Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp Introduce
For local residents in Kentucky and those exploring the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, seeking 'camping near me' with convenient lake access, Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp, located on Forest Service Rd 171 in Murray, KY 42071, offers a unique self-service camping experience with a strong emphasis on its proximity to the water and the natural environment. Based on available customer reviews, Redd Hollow provides a tranquil setting for boaters and nature enthusiasts, although potential visitors should be aware of its self-service nature and some reported maintenance needs.
One reviewer enthusiastically describes Redd Hollow as "A boaters paradise!" This immediately highlights a primary feature and appeal of the campground: its direct access and facilities catering to those wishing to enjoy the waters of Land Between the Lakes, likely Kentucky Lake. The presence of a boat ramp on-site makes it exceptionally convenient for local users who own or rent boats to launch and retrieve their vessels, allowing for easy and frequent access to the lake for fishing, watersports, or leisurely cruising.
The same reviewer also notes the peaceful atmosphere, mentioning that "In mid april the place is almost empty!!" This suggests that during certain times of the year, particularly the shoulder seasons, Redd Hollow offers a secluded and less crowded camping experience. For local users seeking tranquility and a break from more bustling campgrounds, the potential for a quieter stay at Redd Hollow could be a significant advantage. This peaceful environment allows for a more intimate connection with nature and a greater sense of privacy.
Nature enthusiasts will likely appreciate the rich biodiversity observed at Redd Hollow. The reviewer specifically mentions an abundance of birdlife, including "Birds, warblers, wood peckers, heron, eagles!!!" This makes the campground an excellent location for bird watching, offering opportunities to spot a variety of species in their natural habitat. For local users who enjoy wildlife observation and photography, Redd Hollow's environment provides a compelling reason to visit, especially during migration periods when bird activity is high.
The reviewer also identifies "Site 30" as "the best ( but not as close to boat ramp)." This provides valuable insight for potential campers regarding site selection. While the proximity to the boat ramp might be a priority for some, those seeking a potentially more scenic or spacious site might prefer location 30. This also indicates that the campground offers a variety of campsites with potentially different characteristics and proximity to amenities.
It is important to note the self-service nature of the campground, as indicated by the name. One key aspect of this is the absence of a "water pump," meaning campers need to bring their own potable water supply. This is a crucial piece of information for local users planning a stay, as they will need to ensure they have an adequate amount of water for drinking, cooking, and other needs. The self-service model suggests a more rustic and independent camping experience, where campers are responsible for their own supplies and setup.
Despite the self-service nature, the availability of a "Clean vault toilet" is a significant convenience. Vault toilets, while non-flushing, provide a sanitary and maintained restroom facility for campers. The positive comment on its cleanliness suggests that the basic sanitary needs of visitors are being met, which is an important consideration for any camping trip.
The reviewer also points out that "Other things to do also close by in the Land Between the Lakes NP." This highlights the strategic location of Redd Hollow within a larger recreational area known for its diverse attractions and activities. Local users camping at Redd Hollow can easily access hiking trails, wildlife viewing areas, historical sites, and other amenities and points of interest within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, enhancing their overall experience.
However, it is crucial to consider the feedback from another reviewer who noted that "The campground could use some maintenance, busted picnic tables and fire rings." This suggests that while the natural environment and lake access are appealing, some of the infrastructure at individual campsites may be in need of repair. Local users should be prepared for the possibility of encountering these issues and perhaps bring their own portable picnic table or be prepared to work with the existing fire ring if it is less than ideal.
Despite the maintenance concerns, this second reviewer also acknowledges the "beautiful views of the lake," reinforcing the scenic appeal of Redd Hollow. The combination of lake access and picturesque surroundings remains a significant draw for those seeking 'camping near me' with waterfront vistas.
The second reviewer also corroborates the cleanliness of the sanitary facilities, stating, "The vault toilet was very clean." This consistency in feedback regarding the cleanliness of the vault toilet is a positive indicator for potential campers.
In summary, Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp offers a unique camping experience centered around its access to the lake and its natural environment within the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. It is particularly appealing to boaters and nature lovers, offering opportunities for bird watching and peaceful lakeside stays. The self-service nature requires campers to be self-sufficient in terms of water supply. While the vault toilet is reported as clean, potential visitors should be aware that some campsite amenities like picnic tables and fire rings may be in need of maintenance. The quieter atmosphere, especially during off-peak seasons, can be a significant draw for those seeking a more secluded experience.
For local users considering Redd Hollow for 'camping near me', the key takeaways are its prime location for lake access and boating, its potential for wildlife observation, and its self-service nature, particularly regarding water. The beautiful lake views and generally peaceful environment are strong positives. However, it is advisable to be prepared for potentially less-than-perfect campsite infrastructure due to the reported maintenance needs.
As a self-service campground, it is unlikely that there are specific promotional offers. However, the primary draw is the access to the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of Land Between the Lakes, coupled with the convenience of the boat ramp. For more information, you can contact the general information line for Land Between the Lakes at (270) 924-2000, which is also listed as the phone number for Redd Hollow. Inquiring about the current conditions of the campsites and boat ramp might be beneficial before planning your visit.
In conclusion, Redd Hollow Self-Service Campground & Boat Ramp provides a lakeside camping option for those seeking a self-reliant experience within the Land Between the Lakes. Its appeal lies in its direct boat access, beautiful lake views, and opportunities for nature appreciation, particularly bird watching. While some maintenance issues with campsite amenities have been reported, the clean vault toilet and the overall natural setting make it a noteworthy option for local boaters and campers looking for a quieter retreat.

Nov 07, 2024 · Xavier HamiltonEnjoyed our camping trip at redd hollow, its our favorite camping spot. Also a great spot for kayaking or floating and swimming for a day trip. So sad that every time we go now we fill a trash bag picking up other peoples garbage. There is a dumpster but sadly people are lazy.
Jun 06, 2022 · Theresia WA lot of spots to choose from all have a picnic table and fire ring. Travel trailers and tents are allowed. One vault toilet. Next to the bay. Shade at most spots. Some with lake view.
