Union Bay Campground

Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA

4.0
The campground itself is nice, and has some great spots with a view of Lake Superior if you’re lucky or book out soon enough during the peak season (they fill up really fast). If you come during the summer, be prepared for an onslaught of black flies that will only be blown away if it’s windy. The only complaint I have is that the bathrooms were FULL of dead flies immediately after our 3pm check-in. They have a sign that says bathrooms will be closed for cleaning between 1 and 3 PM, but there was way more than a couple hours’ worth of dead flies in there. Not the end of the world, but it wouldn’t hurt for staff to try and wipe things down more frequently during bug season, at least where people have to wash their hands over bug corpses. It can get windy close to the lake and the lake is also quite loud, so if you’re a tent camper or light sleeper, make sure you’re staked down securely or pick a spot back from the water. - Elizabeth

Union Bay Campground Introduce

Looking for "camping near me" with the allure of Lake Superior? Consider Union Bay Campground, located in Ontonagon, MI 49953, USA. This campground offers the potential for beautiful lakeside views and access to the natural wonders of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. However, based on recent customer reviews, it's essential for local users to be aware of certain environmental factors and campground characteristics to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

One of the primary draws of Union Bay Campground is its location, offering "some great spots with a view of Lake Superior." For those fortunate enough to secure these premium sites, particularly by booking early during the peak season due to high demand, the reward is likely stunning vistas of one of North America's largest and most majestic freshwater lakes. The opportunity to camp right by the shore of Lake Superior can be a truly memorable experience, offering breathtaking sunrises and sunsets as highlighted by one reviewer who recommended choosing "one of the sites right on Lake Superior for the best access to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets."

However, prospective campers during the summer months should be prepared for a significant environmental factor: "an onslaught of black flies." According to a visitor, these insects can be quite prevalent during the summer and are only effectively deterred by windy conditions. This is a crucial piece of information for planning your trip; packing insect repellent is highly recommended, and understanding that calm, summer days might bring a higher concentration of these pests will help manage expectations.

Cleanliness of facilities is another aspect to consider. One reviewer expressed a concern about the condition of the bathrooms immediately after the designated cleaning time. They reported the bathrooms being "FULL of dead flies" despite a sign indicating closure for cleaning between 1 and 3 PM. While acknowledging it wasn't a "deal-breaker," the reviewer suggested that more frequent cleaning, especially during bug season, would be beneficial, particularly in areas where handwashing occurs. This feedback indicates a potential area for improvement in the campground's maintenance practices.

The proximity to Lake Superior also brings with it certain environmental conditions that tent campers and light sleepers should be aware of. Reviewers noted that "it can get windy close to the lake and the lake is also quite loud." Therefore, if you plan on tent camping near the water, ensuring your tent is "staked down securely" is crucial for safety and comfort. Alternatively, for a quieter and less windy experience, campers might consider choosing "a spot back from the water."

Regarding the campsites themselves, one reviewer found them to be "okay but too close together with too few trees." This suggests that while the basic camping needs might be met, the level of privacy and shade at some sites might be less than desired for those seeking a more secluded and natural feel. This is important for local users to consider based on their camping preferences. If privacy and shade are high priorities, it might be worth inquiring specifically about site characteristics when making a reservation or arriving at the campground.

On a positive note, beyond the campground itself, the area surrounding Union Bay Campground offers opportunities for outdoor recreation. One reviewer mentioned that "There is also great hiking in the area near the campground." This suggests that campers can enjoy exploring the natural beauty of the Ontonagon region through nearby trails, adding another dimension to their camping experience beyond the lakeside setting.

Based on the available information, Union Bay Campground offers the following potential environment, services, and features:

  • Lakeside Location: Situated in Ontonagon, Michigan, the campground offers access to Lake Superior.
  • Scenic Views: Some campsites boast "great spots with a view of Lake Superior," particularly if booked early.
  • Hiking Opportunities: "Great hiking" is available in the area surrounding the campground.
  • Potential for Sunrises and Sunsets: Campsites right on Lake Superior offer the best access to these beautiful natural displays.
  • Basic Campsites: The campsites are described as "okay" but potentially close together with limited tree cover.
  • Restroom Facilities: Bathrooms are available but may experience issues with dead flies, particularly during bug season.

It's important to note the following potential drawbacks or considerations based on the reviews:

  • Black Flies: Expect a significant presence of black flies during the summer months, especially on calm days.
  • Wind and Noise: Campsites close to the lake can be windy and noisy due to wave action.
  • Campsite Spacing and Shade: Some campers may find the campsites too close together with insufficient trees.

The provided information does not include any phone number or website for Union Bay Campground, making it difficult to obtain specific details about services such as water hookups, electric availability, shower facilities, reservation procedures, or potential promotional offers. Local users interested in camping at Union Bay Campground would need to conduct an online search using the campground name and location to find contact information or booking platforms. When contacting the campground, it would be beneficial to inquire about:

  • Availability of lakeside campsites.
  • Specific amenities offered at each campsite type.
