Doble PCT Trail Camp Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts and long-distance hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) searching for "Camping Near Me" in the Big Bear, California area, Doble PCT Trail Camp, located at 38698 Holcomb Valley Rd, Big Bear, CA 92314, USA, offers a specific type of camping experience tailored to trail users. Situated along the renowned PCT, this camp provides a resting point and basic amenities for those traversing this iconic long-distance trail, as well as potentially serving as a short-term stop for local hikers exploring sections of the PCT near Big Bear.
The location along the Pacific Crest Trail near Big Bear places Doble PCT Trail Camp within the mountainous environment of the San Bernardino National Forest. This region is characterized by diverse terrain, including pine forests, rocky landscapes, and varying elevations. Campers and hikers can expect to be immersed in the natural beauty of the Southern California mountains, with opportunities for scenic views and encounters with local flora and fauna. The specific environment around the camp itself might be somewhat rustic and geared towards accommodating the needs of backpackers and hikers.
Based on recent reviews from individuals who appear to have been day hiking sections of the PCT, the services at Doble PCT Trail Camp are quite basic. One reviewer noted the presence of a "nice and comfy" pit toilet, although they did not need to use it. This indicates that sanitation facilities are available, albeit of the primitive pit toilet variety. It's important for users to come prepared with their own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as these are not typically provided at such facilities.
A significant concern raised in the reviews pertains to the availability of water. One hiker specifically sought water while day hiking and, despite having a filtration device, encountered an issue with the water spigot. They reported that the handle was broken and could not be moved, rendering the spigot unusable. Another reviewer referenced the campground's website, which apparently lists water as "seasonal" but does not specify the timeframe for this seasonality. This reviewer deduced that water should be available during the "summer months," which the website reportedly lists as the best time to visit. However, their experience suggests that even during the presumed peak season, the water source might be unreliable due to maintenance issues. These comments highlight the critical need for anyone planning to rely on water at Doble PCT Trail Camp to verify its availability and condition beforehand, and to always carry sufficient water or a reliable filtration/treatment method as a backup.
Despite the potential water issue, one reviewer did note a positive feature: "There's a nice big picnic table here too. Nice for resting." This amenity would be particularly welcome for hikers and campers looking for a place to rest, prepare food, or organize their gear. A picnic table can significantly enhance the comfort and functionality of a trail camp.
Another brief but positive comment was "Lovely trail," presumably referring to the Pacific Crest Trail section accessible from the camp. This underscores the primary draw of Doble PCT Trail Camp: its direct access to a renowned and scenic hiking trail. For local users interested in experiencing a section of the PCT or for thru-hikers needing a rest stop, this camp serves as a convenient point along the trail.
Currently, there is no promotional information available for Doble PCT Trail Camp. As a trail camp primarily serving PCT hikers, it likely operates on a first-come, first-served basis and may not have specific booking procedures or fees for PCT thru-hikers. Local users considering overnight camping at this location should check with the San Bernardino National Forest regulations regarding dispersed camping or any designated sites and permit requirements along the PCT or in the Holcomb Valley area.
Given the information gathered from the reviews, the key features of Doble PCT Trail Camp appear to be its location directly on the Pacific Crest Trail, the presence of a pit toilet, and a picnic table. The environment is the natural mountainous terrain of the San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear. However, potential users must be aware of the reported issues with the water spigot and the seasonal nature of the water availability, as indicated on the website. It is strongly recommended to contact the provided phone numbers, (909) 382-2790 or +1 909-382-2790, to inquire about the current status of the water source and any other relevant conditions or regulations for camping at this trail camp.
In conclusion, Doble PCT Trail Camp offers a convenient and basic stop for those hiking the Pacific Crest Trail near Big Bear. Local users looking for a hiking-centric camping experience with direct PCT access might also find it appealing. The presence of a pit toilet and picnic table provides some basic comfort. However, the unreliable water situation, as highlighted by recent hikers, is a significant factor to consider. Prospective users must take proactive steps to verify water availability and come prepared with alternatives if necessary. By contacting the managing authorities and being aware of the likely primitive nature of a trail camp, local and thru-hikers can make informed decisions about utilizing Doble PCT Trail Camp as part of their outdoor adventures in the Big Bear region.

Doble PCT Trail Camp Reviews
Pit toilet looks nice and comfy. Didn't need to use it. What I did need was water while day hiking a section of the PCT. (And yes, I had a filtration device on hand 😀).It looks like the water spigot needs some maintenance. The handle is broken. I couldn't get it to budge. The website lists water here as seasonal but does not list what season that applies to. The website does list the best season to visit as "summer months", so I thought it a pretty good logical deduction that water would be available during that season.I hope the water spigot gets some attention soon to benefit other weary travelers such as myself.Oh! There's a nice big picnic table here too. Nice for resting.
