Situated at 9890 Imac Ave, Sparta, WI 54656, USA, this campground provides an accessible outdoor escape for local residents and travelers alike.
For those eager to connect with nature without venturing too far from civilization, Sparta DNR Campground presents a wooded environment that invites relaxation. Imagine setting up your tent or parking your RV amidst the trees, enjoying the tranquility of the outdoors. While some campsites may experience wet ground, particularly in wetter seasons like late May according to recent visitor feedback, others boast sandier and drier conditions, offering a variety of ground options to suit your needs. It's always a good idea to check recent conditions or inquire when booking to secure a site that best fits your preferences.
Sparta DNR Campground provides essential services to ensure a comfortable camping experience. You'll find water fountains available on-site, although it's worth noting that during peak or off-peak seasons, the availability of all amenities might vary. Recent reports indicate that at least one water fountain was operational in late May. For restroom facilities, the campground offers vault-style bathrooms, a standard amenity in many state-managed campgrounds. Each campsite is also equipped with a picnic table, providing a dedicated space for meals, games, and simply enjoying the company of your fellow campers.
One of the key features of Sparta DNR Campground is its accessibility. Located very close to the interstate highway, it offers a convenient stopover for those on longer journeys or a quick weekend getaway for locals. While the proximity to the I-90 might suggest a noisy environment, past visitors have noted that it remains "quiet enough to camp," suggesting a reasonable buffer that allows for a peaceful night's sleep. However, for particularly light sleepers, bringing earplugs might be a prudent measure to ensure undisturbed rest.
For those interested in exploring the local area, Sparta DNR Campground's location offers potential access to recreational trails. One reviewer mentioned the "Omaha trail out of Camp Douglas to Elroy then to Sparta" as a route to the campground, hinting at the possibility of nearby hiking or biking opportunities. Furthermore, the campground's proximity to the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, though perhaps requiring a short drive, is a significant draw for cycling enthusiasts. This renowned trail offers a unique experience, passing through several historic railroad tunnels and over scenic countryside.
Planning your stay at Sparta DNR Campground is straightforward. Online registration for a campsite is available, offering convenience in securing your spot. The pricing structure, as mentioned by a recent camper, includes a $15 fee per site plus a $7.95 service charge. For groups, this total cost might be quite reasonable when shared. However, solo travelers might find the added service fee makes it a bit pricier compared to the base site cost. It's advisable to consider the total cost based on your group size when making your booking decision.
While the primary focus of any camping trip is the natural environment and outdoor activities, it's always helpful to know what to expect in terms of fellow campers. One visitor humorously mentioned finding "beverages left behind by other campers," though they wisely chose not to partake. This anecdote serves as a gentle reminder to always be mindful of your belongings and to practice responsible camping etiquette, ensuring a pleasant experience for everyone.
For those seeking an alternative camping experience in the vicinity, the reviewer suggested that "Elroy walk in would be a better option if route allows." This implies that there might be other types of campsites or perhaps more secluded options available nearby, possibly catering to different preferences or travel styles. Exploring these alternatives could be worthwhile if you're looking for a specific type of camping experience that Sparta DNR Campground might not fully offer.
In summary, Sparta DNR Campground provides a conveniently located and relatively affordable camping option near Sparta, Wisconsin. Its wooded setting offers a natural retreat, while essential amenities like water fountains, vault toilets, and picnic tables cater to basic camping needs. Its proximity to the interstate makes it easily accessible, although light sleepers might consider bringing earplugs. The potential access to nearby trails like the Omaha Trail and the renowned Elroy-Sparta State Trail adds to its appeal for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you're a local looking for a quick escape or a traveler passing through, Sparta DNR Campground offers a practical base for your outdoor adventures. Remember to book online and consider the total cost, especially if you are camping solo. Embrace the opportunity to enjoy the Wisconsin outdoors at Sparta DNR Campground.

Sparta DNR Campground Reviews
Very close to the interstate highway, but still quiet enough to camp. One of two water fountains was working in late May. Wet ground in some sites but others were sandier and drier.
May 26, 2023 · Greg KruegerRoad to campground using Omaha trail out of Camp Douglas to Elroy then to Sparta. You can register for site on line $15 for site and a $7.95 service, if you have a group not a bad price, running solo bit pricey, but there is water and vault style bathroom along with picnic table. Wooded campground, other than it backs up to interstate - bring ear plugs for 💤😴. Elroy walk in would be better option if route allows. Did find some beverages left behind by other campers, didn't partake though.😆
Aug 14, 2023 · Johnny SommersI didn't stay at the campground this time and the last time I did was 18 years ago, but it was nice then and I'm sure it still is. The real feature is the bike trail and the tunnels that you get to go through. If you like biking then put this on your destination list because it is incredible.
Jun 08, 2019 · Bert JonesClean campground but A lot of highway noise. The water that was available was brown & Our fire ring was also unfortunately pretty full.
Sep 04, 2022 · Kristina MahaffeyThe camp sites were overgrown and had very little room inside of the forest. The water fountain did not work, but was slowly leaking into a clogged drain. You could, however get water from the spigot. The men’s washroom, on a Sunday night and Monday morning, was bring your own toilet paper. There was loud road noise from the highway.
