Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort Introduce
For local residents in Virginia and the surrounding areas yearning for a genuine escape from the digital world and a deep immersion into nature, Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort, nestled in the heart of the Virginia mountains near Montebello, offers a unique and cherished "camping near me" experience. More than just a campground, Montebello is described by its loyal visitors as a "ritual," a place where peace begins, and the embrace of nature takes precedence over the distractions of modern life. This isn't a flashy or upscale resort; instead, it's a welcoming haven that feels like visiting old friends in a setting of natural beauty.
A Sanctuary Where Digital Silence Reigns
One of the most distinctive features of Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort is its intentional lack of cell service. As one reviewer eloquently put it, "cell service dies and peace begins." For those seeking a true digital detox, this is not a bug but a significant feature. Visitors are advised to download maps before their arrival, allowing them to fully disconnect from notifications, emails, and the constant connectivity that often dominates daily life. The environment here encourages a melting away of the digital world, replaced by the tranquility of mountains, the rustling of trees, and the "quiet hum of nature" that many have forgotten exists. This makes it an ideal "camping near me" destination for locals wanting to truly unplug and recharge.
A General Store with Local Charm
Adding to the unique character of Montebello is its nearby general store, described as a "gem" and "like something from a postcard your grandparents kept in a drawer." This isn't just a place to grab forgotten necessities; it's an experience in itself, offering a nostalgic charm and a connection to local commerce. Visitors make it a point to support this store, even when they don't need anything, recognizing the importance of supporting local businesses over large convenience chains. This aspect of Montebello fosters a sense of community and encourages visitors to engage with the local flavor of the region.
Heartfelt Hospitality from Salt-of-the-Earth Staff
The staff at Montebello, particularly Stephanie, are consistently praised for their warm and welcoming demeanor. Described as "salt of the earth" and "like someone pulled straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting," they embody the genuine and friendly spirit of the resort. The reviewers highlight the personal touch, such as a free Easter egg hunt thrown for the kids without any hidden agendas, emphasizing the family-centric ethos of the resort. The feeling is that "family is the heartbeat here," suggesting a welcoming and inclusive environment for all visitors.
Diverse Camping Options to Suit Every Preference
Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort caters to a variety of camping styles. For those seeking a truly immersive natural experience, the primitive campsites offer a chance to sleep under a canopy of stars that feel "close enough to touch." However, for those who prefer more comfort, the resort also offers cabins and RV hook-ups. Even tent sites with electric are available for a gentler transition into the unplugged lifestyle. This range of options ensures that local users, regardless of their camping preference, can find a suitable way to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of Montebello.
Water Therapy and Lakeside Activities
For those seeking a bit of "water therapy," Montebello boasts a lake where guests can enjoy free use of pedal boats and canoes. Without any extra charge, visitors can simply grab the keys from the general store and spend time gliding on the water, further enhancing the relaxing and recreational opportunities available at the resort. This inclusive amenity adds significant value to the "camping near me" experience, providing a fun and refreshing way to connect with the natural environment.
Proximity to the Stunning Crabtree Falls
Adding to the allure of Montebello's location is its close proximity to Crabtree Falls, just a short 10-minute drive away. Described as a "stunning hike," the trail to the falls is lush, wild, and offers a rewarding challenge leading to breathtaking views. The glacial water at the falls provides a refreshing (and sometimes bracing) opportunity for a dip, even in winter, described as a "shock to the system, a reset button for the soul." The easy access to this natural wonder makes Montebello an even more attractive "camping near me" option for local outdoor enthusiasts.
A Place Where Memories Are Made
Montebello isn't just a place to camp; it's a place where lasting memories are created. Reviewers share heartfelt experiences of their children learning to skip stones, roast marshmallows, and embrace the simple joys of nature. For many, visiting Montebello has become a cherished tradition, spanning years, with the expectation that future generations will also come to experience its magic. This speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and the special place Montebello holds in the hearts of its visitors.
Excellent Fishing Opportunities
True to its name, Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort offers great fishing opportunities. It's highlighted as an "amazing place to teach people how to fish," suggesting a welcoming environment for both experienced anglers and beginners. The beautiful location further enhances the fishing experience, providing a serene and picturesque setting to cast a line. The caring and knowledgeable staff and management add to the positive fishing experience, ensuring that visitors have the guidance and support they need.
A Call to Unplug, Breathe, and Support Local
The overall message from visitors is a strong recommendation to "come, unplug, breathe" and experience the unique charm of Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort. There's also a call to "spend your dollars where they count," supporting a local establishment that genuinely cares about its visitors and the natural environment. While the resort might be described as needing "a little love," the overwhelming sentiment is that it gives back tenfold in terms of peace, memories, and genuine hospitality. For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that offers a true escape and a connection to nature and community, Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort is a treasure waiting to be discovered.

Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort Reviews
Tucked deep in the heart of the Virginia mountains, where cell service dies and peace begins, there is a place that’s more than a campground. It’s a ritual... Montebello Camping & Fishing Resort isn’t trying to be flashy or upscale... it doesn’t need to be. It’s the kind of place that welcomes you like an old friend with dirt on its boots and your favorite beer in hand. We’ve been coming here for the better part of a decade. Me, my family, and a deep rooted need to escape the digital chokehold of modern life. There is no signal out here, and that’s exactly the point. You download your maps before you start your journey, and then the world melts away. No notifications. No emails. Just mountains, trees, and that quiet hum of nature you forgot existed. The general store nearby is a gem, like something from a postcard your grandparents kept in a drawer. It’s got everything you need and nothing you don’t. We make it a point now to shop there, even if we didn’t forget anything, because supporting local matters, and this place deserves your dollars more than any convenience chain ever will. The staff? Salt of the earth. Stephanie, in particular....always smiling, always warm. Like someone pulled straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. This year they threw an Easter egg hunt for the kids. No charge. No gimmicks. Just pure, wholesome joy. Family is the heartbeat here.We pitch our tent in the primitive sites, where the stars feel close enough to touch, but there’s something for everyone. Cabins, RV hook-ups, even tent sites with electric if you’re not quite ready to let go. Want a little water therapy? The lake's got free pedal boats and canoes, no extra charge, just grab the keys from the general store and your set.And when the morning fog lifts, take the short drive out to Crabtree Falls (10min). It’s a stunning hike, lush, wild, and just challenging enough to make you earn the view. The water’s cold. Glacial. But we always take a dip. Even in winter. Especially in winter. It’s a shock to the system, a reset button for the soul (we all need it)Montebello isn’t just a campground. It’s a memory machine. It’s where my kids learned to skip stones, roast marshmallows, and get dirt under their nails. It’s tradition now, six, maybe seven years running, and I know they’ll bring their own kids here one day.So come. Unplug. Breathe. Spend your dollars where they count. This place could use a little love, and trust me, it’ll give it back tenfold!
Apr 22, 2025 · Michael AustinThe fishing is great and it is an amazing place to teach people how to fish. It is in a beautiful location and the staff and management know what they are doing and actually care about the park. We went last weekend and my girlfriend had so much fun she booked it again for their last weekend for the year. She didn’t want to wait till next year.
Oct 23, 2024 · Nick RemzWhat an amazing adventure camping here ! Wonderful kind friendly folks! Beautiful location absolutely perfect scenery. We squeezed our 30ft travel trailer in here on an amazing view hillside lake view site that was semi level but we made it work ! This place is absolutely perfect but make sure you can tow with confidence! Water sewer electric 30 amp site worked and got us thru the weekend ! No cell service or internet so be ready to go off the grid ! Enjoy it !
Oct 20, 2024 · Bryan TuckerOf course, when I rated the rooms five star, I meant the campsite. With water, electricity and shade provided along with lakefront views. I don’t know what more you would want from a family, friendly and very clean campsite. Had a great time with my boys. They caught lots of fish, highly recommend driving down to the Tye river so your kids can play. Mine had a blast, especially riding the rapids. Can’t wait to return. Had a great time catching up with my long-term friend as well.
Aug 12, 2024 · bdsokolI have been to Montebello several times and I must say the cabins are excellent especially 7 ridges with a great view but all the cabins are great depending on how much room you need. The staff is super nice and I try to visit twice a year. Highly recommend this place for a getaway 👌
