Limekiln State Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a picturesque "camping near me" experience within the stunning Adirondack region of New York, Limekiln State Campground, located on Campsite Rd, Old Forge, NY 13420, offers a beautiful lakeside setting on a well-maintained property. As a typical older New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) campground, it provides a more traditional camping experience with a focus on nature and essential amenities. Based on recent customer reviews, let's explore the environment, services, features, and important considerations for planning your local getaway to Limekiln State Campground.
The environment of Limekiln State Campground is a major highlight, with reviewers consistently praising its "great location" and "beautiful lake." Situated in the Adirondacks, the campground is surrounded by natural beauty, offering scenic views and a tranquil atmosphere. The lake itself is a significant feature, providing opportunities for various water activities such as swimming, boating, and fishing. Imagine spending your days enjoying the pristine waters and the peaceful ambiance of an Adirondack lake.
In terms of services, Limekiln State Campground operates as a NYS DEC facility, which typically implies a focus on basic amenities and natural resource preservation. Reviews indicate that the campground is "taken care of," suggesting that while it might be an older facility, it is maintained to a reasonable standard. The caretaker is mentioned as being "very nice," contributing to a positive and welcoming atmosphere. The overall friendliness of other campers is also noted, enhancing the sense of community within the campground.
One of the key features of Limekiln State Campground is its direct access to the lake, making it ideal for swimming and other water-based activities. While there are no lifeguards on duty at the beach, the presence of a beach area is a significant draw for families and individuals looking to enjoy the water. Boating and fishing are also mentioned as popular activities on the lake, offering further opportunities for recreation and exploration of the surroundings.
For those planning to bring larger campers or RVs, it's important to be aware that the roads within the campground are described as "narrow and tight." This may limit the accessibility of certain sites for bigger rigs, and it's advisable to inquire about site suitability when making a reservation. Campers with larger vehicles will likely have a restricted selection of sites that can accommodate their size.
Regarding facilities, Limekiln State Campground has at least one shower facility. While it is noted as being older, the water was reported to be hot, which is a welcome amenity for campers looking to freshen up. However, one reviewer mentioned that there was only one shower building on-site and that it was not very centrally located, which might be a consideration depending on the location of your campsite.
An important aspect of camping at Limekiln State Campground, given its location in the Adirondacks, is the presence of wildlife, specifically bears. Campers are advised to be cautious about leaving food or other attractants out, as "frequent bear visits in the campground" are reported. To mitigate this risk, the campground provides bear boxes at each campsite, offering a secure place to store food and other items that might attract bears. This is a crucial safety feature that local users should utilize diligently.
For pet owners, Limekiln State Campground does allow dogs. However, there are specific rules that must be followed. Campers are required to present a valid rabies document for their dogs, and pets are not permitted on the beach or in the picnic area. This is important information for local campers who plan to bring their furry companions along.
Connectivity is another factor to consider. Reviews indicate that AT&T cell phone service has reception at the campground, but other carriers reportedly do not. This limited cell service might be a consideration for those who need to stay connected or rely on their phones for communication.
In terms of recreational amenities beyond the lake, Limekiln State Campground does not have a playground or a baseball field. The picnic area is located on the hill above the beach, offering a scenic spot for outdoor meals.
Overall, the sentiment from reviewers is positive, with one stating it's a "really great campground" with "friendly staff, great views, nice picnic areas." The availability of spacious campsites, enough for tents and a car with room for pets to roam within the designated area, is also appreciated. The provision of bear lockers offers peace of mind regarding food storage and safety.
However, potential local users should be aware of the reported negatives, such as the lack of locks on the bathroom stalls in the women's restroom and the single, potentially distant shower building. These are minor inconveniences mentioned alongside the otherwise positive experiences.
For local residents seeking a "camping near me" experience that combines a beautiful lakeside environment in the Adirondacks with a friendly atmosphere and essential amenities, Limekiln State Campground is a strong contender. The opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing on the lake are significant draws, as is the peace of mind provided by the bear safety measures. However, it's important to consider the limitations regarding road and site sizes for larger RVs, the single shower facility, the pet restrictions on the beach and picnic area, and the limited cell service.

Limekiln State Campground Reviews
Great location, beautiful lake. This is a typical older NYS DEC campground but taken care of. The caretaker was very nice, most other campers were very friendly and helpful. The roads are narrow and tight for bigger campers and if you have a camper of size you will be limited in which sites you can use. The lake is great. There is one shower facility but the water was hot although it is old. No lifeguards at the beach and you must be careful about what you leave out due to frequent bear visits in the campground. Bear boxes on each site. Dogs are allowed but you must present a valid rabies document and they are not allowed on the beach or picnic area. ATT has reception but no other carriers seem to have service. No playground or baseball field. Picnic area is on the hill above the beach.
Aug 19, 2024 · Joseph StaceyOverall a really great campground. Friendly staff, great views, nice picnic areas. We only had 2 negatives, the bathroom stalls did not have locks (women's restroom) and there was only one shower building on site which was not very close. Otherwise, we had a great trip and really enjoyed our campsite. There was enough space for our tents and car, with plenty of room for our pup to roam around within that space. The bear lockers were a great piece of mind too!
Jun 16, 2021 · Louli KourkounakisThis was our first time to the Adirondacks. The lake was beautiful, we saw loons for the first time, and staff was friendly and helpful. Sites vary greatly, from nice water front, large wooded, to small tent sites. They're primitive sites, so you'll need a generator if you want power. Short, odd times for running them though: 9-11am and 4-7pm.Only one bath house for 200+ sites, and only 4 stalls each for men/women. They're only open 9am-9pm, so getting a shower can be problematic. The restroom near our site was generally kept clean. Your typical restroom for rustic camping. Nothing fancy, but flush toilets were nice as opposed to the 'outhouse' style toilets we've had at other parks. It didn't seem like quiet time was enforced. We're up late, so mostly didn't bother us. Our friends had neighbors that had kids making a ruckus past midnight, so they weren't too pleased. If you're early to bed, your mileage may vary (depending on your neighbors).Old Forge is a great little town with everything you need. Had some great pizza and fudge there. Inlet, which is closer, has a really nice ice cream place, too.Overall, we enjoyed our camping/kayaking/shopping here. We'd probably stay again, but we're hoping to explore more of the Adirondacks next year.
Aug 22, 2017 · Troy TudorWe tent camped at a beautiful site on the water. We could hear the water on the shore at night and the loons! The bathrooms were a not as nice as I hoped and there is one shower building for the entire campground so we had to drive to take a shower everyday.
Aug 28, 2018 · Jessica StantonIt was not a great experience. Beautiful property, but everyone was loud and obnoxious until all hours of the night. The bathhouse was disgusting, and every bathroom was covered in graffiti. The Rangers did not have this place under control.
