Elk Summit Campground Introduce
For local users exploring "camping near me" options, Elk Summit Campground, located at Elm Summit Creek, Kooskia, ID 83539, USA, presents a remote lakeside setting. While the allure of a secluded natural environment can be strong, recent feedback from a visitor provides crucial insights into potential challenges associated with this campground. You can contact them at (208) 942-3113 or +1 208-942-3113 for further inquiries. This introduction aims to objectively present the environment, potential services (based on the context), features (as described), and any implicit information that might be relevant for prospective campers.
The environment of Elk Summit Campground is characterized by its remote location and proximity to a lake. The reviewer noted the lake itself as "very pretty," suggesting a scenic water body that could be a focal point for activities and enjoyment. The remoteness of the campground is underscored by the significant travel required to reach it – a 24-mile drive off the main road, which is entirely unpaved. This isolation could appeal to those seeking a secluded camping experience away from more developed areas. However, the reviewer also speculated about potential changes in biodiversity, possibly due to nearby forest fires, observing a lack of birds in the area. This raises a point about the potential impact of environmental factors on the overall experience.
In terms of services, the provided review does not explicitly mention any specific amenities at Elk Summit Campground. The absence of such mentions might imply that services are minimal, typical of a more rustic and remote camping area. Campers considering this location should likely be prepared for a more self-sufficient experience, potentially without facilities like maintained restrooms, potable water sources, or designated waste disposal areas. It is advisable to contact the Forest Service or the provided phone number to inquire about the availability of any services before planning a trip.
The features of Elk Summit Campground, as described by the recent visitor, highlight both its potential appeal and significant drawbacks. The "very pretty" lake is undoubtedly a key feature, offering opportunities for scenic views and possibly water-based activities (though these are not detailed). The remoteness of the location is another defining feature, promising a secluded getaway. However, a major feature, and a significant deterrent for the reviewer, was the overwhelming presence of black flies and mosquitoes. This issue was encountered in late July during the early afternoon and persisted without relief, even with the use of insect repellent (tea tree oil). The severity of the insect problem was described as unprecedented compared to other locations visited during the same trip. This suggests that during certain times of the year, particularly in warmer months, insects could pose a substantial challenge to campers' comfort.
Another critical feature highlighted in the review is the challenging access to the campground. The 24-mile unpaved road leading to Elk Summit was described as taking over 1.5 hours to traverse one way (a 3-hour round trip). The first half of the unpaved section was noted as "slower moving but ok," while the second half was characterized by being "rocky with tons of potholes." This difficult road condition could be a significant factor for potential visitors, especially those with vehicles not suited for rough terrain or those sensitive to long travel times on unpaved roads. It also implies that accessing supplies or leaving the campground for any reason would involve a considerable time commitment and potential wear and tear on vehicles.
Regarding promotional information, the provided review does not contain any explicit positive endorsements or features that could be considered promotional. In fact, the reviewer's experience was overwhelmingly negative due to the severe insect problem, which led them to abandon their intended stay and seek an alternative campsite elsewhere in the park. The beauty of the lake is mentioned, but this positive aspect is overshadowed by the significant discomfort caused by the insects and the challenging access road.
Given the detailed and negative experience shared by the recent visitor, it is difficult to present Elk Summit Campground as a highly recommended "camping near me" option without significant caveats. The severe insect infestation reported in late July is a major concern for anyone planning to camp during the warmer months. The long and difficult unpaved road access also poses a considerable barrier, potentially deterring visitors with certain types of vehicles or those unwilling to undertake such a lengthy and rough drive. While the lake is described as pretty and the location is remote, these potential benefits are significantly diminished by the reported drawbacks.
For local users considering Elk Summit Campground, it is strongly recommended to seek additional and more recent information from official sources or other campers who may have visited at different times of the year. Inquiring about current insect conditions and road conditions is crucial. The reviewer's experience suggests that the campground might be best avoided during peak insect season or by those not prepared for challenging access and potential lack of services. While the remoteness and lakeside setting might appeal to some, the practical realities described in the review present significant hurdles that prospective campers should carefully consider before making a decision about "camping near me" at Elk Summit Campground.

Elk Summit Campground Reviews
Possibly due to forest fires by this campsite changing biodiversity (no birds, etc) but as soon as I got out of my car in late July I was swarmed by black flies and mosquitos in the early afternoon and they never let up. it was to a degree I hadn’t experienced anywhere else on this trip to Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The 24 mile drive there off the main road is all unpaved. The first 1/2 is slower moving but ok. The 2nd half is rocky with tons of potholes. The 48 mile roundtrip drive took me over 3 hours. The lake is very pretty and it’s remote but even covering myself with tea tree oil didn’t help and I put up and then took down my tent and went to another campsite in the park down by the river not affected by fires and there was no major bug problem there.
