The Porkies Union Bay Introduce
Looking for an immersive "camping near me" experience nestled within a vast wilderness area with breathtaking lake views and abundant natural attractions? The Porkies Union Bay, located within the renowned Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park at M-107, Ontonagon, MI 49953, offers just that. You can reach them at (906) 885-5209 or their mobile number +1 906-885-5209 for inquiries and reservations. This location provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature, explore stunning landscapes, and enjoy the shores of Lake Superior.
The Porkies Union Bay is situated within Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, often affectionately known as "The Porkies." This massive state park is an "awesome state park and natural area" encompassing a large coastal forest area along the shores of Lake Superior. The environment is characterized by rugged terrain, old-growth forests, numerous waterfalls cascading through rocky gorges, inland lakes, and miles of hiking trails offering varying levels of difficulty. Wildlife viewing is a significant draw, with opportunities to spot black bears, deer, beavers, and a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. The park also boasts a beautiful beach along the Lake Superior shoreline, providing a contrasting landscape to the inland forests and hills.
One unique accommodation option at The Porkies Union Bay is the availability of yurts. According to a visitor who "thoroughly enjoyed staying in the East yurt," these offer a different camping experience compared to traditional tent camping. It's important to note that the yurts, at least the East yurt mentioned, do not have power or running water. However, this particular yurt was conveniently located close to the "modern campground bathrooms and water source," indicating that essential facilities are accessible nearby. Staying in a yurt provides a more sheltered and potentially comfortable experience while still being immersed in the natural surroundings.
A significant highlight of The Porkies Union Bay's location is its proximity to Lake Superior. The East yurt, for example, offered a "great view" of the lake, with the remarkable opportunity to see both the sunrise and sunset over the water. This suggests that some campsites and accommodations at Union Bay are situated right along the lakefront, providing stunning panoramic views and easy access to the shoreline. The presence of Lake Superior as a backdrop enhances the camping experience, offering opportunities for beachcombing, enjoying the vast expanse of the lake, and taking in the dramatic weather patterns that can occur over the Great Lake.
Beyond the immediate campground area, the broader Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is a treasure trove of natural beauty. The review mentions "too many waterfalls and other natural beauty to see in one week," emphasizing the sheer abundance of attractions within the park. This suggests that The Porkies Union Bay serves as an excellent basecamp for exploring the park's extensive network of hiking trails, which lead to numerous scenic waterfalls, overlook points with panoramic vistas, and pristine inland lakes. The diverse terrain and ecosystems within the park offer a wide range of outdoor activities for all interests and fitness levels.
While the reviews provide insights into the yurt experience and the overall natural environment, specific details about traditional tent and RV campsites at The Porkies Union Bay are not mentioned. Information regarding the availability of electric hookups, water hookups, or sewer hookups for RVs is absent. Similarly, details about the size and layout of individual campsites, the presence of picnic tables or fire rings at each site, or the level of privacy between sites are not provided in the reviews.
The mention of "modern campground bathrooms" near the East yurt suggests that there are well-maintained restroom facilities available for campers. However, the availability of shower facilities and whether they are free or require a fee is not mentioned. It's reasonable to expect that a state park campground would offer such amenities, but it's advisable to confirm these details when making a reservation.
There is no information provided in the reviews regarding any specific promotional offers or unique features of The Porkies Union Bay campground itself, beyond its location within the state park and the availability of yurts. To learn about campsite fees, reservation procedures, specific rules and regulations for the campground, and any potential seasonal promotions, it is recommended to contact the park directly using the provided phone numbers or to visit the official Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park website.
In conclusion, The Porkies Union Bay offers a remarkable "camping near me" experience for those seeking immersion in a large wilderness area with stunning Lake Superior views and access to a plethora of natural attractions. The availability of unique yurt accommodations, coupled with the proximity to modern facilities, provides a comfortable base for exploration. The surrounding Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park promises endless opportunities for hiking, waterfall chasing, wildlife viewing, and enjoying the coastal beauty of Lake Superior. For local users looking for an adventurous and scenic camping getaway, The Porkies Union Bay is a prime destination to consider. Further research into specific campsite amenities and reservation details is recommended to plan your trip effectively.

The Porkies Union Bay Reviews
Thoroughly enjoyed staying in the East yurt. No power or running water at the yurt but was close to the modern campground bathrooms and water source. Lake Superior is just over the bank offering a great view. Saw the sun rise AND set over the water! Too many waterfalls and other natural beauty to see in one week.
Jul 14, 2024 · Art BeckAn awesome state park and natural area, lots of hikes wild life to view in a large coastal forest area plus beach!
Aug 19, 2022 · lindley cobbReally nice campground! Only annoyance the whole time was the flies but that’s to be expected outdoors. Campsite was well maintained and in a very gorgeous setting with a walkable path to rocky lake superior shoreline and a 1-5min drive to any of the bayside sandy beaches. Bathrooms were to be expected but well maintained. The camp host was adorable and had lots of fun activities and great information about the area!
