Mustang Ridge Campground Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" in the picturesque Dutch John, Utah area, Mustang Ridge Campground, located on Mustang Ridge Campground Rd, Dutch John, UT 84023, USA, presents a camping option with both notable advantages and significant current limitations. Situated in a region renowned for its natural beauty, including proximity to Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, this campground offers a potentially appealing environment. However, recent reviews highlight critical issues that prospective campers must be aware of before making a reservation.
One of the frequently praised aspects of Mustang Ridge Campground is its setting. Reviewers consistently describe the "surrounding area" as "absolutely stunning." This suggests that campers can expect to be immersed in the natural beauty of Utah, with opportunities for scenic views, wildlife encounters, and access to the outdoor recreational activities that the Dutch John area is known for, such as boating, fishing, and hiking in the Flaming Gorge region.
Another positive feature mentioned is the layout of the campsites. Guests have noted that the sites are "somewhat spread out," providing a greater sense of privacy and space compared to campgrounds where sites are tightly packed together. This separation allows campers to enjoy a more secluded experience and reduces the feeling of being "on top of other campers," which is often a desirable aspect of a wilderness camping experience.
The availability of "lots of bathrooms" is also cited as a benefit. While the cleanliness and proximity of these bathrooms to individual campsites were points of contention in one review, the sheer number of facilities suggests that access to restrooms is generally convenient throughout the campground, which can be a significant advantage, especially for families or larger groups.
Furthermore, Mustang Ridge Campground's location offers convenient access to key attractions in the area. It is noted to be "close to the visitor center and other hikes," making it a practical basecamp for exploring the natural and informational resources of the region. Proximity to a visitor center can be beneficial for obtaining maps, learning about the local flora and fauna, and getting recommendations for activities. Easy access to hiking trails directly from or near the campground enhances the appeal for those looking to explore the stunning landscapes on foot.
However, despite these positive attributes, significant drawbacks currently exist at Mustang Ridge Campground that potential visitors must consider. The most critical issue, highlighted by multiple reviewers, is the complete lack of running water. According to recent feedback, "the pipes are being fixed for water so currently the water doesn't work (for showers or to refill any containers)." One reviewer explicitly stated that "They had a pipe burst over a month ago. NO RUNNING WATER." This absence of running water severely impacts basic camping needs such as showering, washing dishes, and refilling water containers, making for a significantly less comfortable and potentially challenging camping experience.
In addition to the lack of running water, one reviewer noted that "The bathrooms weren't super close to our campsite," which could be inconvenient depending on the location of one's assigned site. The same reviewer also reported that "The bathrooms were dirty," which is a significant concern for hygiene and overall comfort.
Another critical piece of information, particularly relevant for those with larger RVs, comes from a camper with a 45’ 5th wheel trailer. They strongly advise anyone with a 5th wheel over 35’ "DO NOT book a camp site here." Despite the website allowing selection of sites up to 60’, this reviewer found that "none of the spots have a straight shot at 60’," and that "most larger spots are on a radius and were probably measured using the larger/outer circumference of the spot." This misinformation on the booking website led to a difficult and potentially damaging experience for those with large trailers trying to navigate the campground's layout.
The host reportedly confirmed the difficulty of accommodating large 5th wheels in National Park campgrounds in general, despite what online booking systems might indicate. This discrepancy between online information and the reality on the ground is a significant issue that potential campers need to be aware of to avoid disappointment and logistical challenges.
Given these significant issues, particularly the lack of running water and the challenges for large RVs, the overall experience at Mustang Ridge Campground appears to be compromised at present. While the natural beauty of the area and the spacious campsites remain attractions, the fundamental need for water and the limitations for larger vehicles are major deterrents.
One reviewer, despite acknowledging the positive aspects, concluded that they "most likely wouldn't come back" due to the negative experiences. Another reviewer gave a "1 star for the lack of misinformation" regarding the availability of water and the suitability for large RVs, further emphasizing the severity of these issues.
For local users seeking a more reliable camping experience in the Dutch John area, one reviewer offered a direct alternative: "Better option is the Dutch John RV park just 10 minutes away." This suggests that there are other campgrounds in the vicinity that may offer more reliable amenities and better suitability for a wider range of camping setups.
Considering the current situation at Mustang Ridge Campground, local users searching for "camping near me" should be aware of the following:
- No Running Water: Currently, the campground lacks running water due to ongoing pipe repairs, affecting showers and the ability to refill water containers.
- Bathroom Issues: While there are many bathrooms, cleanliness and proximity to campsites may vary.
- Limited Accessibility for Large RVs: Campers with 5th wheel trailers over 35’ are strongly advised against booking here due to site constraints, despite online booking options suggesting otherwise.
- Stunning Location: The campground is situated in a beautiful area near Flaming Gorge, offering scenic views and access to outdoor activities.
- Spacious Campsites: Sites are generally spread out, providing a degree of privacy.
- Proximity to Attractions: Close to the visitor center and hiking trails.
Given the temporary but significant issue of no running water, and the permanent limitation for large RVs, local users should carefully weigh these factors against the appeal of the location and spacious sites. It is strongly recommended to contact the provided phone number, (877) 444-6777 or +1 877-444-6777, to inquire about the current status of the water situation and to get accurate information regarding campsite suitability for different types of camping setups before making a reservation. Additionally, exploring alternative campgrounds in the Dutch John area, such as the Dutch John RV Park mentioned in a review, might be a prudent step to ensure a more comfortable and hassle-free camping experience.
As no promotional information was provided, local users should inquire directly about any current specials or discounts when contacting the campground. It is crucial to get the most up-to-date information on the water situation and site suitability to make an informed decision about camping at Mustang Ridge Campground.

Mustang Ridge Campground Reviews
Good:- We had a great campsite. They are somewhat spread out so you aren't on top of other campers.- The surrounding area is absolutely stunning.- Lots of bathrooms.- Close to the visitor center and other hikes.Bad:- The pipes are being fixed for water so currently the water doesn't work (for showers or to refill any containers).- The bathrooms weren't super close to our campsite.- The bathrooms were dirty. We camped with an a-frame camper so we were able to get around fine. We enjoyed our time here, but most likely wouldn't come back.
Jun 14, 2024 · Lauren Robinson2 items:1. For ANYONE booking here and under the assumption they have running water, they Don’t. They had a pipe burst over a month ago. NO RUNNING WATER.2. For anyone with a 5th wheel trailer over 35’, DO NOT book a camp site here. For reference, I have a 45’ 5th wheel with a F350 SRW CC LB. The website will allow you to select 60’, but none of the spots have a straight shot at 60’. Most larger spots are on a radius and were probably measured using the larger/outer circumference of the spot. I have towed all sorts of trailers for 30+ years.Upon speaking to the Host, he let us know that none of the National Parks are big enough for a 5th wheel, contrary to what the website allows. The host was a nice fella and sounded frustrated as well.1 star for the lack of misinformation.Better option is the Dutch John RV park just 10 minutes away.
Jun 13, 2024 · J M LStayed here many times over the decades. Great view of lake and dam from the lakeside sites( or a short walk from rest of campground) . Has showers and a boat ramp. The manager warned us of people stealing your ticket from your campsite designation post to get you kicked out so they can take your campsite if its better than theirs, also some fishing guides will do it also to get premium sites for their clients. So make friends with the management so they know you and where and how long your staying. Other than that its a great place
Jul 31, 2022 · Joe Anton (GonethePlaid)This place is beautiful and I love that it's close to the water. The campgrounds are clean and well maintained. The down side is there are a lot of people and they only have one flush toilet bathroom/showers serving tons of camp sites. They have other vault and pit toilets which work but aren't as nice and clean. Management seemed nice to me. Loved all the greenery and trees as that we could walk to the water. Overall we really enjoyed our stay here!
Aug 05, 2018 · Nina Michelle KitchenMustang Ridge has great campgrounds and is really close to a great beach. They had nice campsites and plenty of parking for multiple cars and a boat. The bathrooms were the only real downside with tons of flies which seems like a problem that could be improved with fly paper or some other solution.A great price, and showers are available!
