Grassy Flat Campground Introduce
For local adventurers seeking "camping near me" in the vicinity of Gasquet, California, Grassy Flat Campground, located at Gasquet, CA 95543, USA, presents a budget-friendly option with access to a beautiful river. With contact phone numbers (707) 457-3131 and +1 707-457-3131, this campground offers a mix of features and considerations that potential visitors should be aware of, as highlighted by recent customer reviews.
According to visitor feedback, Grassy Flat Campground is generally clean and offers a good amount of privacy at some of its sites. For those who value a sense of seclusion while camping, this can be a significant plus. However, it's important to note that the walk-in campsites, specifically mentioned as being numbered 2 through 5 (or a similar range), are reported to be very close to the freeway (Route 199). This proximity results in traffic noise, which may impact the camping experience for those staying in these particular walk-in sites. One reviewer opted to stay at their original reservation of site #18, implying it was situated further from the highway and thus quieter.
Access to the river is a key feature for many campers, and Grassy Flat Campground does offer this. However, the reviews indicate that river access from the campground itself is "a little tricky" and "definitely not handicap accessible." This suggests that the trail leading down to the river may be uneven, steep, or otherwise challenging to navigate. Despite the potentially difficult access from the campground, those who make the trek down have found the water to be beautiful, with a very deep swimming hole that is considered "very worth the little hike." This highlights the reward for those willing and able to navigate the terrain to reach the river.
For those seeking easier river access, or for individuals with mobility challenges, a "day use beach" is located across the bridge from Grassy Flat Campground. This alternative provides a more accessible way to enjoy the beautiful river. The specific river is not named in the reviews, but its appeal for swimming is evident.
Another important environmental factor to consider is the campground's location directly along Route 199. As mentioned earlier, this proximity leads to traffic noise during the day, which may affect the overall tranquility of the camping experience, particularly for those sensitive to such sounds. However, the campsites do offer tree shade, which is a valuable feature, especially during warmer weather, providing relief from the sun and contributing to a more comfortable environment.
In terms of amenities, Grassy Flat Campground provides basic necessities. Vault toilets are available for restroom facilities, and garbage disposal is also provided, which is a convenience for campers. However, it is explicitly stated that there is no water available at the campground. Therefore, campers must bring their own potable water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
The spacing between campsites is described as "a bit close," which means that privacy may be limited at some sites. This is a common trade-off in more budget-friendly campgrounds. However, the earlier mention of "a good amount of privacy" at some sites suggests that the level of privacy may vary depending on the specific location within the campground.
One of the most notable features of Grassy Flat Campground is its affordability, with a reported cost of $10 per night. This makes it a very budget-friendly option for camping in the Gasquet area. For campers looking to minimize expenses, this low nightly rate is a significant advantage.
Interestingly, one of the reviewers provided information about an alternative nearby option: Medona River Access, located across the bridge. This is a free camping area offering three campsites on a first-come, first-served basis with a 7-day limit. Medona River Access also features fire pits, vault toilets, tree shade, and "fantastic access to the river." While also located along the highway (though reportedly "a little quieter" than Grassy Flat), this free option might be appealing to some campers. However, it's noted that rigs over 25 feet may have difficulty accessing this area, and it's recommended to park at the top of the road and walk down to assess the suitability of the sites first.
Considering the information from the reviews, Grassy Flat Campground offers a clean and budget-friendly camping experience with river access, albeit somewhat tricky from the campground itself. The presence of traffic noise due to its location along Route 199 is a factor to consider. The availability of vault toilets and garbage disposal are basic conveniences, but the lack of water requires campers to be self-sufficient in this regard. The tree shade at the campsites is a definite plus. For those willing to navigate the river access or utilize the easier access at the day-use beach across the bridge, the beautiful swimming hole is a significant attraction.
There is no specific "promotional information" provided for Grassy Flat Campground in the reviews. The value proposition seems to be its affordability and location near the river. The comparison to the free camping at Medona River Access offers an alternative for budget-conscious campers willing to forego formal reservations and potentially deal with more limited accessibility for larger RVs.
For local users searching for "camping near me" on a budget and prioritizing river access in the Gasquet area, Grassy Flat Campground is worth considering. The low nightly fee makes it an attractive option. However, potential campers should be prepared for traffic noise, bring their own water, and be aware of the challenging river access from some campsites. The availability of a day-use beach across the bridge provides a more accessible alternative for enjoying the river. Additionally, the nearby free camping at Medona River Access might be an option for those with smaller rigs and a willingness to try for a first-come, first-served site.
In conclusion, Grassy Flat Campground offers a clean and affordable camping option near Gasquet, California, with the significant draw of proximity to a beautiful river. While it has some drawbacks, such as highway noise and tricky river access from the campground itself, the availability of a day-use beach nearby and the budget-friendly nightly rate may appeal to certain campers. Local users seeking a no-frills camping experience focused on enjoying the river should weigh these factors when considering Grassy Flat Campground for their next outdoor adventure. The information about the free camping at Medona River Access provides an additional resource for those exploring "camping near me" in the area.

Grassy Flat Campground Reviews
The campground is clean and has a good amount of privacy. The walk in camps, 2-5 or something like that, we very close to the freeway, so we stayed with our original reservation of #18. River access is a little tricky. It’s definitely not handicap accessible, but there is a day use beach across the bridge. The water is beautiful and it’s a very deep swimming hole, when you get down there! It was very worth the little hike!
Sep 06, 2022 · Laicee VaughnCampground is along Rt 199 so there is traffic noise during the day. It is also a bit of a walk with a downhill trail to the river. Has vault toilets and garbage, no water. Spots are a bit close to each other so privacy is limited. Sites offer tree shade. $10 a night. Go across the bridge to Medona River Access there are 3 free campsites, fire pits, vault toilets, tree shade and fantastic access to the river. These are first come, first serve with a 7 day limit. Again along the highway but a little quieter. Rigs over 25' may have an issue with the free area. I suggest parking at the top of the road and walk down to scope out the area first.
Jun 15, 2019 · Spirit BakerGreat campground. We had reservations for site 14. The web site started that this site could accommodate a 30 foot camper, but it was not possible to fit a 30 camper in here due to low limbs, narrow road and obstacles on the road that prevented one from making the maneuvers necessary to back in. We had to give up and we found a place nearby that had dispersed camping (see pictures). This campground is nice, but it should be limited to tents and small campers . Not big rig friendly. No host available to help us.
Jun 25, 2021 · Kenneth DavisNot the best campground we’ve stayed at but definitely good enough!Had a nice access to the smith river (which is incredibly beautiful!!) 2 mins walking distance from our camp site.Bathrooms were clean.Don’t forget your mosquito repellent tho!! They’re everywhere there.
Jun 05, 2021 · Sara BakiriSuch a cool place. Nice spot to park, short walk to the water down a steep hill, but do able. Water was not moving to fast and was perfect temp. Sheer cliffs to look at and the wonderful water.
