, which could be a safety concern for campers, especially those with children or pets. The trash further detracts from the natural beauty of the location and underscores the importance of responsible camping practices, including packing out all waste.

Despite these drawbacks, one reviewer still found it to be a "great place to spend the night," likely due to the pleasant and private setting on the former lakebed. This suggests that for those with the right vehicle and who are prepared for a completely self-sufficient camping experience, the natural environment and potential for solitude might outweigh the lack of amenities and the presence of some litter. However, it's crucial to go in with realistic expectations and be prepared for the challenges.

Given its nature as a free and seemingly unmanaged camping area, there is no formal promotional information available. The "promotion" comes from the fact that it's a no-cost option in a potentially scenic location near Shasta Lake. However, the strong warnings about the access road and the mention of litter and lack of facilities serve as important counterpoints that potential users must consider. The privacy and the unique environment of camping on a dried-up part of the lake are the inherent draws, but these come with significant responsibilities and potential inconveniences.

For local users searching for "camping near me" on a budget who own a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance and are comfortable with primitive camping conditions (i.e., no restrooms, potential for no potable water, and the need to manage all waste), Old Man Campground might be an option to explore. However, it is strongly recommended to exercise caution when accessing the site due to the road conditions and to be prepared to be entirely self-sufficient. Additionally, it would be responsible to pack out any existing trash found at a campsite to help preserve the natural environment for future visitors.

In conclusion, Old Man Campground near Lakehead, CA, offers a free and potentially private camping experience on a dried-up section of the lake. Its environment is described as pleasant, with a mix of open and wooded camping spots. However, it is essential to be aware of the significant access challenges, requiring a four-wheel drive vehicle with high clearance. The campground has no restrooms or other apparent amenities, and there may be issues with litter and bullet casings. While it can be a "great place to spend the night" for the right kind of camper who is fully prepared for primitive conditions, the lack of facilities and the access difficulties make it unsuitable for many and necessitate a cautious approach. Responsible camping practices, including waste disposal and potentially cleaning up existing litter, are crucial for those who choose to use this free camping area.
