Great River Campground Introduce
For those in the Winona, Minnesota area seeking "camping near me," Great River Campground, located at Campground Rd, Winona, MN 55987, USA, offers a promising retreat nestled near the bluffs of the Mississippi River. This smaller, state-managed campground provides a unique environment with convenient access to natural beauty and recreational opportunities. While specific contact information like a phone number isn't provided in the reviews, its location suggests it's a readily accessible option for local residents looking to escape into nature.
The environment of Great River Campground is a key highlight, as praised by recent visitors. The campground is situated just off the bluffs, offering potential for scenic views and a sense of being immersed in the natural landscape. The campsites themselves are described as fairly spread out, providing a degree of privacy that enhances the camping experience. They are also noted to be flat, well-graveled, and shaded, contributing to comfort and ease of setup. The presence of mature trees providing shade is particularly appealing during warmer months. The overall atmosphere is reported to be typically quiet, suggesting a peaceful and relaxing environment ideal for those looking to unwind away from the noise of urban life.
In terms of services, Great River Campground offers essential amenities for a comfortable stay. The availability of clean showers with plenty of warm water is a significant positive, especially for those who enjoy hiking or other outdoor activities. The positive mention of "nice trails" directly accessible from the campground is a major feature, indicating opportunities for hiking and exploring the bluff country. These trails reportedly lead to scenic overlooks, providing rewarding views of the surrounding area. The staff is also described as nice, contributing to a positive overall experience.
As a state campground, there are some specific features and considerations to be aware of. One reviewer noted that being a state campground means it can be "pricey," and that both Minnesota and Wisconsin (presumably for reciprocity, though the campground is in Minnesota) charge an extra fee for additional vehicles beyond the campsite fee. It's important to note that state park passes, including access (disabled), senior, or military passes, are reportedly not honored at this location. This is a crucial piece of information for potential visitors who may rely on such passes at other campgrounds. The reviews also explicitly mention the absence of water for swimming or fishing directly at the campground, which is an important consideration for those seeking water-based recreational activities on-site.
The primary feature of Great River Campground appears to be its natural setting and access to hiking trails with scenic overlooks. The quiet atmosphere and relatively private, well-maintained campsites also contribute to its appeal. The proximity to the bluffs offers a unique camping experience different from campgrounds situated on flat terrain or directly on a lake. For local users interested in exploring the bluff country and enjoying peaceful walks with rewarding views, this campground seems like a strong option. The well-graveled and flat sites are particularly beneficial for both tent and potentially smaller RV campers, ensuring easier setup and stability.
Promotional information is not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews. However, as a state-managed campground, any potential discounts or special rates would likely be available through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or the specific park's website, if one exists. Local residents might want to check the DNR website for information on seasonal rates, multi-night discounts, or any potential promotions that could apply. It's also possible that there are occasional special events or programs offered at the campground or within the state park system that could enhance a camping trip. Given the proximity to Winona, local tourism websites or the Winona area visitor center might also have information about potential packages or deals that include camping at Great River Campground and other local attractions.
In conclusion, Great River Campground near Winona, MN, offers a pleasant and relatively quiet camping experience in a scenic bluff-side setting. Its well-maintained and private campsites, coupled with direct access to hiking trails and overlooks, make it an attractive option for local users seeking "camping near me" with opportunities for outdoor exploration. While it's important to be aware of the state campground fee structure and the lack of on-site swimming or fishing, the clean facilities and friendly staff contribute to a positive stay. For those who appreciate a natural environment with hiking opportunities, Great River Campground is a local gem worth considering. Be sure to check the Minnesota DNR website for any information regarding fees, reservations, and potential promotions to plan your visit.

Great River Campground Reviews
Pretty nice for a smaller campground and park. The sites are fairly spread out, flat, well graveled and shaded. Most of the sites are fairly private and you are just off the bluffs. There are trails right off the campground that lead to nice overlooks right off the campground. This place lools like it usually pretty quiet.
Sep 21, 2023 · Wyatt W. PenkeGood first.Showers were clean with plenty of warm water. Nice trails, sites and staff. Accessible from the main road yet far enough to not hear traffic. Now BadIt's a state campground so it's pricey. Both MN and WI charge an extra fee for cars over and about the campsite fee. No passes are honored. Not even the access (disabled), senior or military. I didn't see any water... swimming, fishing...
Sep 26, 2023 · Mary ChentisAbsolutely stunning place to hang out and camp. The facilities are well-kept. I would recommend reservations.
Feb 10, 2024 · Liz DeHaanReally spacious, beautiful campsites. We had two 6 person tents set up with plenty of room to spare and move around. Hiking trails are really nice and well groomed. Fire pits are clean and come with a grill grate on a pivot, at least our site has them. Bring big spray, and lots of it. Kwik trip nearby for forgotten items. Great place overall!
Jul 22, 2018 · Benjamin ChristianWithout power people tend to run their generators... try to get the walk-in sites if you want peace and quiet. There is also some slight Highway noise from us-61 down below the Eastern Bluff (loved the sounds of the trains late at night). And I-90 to the South also has faint air brake truck noise noticeable especially late at night. The Bluffs overlooking the Mississippi and the Kerns Valley to the South are stunning. The photo of the tow and barges was taken at the locks in Trempealeau, Wi with Queens' Bluff (located in Great river Bluffs State Park) centered over the barges .. Ironically , after getting to the campground ,while hiking I just happened to photograph the same barge as It passed the East overlook of GR Campground !!
