Sims Flat Campground Introduce
For those searching for "camping near me" in the scenic Castella, California region, Sims Flat Campground, located at 26987 Sims Lookout Rd, Castella, CA 96017, USA, offers a "sweet little spot" with a notable riverside setting. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground presents a mix of appealing natural features and a significant drawback related to train noise. Potential visitors should carefully consider these aspects when planning their camping trip.
One reviewer described Sims Flat Campground as a "sweet little spot for overnight camping on a road trip." This suggests that its location might be convenient for travelers passing through the area. The reviewer also noted the presence of "nice views on the historical trail," indicating that the campground provides access to scenic hiking opportunities with historical significance. Additionally, they highlighted "good fishing," implying that the proximity to a river (likely the Sacramento River, given the region) is a significant draw for anglers.
However, the most prominent and consistently mentioned issue in the reviews is the frequent train noise. The first reviewer stated that a "train blows whistle every time it passes, day or night," and explicitly mentioned that this was the primary reason for not giving the campground a higher rating. The second, more detailed review echoed this concern, describing the train activity as disruptive to sleep. This reviewer recounted a specific Saturday night in October with train passages at 11 pm, three trains at 1 am, another at 3 am, two at 5 am, and another at 8 am. They emphasized that it wasn't just the rumbling but the "sounding of the alarm several times as they pass" that made for a "worst night of sleep ever."
Despite the significant noise issue, the second reviewer also noted several positive aspects of Sims Flat Campground. They described it as "so lovely with the sounds of the river," indicating that the riverside location offers a pleasant natural ambiance that might be appealing when the trains are not passing. The campsites are described as "large and with good separation for privacy," which is a desirable feature for many campers seeking a sense of seclusion. The presence of "flush toilets plus a sink" is also a notable amenity, offering a more comfortable experience than basic vault toilets often found in more primitive campgrounds.
The second reviewer also mentioned that Sims Flat Campground is a "great spot for fishermen," corroborating the first reviewer's observation about good fishing. This reinforces the idea that the riverside location is a key feature for those interested in angling. For day visitors who might want to enjoy the area without staying overnight and being subjected to the train noise, there is reportedly "only one picnic table is available for non-campers." This suggests that the campground primarily caters to overnight campers.
Regarding accessibility, the second reviewer noted that they were able to "drive in later in the day and still get a spot" on a Saturday night in October, implying that reservations might not always be necessary, at least during the shoulder season. However, availability could vary depending on the time of year and day of the week.
The first reviewer briefly mentioned "one squatter in the back," which is an unusual observation and could be a one-off incident. However, it might be worth being aware of the potential for non-official occupants in the area.
The second reviewer also commented on road noise, stating that it "wasn't bad despite being only a mile off the road" (they were staying in a camper van with good insulation). This suggests that while the campground is relatively close to a road, the noise from vehicular traffic might be less of a concern compared to the train noise.
To summarize the key aspects of Sims Flat Campground for those searching for "camping near me" in the Castella, California area:
- Riverside Location: Situated alongside a river (likely the Sacramento River), offering a potentially lovely environment and good fishing opportunities.
- Access to Historical Trail: Provides access to a historical trail with nice views.
- Large and Private Campsites: Spaces are reportedly spacious and well-separated, offering a degree of privacy.
- Flush Toilets and Sink: A more comfortable amenity than typical primitive campground facilities.
- Potential for Late Arrival: At least during the shoulder season, it might be possible to find a spot without prior reservation even on a weekend.
However, the significant drawback is:
- Frequent Train Noise: Trains pass by frequently, both day and night, sounding their whistles, which many campers find disruptive to sleep.
Other points to note:
- Limited Day Use Facilities: Only one picnic table is available for non-campers.
- Potential for Squatters: One reviewer noted the presence of a squatter.
- Road Noise: Generally not considered bad, especially for those in well-insulated vehicles.
The provided information does not include details about specific services that might be offered at Sims Flat Campground, such as potable water sources, fire rings, picnic tables (beyond the single day-use table), or waste disposal facilities. The presence of flush toilets suggests that there is some level of infrastructure. To obtain details about these services, as well as any potential fees or reservation policies, it would be best to contact Sims Flat Campground directly at (530) 926-4511 or +1 530-926-4511.

For local users searching for "camping near me" in Castella, California, Sims Flat Campground offers a location with appealing natural features like a riverside setting, good fishing, and access to a historical trail. The campsites are also reported to be spacious and private, with the added convenience of flush toilets. However, the pervasive and disruptive train noise is a major factor that potential visitors must consider. If you are a light sleeper or particularly sensitive to noise, this campground might not be the best choice for an overnight stay. However, if you are a heavy sleeper, primarily interested in fishing or hiking, and are prepared for potential noise interruptions, Sims Flat Campground could still be a viable option.
In conclusion, Sims Flat Campground presents a mixed bag for those seeking "camping near me" in Castella, California. Its lovely riverside environment, good fishing, and spacious campsites are attractive features. However, the significant and frequent train noise, day and night, is a major drawback highlighted by multiple reviewers. Potential campers should weigh these pros and cons carefully and consider contacting the campground directly for more information on amenities and reservation policies before making a decision.

Sims Flat Campground Reviews
Sweet little spot for overnight camping on a road trip. One squatter in the back. Nice views on the historical trail. Good fishing! Train blows whistle every time it passes, day or night; otherwise I’d give it 4 ⭐️.
Aug 20, 2024 · Melissa FlickIt would be such a lovely camp site if it weren't for the trains running all night. Another review said they didn't run that much but it's not true. Seriously, they went by at 11pm, three trains at 1am, another at 3am, two at 5am and another at 8am. And the rumbling wouldn't be so bad but it's the sounding of the alarm several times as they pass. Worst night of sleep ever. Road noise wasn't bad despite being only a mile off the road (to note, we were staying in a camper van with good insulation). . Otherwise, it's so lovely with the sounds of the river. Spaces are large and with good separation for privacy. Flush toilets plus a sink. Great spot for fishermen. Only one picnic table is available for non-campers if you wanted to come for the day and avoid the night trains. We were there on a Saturday night in October. Able to drive in later in the day and still get a spot.
Oct 31, 2022 · Tianna M-RStayed outside the gate as it was closed for winter. CG is not largely developed, but right on the river and beautiful views, needs some maintenance. Bridge over river is a work of CCC art. Super fun history and definitely worth returning to. Nicely positioned a ways from I5, but convenient.
Jan 13, 2024 · Will MaciaExcellent small camp ground near Shasta lake on the American River. Trains from time to time and stunning views. Clean campsites and it was fairly inexpensive.
Apr 18, 2025 · Christopher “CiViLX” RileyNice campground, lots of shades, flush toilets and water spigots. Next to river and a historic walking trail. Be aware of opportunistic bandits!!! We got our chair stolen while I was inside my camper.
