Colgate Camp Introduce
For local residents in search of "camping near me" around Kooskia, Idaho, Colgate Camp, located in Kooskia, ID 83539, USA, presents a unique opportunity as a free Forest Service campground. This no-cost option allows local outdoor enthusiasts to experience the natural beauty of the area without incurring camping fees, making it an attractive choice for budget-conscious adventurers.
The environment of Colgate Camp is frequently described as beautiful. Its location directly next to a river provides a scenic backdrop and the soothing sounds of flowing water, which, according to one reviewer, effectively mask any potential noise from a nearby road. This proximity to the river enhances the natural ambiance of the campground, offering a tranquil setting for relaxation and enjoyment of the outdoors. The sound of the river can contribute to a peaceful night's sleep and a generally serene camping experience.
A significant feature of Colgate Camp, highly appealing to local users, is its reported close proximity to an "amazing natural hot spring." While the specific details and accessibility of this hot spring are not provided in the reviews, its presence nearby adds a unique draw to this campground. The opportunity to enjoy a natural hot spring experience in conjunction with a free camping stay could be a major attraction for those seeking both relaxation and outdoor adventure in the Kooskia area. Local knowledge or further research might be beneficial to ascertain the exact location and accessibility of this hot spring.
In terms of services and amenities, Colgate Camp is described as a "no frills" campground, consistent with its status as a free Forest Service site. The reviews indicate the presence of basic facilities, including a garbage can for waste disposal and a pit toilet for sanitation. It's important for local users to note that more developed amenities such as potable water hookups, electricity, or flush toilets are likely not available at this campground. Campers should plan accordingly and bring their own water and any other necessary supplies for a self-sufficient camping experience.
The layout and capacity of Colgate Camp are also important considerations for local campers. According to one review, the campground has approximately six spaces available. This relatively small size suggests that the campground could fill up quickly, especially during peak camping seasons or weekends. Early arrival might be advisable to secure a spot. Furthermore, the suitability of the campsites for larger recreational vehicles (RVs) appears to be limited. The reviewer noted that there might only be adequate space for a larger RV in the first campsite, implying that the other spaces are more geared towards tents or smaller vehicles. Local users with larger RVs should assess the first spot upon arrival to determine if it meets their needs.
The campground's location "right between the road and river" is a notable aspect of its environment. While one reviewer mentioned that the road was very quiet after dark and did not pose a problem in terms of noise, local users sensitive to traffic sounds might want to consider this proximity when choosing a campsite within Colgate Camp. The trade-off for the riverside beauty is the adjacent road, although the river's sound seems to mitigate any significant noise disruption, particularly during the night.
As Colgate Camp is a free Forest Service campground, specific promotional offers or discounts are unlikely to be applicable. The primary benefit is the absence of camping fees, making it an inherently budget-friendly option for local campers. Users should be aware of and adhere to any regulations or guidelines set forth by the Forest Service for free camping areas, such as limitations on stay duration, fire restrictions, andLeave No Trace principles. Respecting these guidelines helps ensure the continued availability and preservation of such free camping opportunities for the local community.
The "camping near me" platform often includes a range of campgrounds with varying amenities and price points. Colgate Camp stands out in this category by offering a free option in a beautiful riverside setting with the added bonus of being close to a natural hot spring. While it lacks extensive facilities, its natural appeal and cost-effectiveness make it a potentially ideal choice for local campers who prioritize these aspects and are prepared for a more rustic camping experience. It caters to those who appreciate the simplicity of nature and the opportunity for a relaxing getaway without the financial burden of camping fees.
In conclusion, Colgate Camp near Kooskia, Idaho, offers local users a unique free camping experience in a beautiful environment situated between a river and a quiet road, with the added attraction of a nearby natural hot spring. While the amenities are basic, including a garbage can and a pit toilet, the scenic location and cost-free aspect make it a compelling option for budget-conscious campers. The limited number of spaces and potential challenges for larger RVs are factors to consider. For local adventurers seeking a no-cost "camping near me" option with natural beauty and the allure of a nearby hot spring, Colgate Camp is definitely worth considering.

Colgate Camp Reviews
It was very beautiful. Next to a road but yiu can't hear it over the river. And super close to an amazing natural hotspring.
Aug 13, 2022 · Cynthia PophamOnly free forest service campground. The others were all $14 a night. It had a garbage can and pit toilet. Right between the road and river. Road was very quiet after dark so wasn't a problem. About 6 spaces, not really room for larger RV except maybe the first spot.
Sep 06, 2018 · Amanda HamellNo frills campground on the Lochsa. No pads. Some streamside sites. Vault toilet one of the very few in Idaho I would call not well maintained. Free is a very good price. Photo is of the river about a mile upstream.August 2022 update: Good spot along the Lochsa. Midweek you are probably going to easily find a site. A little close to Hwy 12 but otherwise a quiet spot with just the right amount of river sounds. Vault toilet was much improved form my last visit.
Aug 14, 2022 · Scooter McHooterWe called a Ranger station asking for a good spot to boondock, she recommended Colgate campground. It's FREE. and so beautiful. Right by the road, but the only time you notice is when the odd truck uses his engine break. We stayed only one night as it started snowing and we aren't set up for that. We camped here Oct. 20th. We drive a 35ft 5th wheel.
Nov 01, 2022 · Ben & Janet De BoerBeautiful spots on the river. Boondocking at its finest. Approximately 6 spots.
