We stayed here during summer 2023. We were lucky to get a spot for a few nights. The sites were great and it was nice to be near the lake. It was peaceful even though it was busy and most campers were respectful of quiet hours. We ended up driving to the day use area to access the beach there since it was a little nicer than the area in front of the campground. The showers could use more attention, they were pretty dirty and the water didn't get very warm. It was strange that you couldn't get in and out after 10pm. Not that we needed to be out late but just wonder about having an emergency and not being able to get back into your campsite. They also aerial sprayed for mosquitos while we were staying there which was a little concerning and I didn't appreciate having chemicals sprayed over top of us. Bear Lake is beautiful and interesting and if you want to stay right on the lake this is a great option. - Tara Crosby

Big Creek Campground Introduce

For those seeking "camping near me" near the stunning Bear Lake in Laketown, Utah, Big Creek Campground, located on Big Creek Campground Rd, Laketown, UT 84038, USA, presents itself as a lakeside option. Based on recent camper reviews, this campground offers appealing features like proximity to the lake and shaded campsites but also comes with some significant drawbacks that potential visitors should carefully consider.

One of the primary advantages of Big Creek Campground, as highlighted by multiple reviewers, is its location right on Bear Lake. Campers appreciated being "near the lake" and having "outstanding" beach access, with one reviewer noting it was just a "90-second walk" to the water from their campsite. For those prioritizing immediate access to the lake for swimming, sunbathing, and other water activities, Big Creek Campground's location is a definite plus. However, one camper mentioned that the day-use area beach was "a little nicer" than the area directly in front of the campground, suggesting that the immediate beachfront might have some limitations or be less desirable.

The campsites themselves received generally positive feedback. One reviewer described them as "great" and "decent," noting that they come equipped with "trailer hook ups, camp fire and a table." The presence of "trees provide shade" was also appreciated, helping to mitigate the summer heat. This suggests that the physical campsites offer basic amenities and some comfort, particularly regarding shade.

Despite the appealing location and decent campsites, several significant issues were raised by campers. A recurring and prominent concern was the overwhelming presence of mosquitoes. One reviewer exclaimed, "Oh man. Millions," and advised bringing "plenty of bug spray," even then warning that campers would "probably get eaten alive." Another reviewer mentioned that the campground conducted aerial spraying for mosquitoes during their stay, which they found "a little concerning" due to the chemicals being sprayed overhead. This severe mosquito problem is a major factor that potential visitors should be prepared for, especially during the warmer months.

Another significant drawback highlighted in the reviews was the condition of the restrooms and showers. One camper described the showers as needing "more attention," noting they were "pretty dirty" and the water "didn't get very warm." Another reviewer elaborated, calling the restrooms and showers "ROUGH," not just dirty but "filled with dead and living mosquitos and spiders." This suggests a lack of adequate maintenance and cleanliness in these essential facilities, which could significantly impact the comfort and hygiene of the camping experience.

One unusual and potentially restrictive rule mentioned was that campers "couldn't get in and out after 10 pm." The reviewer who noted this found it "strange," especially considering potential emergencies. This limited access could be inconvenient for campers who might need to leave or return to their campsite after the designated hour.

Financial aspects also drew criticism. One reviewer mentioned being charged an "additional $10 for an extra vehicle despite being on two motorcycles that easily fit into one regular parking spot," labeling it a "cash grab." This suggests that the campground might have strict and potentially costly policies regarding extra vehicles, even if they don't occupy additional space.

Regarding staff presence and helpfulness, one reviewer noted that there wasn't "much staff around" but mentioned that "some older folks who are volunteers" were helpful. This implies that while official staff might be limited, there are some individuals willing to assist campers.

Overall, the reviews present a mixed picture of Big Creek Campground. Its prime location right on Bear Lake with easy beach access and shaded campsites are significant positives. However, the severe mosquito problem, the poor condition of the restrooms and showers, the restrictive after-hours access, and the extra vehicle charges are substantial drawbacks that could detract significantly from the camping experience. One reviewer stated they would only stay again if "overruled," indicating a strong negative impression despite the lake proximity.

To obtain the most current information and potentially address some of the concerns raised in the reviews, it is advisable to contact Big Creek Campground directly at (435) 946-3343 or +1 435-946-3343. When you call, consider asking about:

  • **Mosquito Control Measures:** Inquire about their current strategies for managing the mosquito population beyond aerial spraying.
  • **Restroom and Shower Maintenance:** Ask if there have been any recent improvements or increased cleaning schedules for these facilities.
  • **After-Hours Access Policy:** Clarify the rules regarding entry and exit after 10 pm and if there are exceptions for emergencies.
  • **Extra Vehicle Fees:** Understand their policy on extra vehicles and if there are any exceptions for motorcycles or smaller vehicles that share a parking space.
  • **Campsite Availability and Amenities:** Confirm the types of campsites available, hookup details, and any specific features of individual sites.
  • **Beach Access:** Get more details about the beach area directly in front of the campground compared to the day-use area.
  • **Fees and Reservations:** Inquire about current camping rates, any park entrance fees, and their reservation procedures.
  • **Promotional Offers:** Ask if they have any special deals or discounts available for the current season or for local residents.

In conclusion, Big Creek Campground offers the undeniable appeal of camping right on Bear Lake with easy beach access and shaded campsites. However, potential visitors searching for "camping near me" must be aware of the significant issues raised in recent reviews, particularly the severe mosquito problem and the subpar condition of the restrooms and showers. The restrictive after-hours access and extra vehicle fees are also important considerations. While the location is a major draw, it is crucial to weigh these drawbacks and seek updated information from the campground directly before making a reservation.
