Sherwood Forest Campground Introduce
For local residents in Hillsboro, Illinois, and the surrounding areas searching for "camping near me," Sherwood Forest Campground, located at 920 City Lake Rd, Hillsboro, IL 62049, USA, presents itself as a potential option. However, based on recent feedback from campers, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of certain aspects of this campground before making a reservation. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of the environment, services, and features of Sherwood Forest Campground as described by recent customer experiences.
One recurring theme in the reviews is the presence of a significant number of permanent residents at Sherwood Forest Campground. One camper explicitly stated, "Most lots are shaded and altered are lots of permanent live in people there," and another described the atmosphere as feeling "more like a permanent housing complex for elderly" rather than a traditional campground. This dynamic appears to influence the overall environment and potentially the interactions between seasonal campers and permanent residents. One reviewer reported that "staff allow permanent residents to treat seasonal campers very rude because they don’t want to lose their permanent campers," which raises concerns about the overall guest experience for short-term visitors.
Cleanliness is another area where feedback suggests potential issues. The same reviewer who mentioned the rude treatment also noted that the campground was "Not very clean." While another reviewer found the "bathrooms are fairly clean," the discrepancy suggests that cleanliness might be inconsistent or that different areas of the campground may vary in their upkeep. Prospective campers should be prepared for potentially varying levels of cleanliness throughout the facilities.
In terms of amenities, one significant limitation mentioned is the lack of sewer hookups. A reviewer explicitly stated, "The grounds are nice, but there are no sewer hook ups." This is a crucial piece of information for RV campers, as it would necessitate utilizing the campground's dump station, if one is available, or planning their stay accordingly with their holding tank capacities. The availability of other hookups, such as water and electricity, is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, so it would be prudent for potential visitors to inquire about these when contacting the campground.
The handling of reservations also appears to be an area of concern. One reviewer recounted a negative experience, stating, "They take reservations which the spot I had reserved was given to another camper." This indicates a potential issue with the campground's reservation system and could lead to inconvenience and frustration for arriving guests. It highlights the importance of confirming reservations directly with the campground closer to the arrival date.
Noise levels and campground rules are also points raised in the reviews. One camper noted, "Kids can’t be loud after the sun goes down without getting complaints," suggesting a potentially strict noise policy, particularly in the evening. This might be a consideration for families with young children who tend to be more active. Additionally, the same reviewer mentioned being disturbed by the "sound of a bobcat backup alarm that went on for the better part of the day" on multiple mornings until they moved to a different location within the campground. This suggests potential noise disturbances from equipment or vehicles within the campground, at least in certain areas.
On a more positive note, one reviewer did mention that "The grounds are nice" and that "Most lots are shaded." Shaded campsites are generally desirable, especially during warmer weather, as they provide relief from the sun and contribute to a more comfortable outdoor experience. The presence of a lake, as indicated by the address including "City Lake Rd" and a reviewer mentioning moving "to the other side of the lake," suggests that the campground's environment includes a water feature, which can enhance its scenic appeal and offer potential recreational opportunities, although these are not detailed in the reviews.
Based on the limited information and the concerns raised in the reviews, it's challenging to provide a comprehensive list of services typically expected at a campground. However, based on the issues highlighted, local users should specifically inquire about:
- Availability and type of hookups at campsites (specifically water, electricity, and sewer).
- The location and availability of a dump station for RVs.
- The cleanliness of restrooms and other facilities.
- The campground's policies regarding noise levels and quiet hours.
- The process for reservations and the measures taken to ensure accuracy.
- The level of interaction and potential issues with permanent residents.
- The availability and nature of any recreational amenities (e.g., playground, swimming area in the lake, if applicable).
The phone numbers provided, (217) 532-5211 and +1 217-532-5211, are the primary means of contacting Sherwood Forest Campground for inquiries and reservations. Local users are strongly encouraged to call and ask detailed questions based on the concerns raised in the reviews to determine if this campground meets their expectations.
Given the absence of any positive remarks about specific features beyond the shaded lots and the presence of a lake, it's difficult to highlight particular strengths of Sherwood Forest Campground based solely on these reviews. The potential for a lakeside setting could be attractive, but the negative feedback regarding the atmosphere, cleanliness, and reservation handling warrants careful consideration.
No promotional information is available in the provided reviews. Local users should inquire directly with the campground management about any potential discounts, special offers, or seasonal rates that might be available.
In conclusion, Sherwood Forest Campground near Hillsboro, IL, presents a mixed picture based on recent camper reviews. While the grounds are noted as nice and many lots are shaded, potential drawbacks include concerns about cleanliness, the lack of sewer hookups, issues with reservation handling, a possibly unwelcoming atmosphere due to the presence of permanent residents and their interactions with seasonal campers, and potential noise issues. For local users seeking "camping near me," it is strongly recommended to contact Sherwood Forest Campground directly using the provided phone numbers to ask detailed questions and to weigh these potential drawbacks against the convenience of its location before making a reservation.

Apr 14, 2024 · M BuThe grounds are nice, but there are no sewer hook ups. The bathrooms are fairly clean. They take reservations which the spot I had reserved was given to another camper. I awoke almost ever morning to the sound of a bobcat backup alarm that went on for the better part of the day. Until I moved to the other side of the lake away from the main grounds was I happy. The photo on Google was my first spot and was happy there until I had to move due to a reservation. Most lots are shaded and altered are lots of permanent live in people there.
Jun 13, 2016 · kyle hilgemeierFirst time camping here and it was a joy!! We were in A31 with our 42ft 5th wheel camper. The hosts were a lot of fun and helpful. The dogs had a good time as well. Went fishing on both lakes, and we caught a few fish. Great experience and can't wait to come back to visit.
Aug 21, 2022 · Jasmine MoranMy kids stayed there over a weekend with their friends. Both times my vehicle was out there (once myself once my friend in my car) resident campers screamed cuss words at us saying to slow down (we were going under 10 both times) When I called the campground to complain the owners were very rude and disrespectful claiming they saw me speeding and that I almost hit someone. Mind you they didn’t know the make or model of my vehicle. Very displeased and my children will not be camping there again.
Apr 14, 2024 · Olivia CooperGreat stay. Wish we had more time to enjoy the area. Wonderful Campground with easy pull through for us. Back in sites seemed very doable. Would have given a 5 star if we used the available potable water or dump. Electric was awesome in the 90deg plus heat.
