Maple Grove Campground Introduce
Are you searching for the perfect camping escape near you? Look no further than Maple Grove Campground, nestled along the picturesque Oneida Narrows Reservoir in Thatcher, Idaho. This hidden gem offers a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with nature and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities. Located at Oneida Narrows Rd, Thatcher, ID 83283, USA, Maple Grove Campground provides a serene and spacious camping experience that is increasingly hard to find.
As a featured option in the 'camping near me' category, Maple Grove Campground stands out for its unique blend of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and affordability. While it requires a bit of an off-the-beaten-path journey, the reward is a tranquil setting that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The campground boasts approximately 12 well-spaced campsites, ensuring a sense of privacy and room to spread out. Unlike many modern campgrounds, the sites here are notably generous in size, comfortably accommodating larger tents or even campers. Each site is thoughtfully equipped with essential amenities, including a fire ring for cozy evenings under the stars, a grill for delicious outdoor cooking, and a picnic table for enjoying meals amidst nature's beauty.
One of the most appealing features of Maple Grove Campground is its direct access to the stunning Oneida Narrows Reservoir. The campsites are conveniently situated just across a small, lightly trafficked road from the lake, making it incredibly easy to enjoy water-based activities. Whether you're an avid kayaker or canoer, or simply enjoy the tranquility of being near the water, this location is ideal. The calm waters of the reservoir are perfect for leisurely paddles, allowing you to explore the scenic shoreline and immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings. As one visitor enthusiastically shared, bringing a kayak and a canoe here makes for a truly great time.
Beyond the serene lake, adventure awaits those seeking a bit more excitement. Just a short distance from the campground, you'll find a designated boat and tube take-out spot, with a put-in location situated a bit further upstream. This setup makes tubing on the Oneida Narrows a delightful experience. The gentle current offers a relaxing ride with just enough mild rapids to add a touch of thrill. For those who don't have their own equipment, Family Fun Tubing, located on Highway 36 towards Preston, offers tube rentals and a convenient shuttle service. They will transport you from their location to the put-in point and pick you up approximately 90 minutes later at the take-out, ensuring a hassle-free and enjoyable tubing adventure.
While Maple Grove Campground offers a wealth of natural attractions and recreational activities, it's important to be aware of a few logistical considerations. The campground is located about 7 miles down a dirt road, which contributes to its secluded charm but also means that cell phone service is generally unavailable in the area. Additionally, the campground currently operates on a first-come, first-served basis, as reservations are not accepted. It's also crucial to note that there is no potable water available on-site, so campers must bring their own supply. The nearest store and gas station are located in Preston, which is approximately a 30-minute drive from the campground. Planning ahead for these factors will ensure a smooth and enjoyable camping experience.
Despite these considerations, the incredible value of Maple Grove Campground is undeniable. Currently priced at an astonishingly low $5 per car per night, it offers an incredibly affordable way to enjoy a fantastic outdoor getaway. However, it's worth noting that there was a notice posted indicating a potential review of pricing, with consideration being given to market adjustments and a shift to per-site fees instead of per-car. The possibility of implementing a reservation system is also being explored. Therefore, it is highly recommended to check with the Pocatello office of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for the most up-to-date information regarding pricing and reservation policies before planning your visit.
While one visitor mentioned a concern about the water quality in some of the natural pools, noting that they are cleaned on Wednesdays but may not always be thoroughly scrubbed or drained, the overall sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive. Many describe Maple Grove Campground as a favorite place to relax, praising its location, the variety of activities available, and the generally peaceful ambiance. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the spacious campsites and lake access, creates an ideal setting for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike.
In summary, if you're searching within the 'camping near me' category for an affordable, spacious, and recreation-rich campground, Maple Grove Campground in Thatcher, Idaho, is a compelling option. With its lakeside campsites, opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and tubing, and its serene natural environment, it offers a fantastic escape. While the dirt road access, lack of cell service and on-site potable water, and current no-reservation policy are important factors to consider, the incredible value and the overall positive experiences reported by visitors make Maple Grove Campground a destination worth exploring. Remember to check with the BLM office for the latest updates on pricing and reservation possibilities before you pack your gear and head out for your next camping adventure.

Maple Grove Campground Reviews
We love this campground! The sign says Maple Grove Campground. The approximately 12 sites (I didn't count) are much more spacious from most that you find these days. Each has a fire ring, a grill, a picnic table, and space for a good size tent or a camper. There are two vault toilets for the campground. The sites are strung along the lake, so for each site, the lake is right across the little road that is only used to reach the campsites. There are multiple turn in spots from the main dirt road, so the one between you and the lake is unlikely to see traffic. We bring a kayak and a canoe and have a great time! We went in June last year and there were no bugs. This year we went in August and saw a lot of hornets/wasps, but as a trade off, the fish were jumping. As you drive up to the campsite, you pass a boat/ tube take out spot and higher up a put in spot. This year we went tubing, and it was delightful. A calm ride with just enough rapids to keep it interesting. My sister brought her own tubes, but I rented some from Family Fun Tubing. They are located out on 36 not too far from Oneida Narrows Road toward Preston. They also offer a shuttle from their location to the put in and pick you up from the take out location about 90 minutes later to take you back. It was very convenient. The down side for this campground is that it is located about 7 miles down a dirt road with no cell service and they currently don't do reservations. There is also no potable water available, so you need to bring your own. The closest store/ gas station is in Preston which is roughly 30 minutes away. Right now the campground cost is$5 per car per night, which is amazing. They did have a notice posted that they are reviewing potentially market adjusting the price and making it per site instead of per car. They are also considering reservations, so you may want to check with the Pocatello office of the Bureau of Land Management before you go.
Aug 13, 2021 · Cynthia MillsOne of my favorite places to relax. My only concern is the water in some of the pools are murky and mossy. Pools are cleaned in Wednesday, but I'm not sure they're always getting scrubbed and/or drained Besides that, there is so much to love about this place, location, activities, reservations that limit the number of people, ambiance is ideal, just love it!
Sep 15, 2024 · Karyn WebsterWe only made it as far as the boat put-in but took time to hike up to a cave. The three that ventured all the way to the top said it was awesome. The one that stopped halfway needs to get in better shape!
Aug 07, 2021 · Kimberly McJunkinNice campground next to the reservoir. A few things to be aware of: public restrooms are available, no trailer power or water hookups, no tent pads but sites have space to pitch at least one tent if not more, sites do have dedicated tables and fire pits, and most sites well shaded by trees.
Apr 05, 2021 · A.J. HaslamClean campground and bathrooms. It was a great place to relax and have fun. This place has a swimming dock and a boating dock. River is right next to the camp grounds.
