Campground is nice and the bathrooms are good for being campground. The spots are first come first serve so they are hard to get as the Bear lake crowd snaps them up quickly.Negative points are the "Group site". we had two camp trailers and there was no way to fit them in the space provided. We ended have to split up and one group get a airB&B. Also most of the other sites pretty short not great for long trailers. - Ryan Saunders

Saint Charles Campground Introduce

For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" with close proximity to the stunning Bear Lake, Saint Charles Campground in St Charles, Idaho, offers a convenient option. Situated in a prime location, this campground provides a basecamp for exploring the popular Bear Lake North Shore area and nearby attractions like the Minnetonka Cave. While it boasts certain appealing features, potential visitors should also be aware of some limitations highlighted by previous campers to ensure it aligns with their needs and expectations.

One of the frequently mentioned positive aspects of Saint Charles Campground is that it is generally considered "nice," and the bathroom facilities are reported to be "good for being campground" restrooms. This suggests that while they may not be luxurious, the restrooms are well-maintained and provide a satisfactory level of cleanliness for campers, which is often a significant factor in the overall camping experience.

The campground's proximity to the North Shore of Bear Lake is a major draw for many visitors. This location provides easy access to the lake's recreational activities, including swimming, boating, and enjoying the scenic beauty of the "Caribbean of the Rockies." For local users wanting to spend their days at Bear Lake and have a nearby place to camp for the night, Saint Charles Campground offers that convenience.

However, a crucial point to consider is that the campsites at Saint Charles Campground operate on a "first come first serve" basis. This means that reservations are not typically accepted, and securing a spot can be challenging, especially during peak season and weekends when the "Bear Lake crowd snaps them up quickly." Local users planning a stay, particularly during busy times, should be prepared to arrive early to have a better chance of finding an available site. This policy introduces an element of uncertainty and requires flexibility in travel plans.

Another significant limitation reported by campers concerns the size and suitability of the campsites, particularly for those with larger recreational vehicles. One reviewer specifically pointed out issues with the "Group site," stating that it was inadequately sized to accommodate two camp trailers, forcing their group to split up and seek alternative accommodation. This is a critical piece of information for local users planning to camp with multiple vehicles or in larger groups. It's advisable to inquire directly with the campground about the dimensions and layout of group sites before arriving with multiple trailers.

Furthermore, the same reviewer noted that "most of the other sites pretty short not great for long trailers." This suggests that while the campground might accommodate smaller tents and vehicles adequately, those with longer trailers or RVs may find the majority of the individual campsites too short to comfortably fit their setup. Local users who own larger trailers should carefully consider this limitation and perhaps explore other campgrounds in the area that are better equipped to handle longer vehicles.

Another environmental factor to be aware of is the campground's proximity to the road. One reviewer mentioned that it is "fairly close to the road" and experiences "a lot of traffic coming and going from other campsites and Minnetonka caves." This indicates that the campground might not offer the most secluded or tranquil atmosphere, as road noise and traffic could be noticeable. Local users seeking a completely quiet and remote camping experience might find this aspect less appealing. However, for those prioritizing convenience and access to nearby attractions, the proximity to the road might be less of a concern.

On a more positive note, the campground features a small natural element that can be particularly enjoyable for families with children. There is a "small creek (St. Charles Creek) that is right by a few of the camp sights making it fun for the kids." The presence of a creek offers opportunities for gentle play, exploring, and enjoying the natural sounds of flowing water, adding a family-friendly dimension to the camping experience for those lucky enough to secure a creek-side spot.

To summarize the key aspects of Saint Charles Campground for local users considering "camping near me":

  • **Proximity to Bear Lake North Shore:** Convenient access to the popular lake and its recreational activities.
  • **Clean Bathrooms:** Restroom facilities are reported to be well-maintained for a campground setting.
  • **Creek Access:** Some campsites are located near St. Charles Creek, providing a pleasant environment for families with children.

However, it's crucial to also consider the following limitations:

  • **First Come First Serve:** Campsites are not reservable and can be difficult to secure, especially during peak season.
  • **Short Campsites:** Most individual sites are reportedly short and may not be suitable for longer trailers or RVs.
  • **Inadequate Group Site:** The group site may not be large enough to accommodate multiple camp trailers.
  • **Road Proximity:** The campground is close to the road and experiences traffic from other campsites and the Minnetonka Cave area, potentially impacting tranquility.

Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the campground's primary appeal seems to be its location near Bear Lake and its functional facilities. Local users who prioritize these aspects and are flexible with securing a first-come first-serve site might find it a suitable option, especially for shorter stays or those with smaller camping setups.

For local residents looking for "camping near me" primarily for access to Bear Lake and are comfortable with the first-come first-serve system, Saint Charles Campground offers a conveniently located option with decent facilities. However, those with longer trailers or those seeking a guaranteed spot and a quieter environment might need to explore alternative campgrounds in the vicinity. It is advisable to contact the provided phone numbers, (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777, to inquire about the specific dimensions of campsites, the layout of the group site, and any current conditions or recommendations before planning your visit.
