Environment and Location:
Cave Campground boasts a stunning natural environment. Its location directly on Hat Creek provides campers with immediate access to the waterway, renowned for its trout fishing. The reviews highlight the picturesque nature of each campsite, suggesting a thoughtfully laid-out campground that maximizes the scenic beauty of the area. The proximity to Lava Cave, described as a short walk across the way, adds a unique geological attraction for visitors to explore, differentiating it from many standard "camping near me" locations.
The presence of chipmunks, accustomed to human visitors, adds a touch of wildlife interaction to the camping experience. While generally enjoyable, campers should be mindful of these curious creatures and secure their food and belongings to prevent unwanted encounters inside vehicles or trailers.
Services and Amenities:
Cave Campground is commended for its cleanliness and maintenance. The availability of both vault toilets and a bathroom with flush toilets caters to different preferences and needs, indicating a commitment to providing comfortable facilities for campers. The fresh and clean bathrooms are specifically mentioned as a positive aspect, contributing to a pleasant camping experience.
The campground's location near the highway, while providing easy access, also means that campers should expect to hear some traffic noise. However, the campsites closest to Hat Creek are suggested to be more desirable, as the sound of the flowing water may help to mitigate the highway noise, offering a more tranquil setting.
The observation that many travelers stop at the campground to use the restrooms, especially when the nearby rest area is closed, indicates that Cave Campground is a known and accessible facility in the area. While this might lead to increased traffic in and out of the campground, it also suggests that it provides a valuable service to the wider traveling public.
Features and Activities:
One of the standout features of Cave Campground is its prime location for fishing in Hat Creek. Multiple reviewers enthusiastically reported catching trout daily and seeing other campers with full stringers, making it an ideal destination for anglers seeking a "camping near me" experience with excellent fishing opportunities.
The short walk to Lava Cave offers an adventurous and educational activity for campers of all ages. Exploring this geological wonder provides a unique element to a camping trip that goes beyond typical outdoor recreation.
The friendly wildlife, particularly the chipmunks, can be an entertaining aspect of staying at Cave Campground, especially for families with children. However, as noted, it's important to be aware of their presence and take necessary precautions.
Potential Considerations:
The proximity to the highway and the associated traffic noise is a significant consideration for potential visitors. Those particularly sensitive to noise may prefer to request campsites closer to the creek, if available, to help minimize this impact.
The traffic of non-campers using the restroom facilities might be a concern for some, potentially leading to increased activity within the campground. However, this also suggests that the campground is well-maintained and accessible.

Cave Campground Reviews
This is a great Campground! Super clean, nice sites, fresh, clean bathrooms. Every campsite is so picturesque. Right on hat creek too. We caught trout everyday! And the Lava cave is a short walk across the way. We had lots of chipmunks hanging out with us too. They come right up your leg and eat Peanuts in your lap! Lots of fun for outdoor lovers!
Sep 23, 2023 · Shelli RisleyThe camp ground is well maintained and clean. There are vault toilets as well as one bathroom with flush toilets. It is right near the highway so expect to hear traffic. The nicer sites are closest to the creek. I would assume the sound of the creek would drown out the sound of the freeway. The birds and chipmunks are accustomed to visitors. Keep an eye out or they will hop in your vehicle/trailer if you leave the door open too long. Great fishing in the creek. Saw many people coming out with full stringers. A lot of traffic in and out. Many folks stopped to use the restroom as the rest area down the road was already closed for the season. Only rated a 3 due to closeness to the highway and traffic using the restroom.
Oct 17, 2023 · Dana HaleReally like this campground. They allow tents. It's pretty. They have bathrooms and they are cleanish. The road is noisy but not entirely awful. Good fishing and the sound of Hat Creek. Lovely. 3 stars because our campsite had all sorts of dog poop and litter. The barbecue was dirty and the women's bathroom had no lights the first 3 nights of our stay. The camp authority was quick to tell us we couldn't use the electricity in our campsite because it belonged to the camp host. Why the camp host was not camped here is beyond me. Those iPhones really can put a drain on that government bill. They were, however, not so quick enforcing leash rules or the 9:00 PM quiet rule. We were verbally threated by drunk adults and their awful children. The camp host did nothing. They need to identify campsite spots, post rules and take advantage of signage. And put the camp host in his spot. Unless of course, he was in his spot, as the signage implied. I think they were just throwing their "all important " selves around.
Jul 05, 2019 · Cindy VogelI liked this place. A little too close to the 89/44 junction. Traffic is pretty much all we heard... But it was beautiful.
Jun 14, 2019 · Morgan Marie MaciasIt's a popular and handy campground close to Redding. The town of Old Station is close with last minute supplies. A fun cave is just across the highway to explore. And the campground has bathrooms and faucets scattered throughout. The creek is stocked 1-2 times per week, which makes for great fishing for the kids.
