Potosi Campground and Picnic Area

Harrison, MT 59735, USA

4.0
Patosi is a wonderful place to camp with the two campgrounds divided by South Willow Creek. I’ve camped there for many years and it does not disappoint. With very nice camp sites, fire rings, pump well water and plenty of pit toilets. Trails and hiking, plus the hot springs. The hot springs are over a mile easy hike and seats 6 people easy. Not overly warm so don’t expect hot tub temperatures. - Santiago

Located in Harrison, MT 59735, USA, and reachable at (406) 683-3900 or +1 406-683-3900, Potosi Campground has been a beloved camping spot for many years, consistently providing a satisfying outdoor experience. The campground is uniquely situated, divided by the picturesque South Willow Creek, creating two distinct camping areas for visitors to choose from.

The environment at Potosi Campground is characterized by its natural beauty and the presence of South Willow Creek, which not only adds to the scenic appeal but also likely provides a soothing ambiance. The campsites themselves are described as "very nice," suggesting they are well-maintained and offer a comfortable base for your camping adventure. Each campsite is equipped with essential features for a traditional camping experience, including fire rings for campfires and cooking, and access to pump well water, providing a rustic and authentic outdoor feel. For restroom facilities, Potosi Campground offers plenty of pit toilets, which are common in more natural and less developed camping areas.

A significant feature of Potosi Campground is its access to recreational activities beyond just camping. The area boasts trails suitable for hiking, allowing visitors to explore the surrounding natural landscape. Additionally, one of the major attractions is the nearby Potosi Hot Springs. According to visitor reviews, the hot springs are located about a mile away from the campground, making for an easy hike. The springs themselves can comfortably seat around six people. It's important to note that the water temperature is described as not overly warm, so visitors should not expect hot tub-like heat. However, the opportunity to soak in natural warm water after a hike is a unique and appealing feature.

For those planning a visit, it's crucial to be aware that Potosi Campground does not offer internet access. Therefore, it is advisable to download any necessary maps and information prior to your arrival to ensure you can navigate the area effectively. One reviewer also mentioned that the road leading to the campground can be quite rough for cars, so those with lower-clearance vehicles should exercise caution. However, the rewarding experience of camping in this wonderful place likely outweighs this consideration for many outdoor enthusiasts.

Detailed directions to the Potosi Hot Springs are provided by a recent visitor, offering valuable guidance for those wishing to experience this natural amenity. To reach the hot springs, campers should head to the Cooper family bridge, located southeast of loop 1 within the campground. From the bridge, follow the road to the left until it ends. The trailhead to the hot springs begins at the end of this road. The hot springs are approximately 2000 steps from the bridge, which translates to roughly a mile. Along the way, you will pass an old Mansion about halfway to the springs. A notable landmark is a large rock, about 3 meters tall, on the left side of the trail. From this rock, the hot springs are located about 200 paces further along a trail to the left. The water at the springs is described as warm but not hot.

The availability of firewood is another practical feature mentioned by a camper. While it is plentiful in the area, it requires chopping, offering a more traditional and self-sufficient camping experience for those willing to put in the effort. This abundance of natural resources adds to the rustic charm of Potosi Campground.

While specific promotional information is not included in the reviews, the consistent positive feedback over many years ("I’ve camped there for many years and it does not disappoint") speaks volumes about the enduring appeal of Potosi Campground. The combination of nice campsites, the presence of South Willow Creek, access to hiking trails, and the unique attraction of the nearby hot springs create a compelling offering for local users seeking a natural and recreational camping experience.
