Tanners Flat Campground is situated in Little Cottonwood Canyon, a renowned area in the Wasatch Mountains known for its stunning natural beauty, granite cliffs, and access to outdoor recreation. The campground's location provides an immersive experience in this picturesque environment. One reviewer notes the "easy access off of paved road" and a "paved driveway" within the campground, indicating a level of convenience and good infrastructure, which can be particularly appealing for those new to camping or those with larger vehicles. The presence of "running water" and "toilets" also suggests more modern amenities compared to some more rustic campgrounds, enhancing comfort during your stay.
A significant environmental feature of Tanners Flat Campground is its proximity to the river. Campsites 1-19 are specifically mentioned as being "close to the river," and one reviewer described the river as "rushing in mid June," creating a soothing soundscape that can help campers "go to sleep with the sound of rushing water." This riverfront setting not only offers a tranquil ambiance but also potential opportunities for enjoying the water, although specific activities like fishing or swimming are not detailed in the reviews. The presence of a flowing river often contributes to a cooler microclimate near the campsites, which can be a welcome respite during warmer months.
The layout and design of the campsites at Tanners Flat Campground are also praised. Reviewers note that the campsites are "well spread out and secluded with trees and underbrush." This spacing and natural screening offer a sense of privacy and immersion in nature, allowing campers to feel separated from their neighbors and enjoy a more intimate outdoor experience. For those searching for "camping near me" who value peace and quiet and a sense of being surrounded by nature, the secluded campsites at Tanners Flat are a significant advantage.
A notable policy of Tanners Flat Campground is that "no pets are allowed," which is explicitly mentioned as a "big plus" by one reviewer. This policy can be particularly appealing to campers who prefer a pet-free environment due to allergies or simply a desire for a quieter experience without the potential for noise or other issues associated with pets. For those specifically seeking "camping near me" with a no-pet rule, Tanners Flat Campground meets this preference.
The service provided by the camp hosts receives high praise in both reviews. They are described as "super friendly and helpful" and "so nice!" Positive interactions with campground staff can greatly enhance the overall camping experience, providing assistance, information, and contributing to a welcoming atmosphere. The friendly hosts at Tanners Flat seem to be a significant asset to the campground.
In terms of facilities, while one reviewer mentioned "old" bathrooms, they also emphasized that they were "spotless!" Even the "vault toilets were clean and didn't smell weird," which is a significant compliment for this type of facility. Clean and well-maintained restrooms, even if basic, are essential for a comfortable camping experience. The positive feedback on the cleanliness of the facilities at Tanners Flat Campground is reassuring for potential visitors searching for "camping near me" where hygiene is a concern.
One reviewer mentioned a minor downside: "the occasional noisy truck and motorcycle from the road." This suggests that while the campsites are secluded, the campground's proximity to Little Cottonwood Canyon Road might result in some traffic noise at times. However, this was not described as a "deal breaker" by the reviewer, implying that it was not overly disruptive to the overall enjoyment of the campground.
A crucial piece of advice from the camp host, mentioned in one review, is that the campground "gets really full in the summer time so be sure to reserve." This highlights the popularity of Tanners Flat Campground, likely due to its attractive location, amenities, and positive reputation. For local users planning to camp during the summer months or peak seasons, making reservations well in advance is highly recommended to secure a campsite.
One reviewer who only stayed for one night expressed a strong desire to return, calling Tanners Flat Campground "a true gem." Their children enjoyed playing in the creek (described as a "raging river" during their visit), and they appreciated the "peaceful ambiance" of the campground. This enthusiastic endorsement further underscores the positive qualities of Tanners Flat Campground for those seeking a relaxing and enjoyable "camping near me" experience.
In conclusion, Tanners Flat Campground in Sandy, UT, offers a modern and well-maintained camping experience in the beautiful setting of Little Cottonwood Canyon. Its easy access, riverfront campsites, secluded and well-spaced layout, clean facilities, and friendly hosts make it a highly recommended option for those searching for "camping near me." The no-pet policy is a significant plus for some campers. While occasional road noise might be present, the overall ambiance is described as peaceful. Due to its popularity, especially during the summer, reservations are strongly advised. For local users looking for a convenient yet immersive camping experience with good amenities and a welcoming atmosphere, Tanners Flat Campground appears to be an excellent choice.

Jun 20, 2022 · Mervin StoltzfusEXCELLENT!! Camp host is so nice! Bathrooms are old, but spotless! Even the vault toilets were clean and didn't smell weird. We only stayed one night and cannot wait to return! Kids loved throwing pebbles into the creek (more like a raging river this time of year!) and I loved the peaceful ambiance. Don't hesitate on this one...a true gem.
Jun 08, 2022 · Elisha MurawskiWe thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at Group site C. It was the perfect size for our family of 13 with 4 little ones. The flushing bathrooms were kept clean, the campfire, benches, and grills were a big blessing. Having the volleyball area was a definite plus, it was a great place for the little kids to play. We felt secluded enough to be comfortable. We'd definitely stay again!
Aug 01, 2020 · Jennifer KayeWe brought up a small youth group for girls’ camp this week. We found the site last-minute and were concerned that it might not be what we expected and hoped for. Well, we were right. Tanner’s Flat FAR EXCEEDED our expectations! Marian and Jana are top-notch hosts. Our group site was spotlessly clean, beautiful, shady and perfect for our needs. We had some timing issues and Marian was absolutely gracious in helping us work things out to get our site ready when we needed it. The hosts checked in with us every day of our stay and were often seen working in the campground with their family. This campground is absolute Heaven! There is a small stream running through the middle and it was absolutely delightful to fall asleep to every night. The bathrooms were more than adequate and always clean. Plenty of fresh running water and firewood for your stay. There were three groups in the upper loop sites at the same time and the way they are set up, we hardly heard a peep from either side of us. This was a perfect getaway from the summer heat and the surroundings were a huge part of our successful camp experience. There are hikes everywhere within just a few minutes of Tanner’s Flat- check them out. We will be back soon with our family! Thank you again, Marian and Jana!
