Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground

St Augustine Beach, FL 32086, USA

3.0
There is no water access in this park that i could find and definitely no place to launch boat or kayak. There's places to launch 20 min away. The road in is narrow but very well kept. Be sure to follow the camping signs if you're taller than an SUV. Goggle sends you a way with low hanging branches. The campground was very nice and quite secluded. Theres a wheelchair accessible Porta-potty that was clean and had pleanty of tp. There was non potable water there as well. We enjoyed biking on the roads and forest trails. - Laura Boettcher

Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground Introduce

For local residents and travelers searching for "camping near me" near St. Augustine Beach, Florida, Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground, located at an address indicating proximity to St Augustine Beach, FL 32086, USA, offers a potentially secluded camping experience within the Matanzas State Forest. You can contact them at (904) 797-5073 or +1 904-797-5073 for information. However, based on recent customer reviews, it is crucial for prospective campers to be aware of both the positive aspects of the environment and some significant concerns regarding the campground's management and facilities.

The environment of Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground is described by one reviewer as "very nice and quite secluded." This suggests that the campground offers a sense of peace and privacy, potentially appealing to those looking to escape more crowded camping areas. The road leading into the campground is noted to be narrow but "very well kept," indicating that access is manageable for vehicles, although caution is advised for taller vehicles beyond the size of an SUV due to potentially low-hanging branches if navigation relies solely on GPS. The campground is situated within the Matanzas State Forest, which likely offers a natural setting with trees and forest trails suitable for outdoor activities. One reviewer mentioned enjoying "biking on the roads and forest trails," indicating that the area is conducive to cycling. However, it's important to note that one reviewer explicitly stated, "There is no water access in this park that i could find and definitely no place to launch boat or kayak," clarifying that direct access to water for recreational purposes within the campground itself is not available, although launching points are reportedly about 20 minutes away.

In terms of services and features, the information from the reviews is somewhat limited and includes both positive and negative aspects. A wheelchair-accessible Porta-Potty is mentioned, which was described as "clean and had plenty of tp," indicating some attention to basic sanitation. Non-potable water was also available at the campground. It is explicitly stated that the campground is a "tent only site," so RV camping is not an option here. The lack of direct water access for boating or kayaking is a significant point to consider for those seeking such activities as part of their "camping near me" experience. The reviews do not mention standard amenities like picnic tables or fire rings at individual campsites, so campers should likely inquire about these if they are essential.

However, a major concern raised in a detailed review involves significant issues with campground management and security. One reviewer recounted a troubling experience of arriving at their reserved and paid campsite to find a family of squatters with a child and dog living there, along with a large boat on a trailer, despite it being a tent-only site. The reviewer indicated that it was clear the squatters had been there for some time and had even attempted to obscure the site marker. Attempts to resolve the issue by contacting Reserve America (the third-party booking service) and the state park on a weekend were unsuccessful. Reserve America reportedly stated they could not intervene, and the state park office was unreachable due to limited weekend staffing. The reviewer claimed that "there is only one ranger in the whole county and he only works during the week 9-5," and that the gate to the campground was never locked, implying a lack of on-site management or security presence, especially outside of weekday hours. This lack of management resulted in the reviewer being unable to occupy their reserved campsite and subsequently facing difficulties in obtaining a refund from Reserve America.

The negative experience described in the second review raises serious concerns about the reliability and management of Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground. The apparent lack of weekend staffing, the unsecure gate, and the inability of the booking service to resolve issues on-site paint a concerning picture for potential campers. The fact that squatters could occupy a reserved campsite without immediate intervention suggests a significant lapse in management and oversight. For local users searching for "camping near me," these issues regarding security and the enforcement of reservations are critical factors to consider before choosing this campground.

Given the serious management concerns highlighted in the reviews, it is difficult to offer positive promotional information without qualification. While the secluded environment and the availability of biking trails might appeal to some, the potential for encountering unmanaged situations and the difficulty in resolving issues, especially on weekends, are significant deterrents. Any promotional efforts would need to address these concerns transparently and assure potential visitors that measures have been taken to improve management and security. Until such assurances can be made based on updated information, it would be irresponsible to promote this campground without emphasizing the risks highlighted by recent experiences.

For local users considering Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground as part of their "camping near me" search, it is strongly recommended to contact the state park directly during weekday hours to inquire about the current management situation, security protocols, and the process for ensuring campsite reservations are honored. It would also be prudent to ask about the availability of amenities such as picnic tables and fire rings, and to confirm the details regarding water access (or lack thereof) within the campground. Given the negative experience reported, having a "back up plan," as suggested by one reviewer, seems like a wise precaution if you choose to book a site here.

In conclusion, while Matanzas State Forest Cedar Creek Campground near St. Augustine Beach may offer a secluded environment and opportunities for biking within the forest, potential campers must be aware of significant concerns regarding campground management and security, as highlighted by recent customer reviews. The lack of direct water access for boating or kayaking and the availability of only non-potable water are also important factors to consider. The serious incident involving squatters occupying a reserved campsite and the reported lack of weekend management raise red flags about the reliability of reservations and the overall safety and security of the campground. Local users searching for "camping near me" are advised to proceed with extreme caution, to thoroughly investigate the current conditions and management practices by contacting the state park directly, and to have alternative camping plans in case of unforeseen issues.
