This well-regarded campground provides a diverse environment, reliable services, appealing features, and a welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for various types of campers looking for a local getaway.
The environment of First Landing State Park Campground is a significant highlight, offering a unique blend of coastal and natural landscapes. Situated on the bay, rather than the open ocean, the campground provides access to a calmer and potentially safer beach environment, characterized by the absence of "big swells." This makes it particularly appealing for families with young children or those who prefer gentler waters for swimming and relaxation. The presence of a beach within a short walk from the campsites is a major draw, allowing campers to easily enjoy the sand, sunrises, and sunsets over the bay. The park itself is described as "peaceful," suggesting a tranquil setting where visitors can truly unwind and connect with nature. The natural beauty extends beyond the beach, likely encompassing diverse ecosystems typical of a Virginia state park, such as woodlands, trails, and potentially waterways for exploration.
In terms of services, First Landing State Park Campground appears well-equipped to cater to the needs of its visitors. For RV campers, like the one who stayed in Kendall Loop with a 25-foot Class C RV, the campsites are "clean, spacious, and had reliable water and electric hookups." This is a crucial amenity for those traveling with recreational vehicles, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay. Additionally, each campsite is equipped with a "fire ring and picnic table," enhancing the outdoor living experience and making it easy to enjoy relaxing evenings with campfires and outdoor meals. Tent campers can also benefit from the spacious and clean sites, providing a comfortable base for their adventures.
The facilities at First Landing State Park Campground are also noteworthy. The "restrooms and showers were clean and had hot water," which is a highly valued amenity, especially during cooler months, as mentioned by a November visitor. Clean and well-maintained facilities contribute significantly to a positive camping experience. Furthermore, the campground is described as "handicap accessible," with "boardwalks out to the beach with ramps." This commitment to accessibility ensures that individuals with mobility challenges can also enjoy the beauty of the bay and the convenience of reaching the beach. The presence of a helpful front desk and park rangers further enhances the services, with staff described as "friendly and helpful," ready to assist with any inquiries or needs.
The features of First Landing State Park Campground extend beyond the basic amenities. The easy access to the "quiet and uncrowded" beach is a major feature, providing a serene environment for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the sunrise and sunset. The boardwalks with ramps not only ensure accessibility but also likely provide scenic pathways through the park. The overall peaceful atmosphere of the park contributes to its appeal as a "quiet getaway." The location on the bay, as opposed to the ocean, offers a unique coastal experience with calmer waters. The park likely also features trails for hiking and biking, although this is not explicitly detailed in the provided reviews but is a common feature of Virginia State Parks.
Promotional information is woven throughout the positive reviews. The emphasis on the "lovely two-night stay," the "clean and spacious" campsites with hookups, the easy beach access, the clean restrooms with hot water, the peaceful environment, and the friendly staff all serve as strong endorsements. The highlight of catching a "gorgeous sunset and a peaceful sunrise" on the "quiet and uncrowded" beach paints a compelling picture of the experience. The specific mention of handicap accessibility and boardwalks with ramps promotes inclusivity. The description as a "Great Campground on the BAY" differentiates it from oceanfront camping and highlights a unique appeal. The overall message is that First Landing State Park Campground offers a "relaxing and enjoyable camping trip" and is a "great choice" for those seeking a quiet getaway with a beautiful beach.

Dec 02, 2024 · Erda Roslan KhairiGreat Campground on the BAY, not the ocean, so no big swells or anything. Handicap accessible and boardwalks out the beach with ramps. Clean bathrooms and showers. Very helpful front desk and Rangers. Had a great stay!
Mar 25, 2025 · JASON BROCKINTONWe had a great weekend tent camping with our little dog. We had a tent only site that gave us enough privacy and quiet from larger trailers.Be prepared that every morning around 8am, the national anthem is played on the nearby military base :-)The walk from the campsites to the beach is great and so accessible! At night you see a lot of little crabs!
Oct 05, 2024 · Kerstin MüllerStayed at site 154 (water & electric), just enough room for a rig that’s about 35’ and below & you will have to disconnect your towing vehicle, but there was plenty of room to park within the site. Power and water pressure were stable. The site was a little unleveled (rear down). Access to the beach and a bathhouse were both close. Bathhouse was clean with plenty of hot water too. Didn’t like that the fire pit and picnic table were separated verses right next to the where you set up, but not too bad. Neighbors were very quiet and the miles of beach was open to the whole whooping 8 other people that were there, but this time of year and being a non weekend, is always best if you want peace and seek that slower tempo. Didn’t hike the trails this time, but they are long enough to get a good hike in if you want. And lastly Verizon was about half strength, so still could stream short videos, make video, and normal calls with no issues.
